I have yet to decide if I can make it. Pros: I like you people. There will be no karaoke. Cons: The L train is demented (again! some day this project will end), and I have swimming tomorrow at 8. If I do come, I'll leave kinda early. If you have a problem with this, talk to the MTA.
posted by dame at 10:39 AM on January 14, 2006

i'm going to miss it too--still washing, ironing and packing for my trip. Take tons of pics.

have fun! (karaoke is wonderful--it's always hysterical!)

Since it's a three day weekend. I may just show up. I have a bottle of watermelon flavored malt liquor. Want me to bring it?
posted by jonmc at 11:12 AM on January 14, 2006

jonmc: that should go nicely with the 3D mod squad slides we will be showing. (And what the hell is a three day weekend? I'm self employed.)

dame: come at 8, leave at 9.
posted by StickyCarpet at 11:24 AM on January 14, 2006

And ambeglow ahould know what PP learned, which is if you don't show up we will provide a proxy for you, and we can't be held accountable for your self image in this regard.
posted by StickyCarpet at 11:30 AM on January 14, 2006

actually, I just opened the watermelon malt liquor. too late. Maybe I'll buy another on the way.
posted by jonmc at 11:33 AM on January 14, 2006

I am coming, natch, but I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, so I'll be leaving early.

I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today

Interesting gambit ThePinkSuperhero, but that hardly excuses you from at least making a brief appearance.
posted by StickyCarpet at 12:13 PM on January 14, 2006

Oh I'll be there, and at my finest to be sure. I'm just saying that, as opposed to other nights where my energy and patience abounds, tonight there is a limit to my greatness, and I'll certainly be leaving before it expires.

I'll stop by, and bring Hawaiian chocolate macadamia nut treats!
posted by onalark at 12:22 PM on January 14, 2006

No Loco Mocos? or Moco Locos? or whatever?
posted by jonmc at 12:27 PM on January 14, 2006

I just now noticed this post is in the "Bugs" category. Sorry. Can it be moved somehow?

See you there. Watermelon-flavoured malt liquor sounds disgusting.
posted by gaspode at 1:42 PM on January 14, 2006

I'm sorry to say that something in the universe does not want me to come to MetaFilter meetups. Something has again come up. Sorry that I won't be providing darts tonight. I really want to come!

jon -- I still have one remaining egg which must be like 2 months old at this point. to be honest I am scared to open the jar for fear of, well, death.

but no, I will not bring it tonight.

s/flyover/flavor/

and yeah, who was the git that posted this to bugs. oh right. hay, cutie! ^_^

(also I hear that the bringer of karaoke discs is unwell and may not attend. hope she feels better soon.)

I'm in manhatten already, so will try to stop by, if the train connection isn't too complicated (I haven't looked at a subway map yet). This rain is a point against, tho'... my boots are already soaked through.

Oh no! We haven't seen Lola in forever :-( At least, I haven't.

I'm drinking already, but I ain't gonna make it. Have fun!

Ok, so where are the pictures? This is the ON DEMAND age, people! They should be uploaded as they're taken.
posted by Eideteker at 7:25 PM on January 14, 2006

I tried to attend, but the super sekrit location I was sent via email doesn't exist. I walked up and down the block looking for the building number and finally gave up and went home.
posted by Karmakaze at 9:08 PM on January 14, 2006

The building wasn't numbered, and you probably didn't say the secret password at the door: 'quonsar'... There were many MeFites and others in attendance.
posted by onalark at 10:05 PM on January 14, 2006

Awww, Karmakaze, sad you didn't end up making it! It was craaaaazy.

Bum-mer. Unsurprisingly, company in town wasn't into the meetup. Next time: Fried pickled eggs. For serious.

Huh. I didn't know this was going on until just now. Oh well.

I had to work. balls.

And, to add insult to injury, I work right in Tribeca.

I just arrived home. there was music and booze and drugs and audio shoutouts and dancing women and dayglo pool and all kinds of stuff. whatta night!

me and mr. gaspode are totally looking after smackfu. yay us!

Christ. I wish I'd seen the previous thread. Wife and I are crashed out at a NYC Mefite's *right now* for playoffs and Boston's best hot wings which we brought with as a sacrificial burnt (fried) offering. We totally could have made this, and I could've used some entertainment after the Pats lost. Bah. Hope you all had fun.
posted by Ryvar at 12:45 AM on January 15, 2006

And for awhile there was a child, jonmc; don't forget the child. He danced and played darts and wrapped himself in Xmas lights and jumped from tall stools onto short couches like he was a gymnast. The child was the best part.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 5:54 AM on January 15, 2006 [1 favorite]

The Amazing Electric Boy rocked, but the best part was the guy who opened his wallet to show me a picture of himself with John Lennon the night they did an 8-ball together. And the woman who lived in New Guinea and discussed the finer points of etiquette when served human flesh.
What an excellent, eclectic crowd.
Also, I learned to actually sink a pool ball.

Well, StickyCarpet took exactly zero pictures. Good thing DaShiv's last set was pretty weak.

Running the 300 foot extension cord to bring power to the floor kept me busy. Most of the food was never served for similar reasons.

How about Zelda? She has a website.
posted by StickyCarpet at 8:52 AM on January 15, 2006

No pictures? What a bummer. This shindig sounds like something from the heyday of Studio 54 or something. Now it'll have to be left to our imaginations.

What a fun evening. My head hurts.

and of course, there was the ceremonial goblet of watermelon malt liquor.

jonmc: there was ... dancing women...

That was my neice. Isn't she cute?
posted by StickyCarpet at 10:33 AM on January 15, 2006

mdn! You didn't show up after the splinter group schismed off, did you?

The leaping electric kid was definitely my highlight this time (though it really did look/sound for a moment that he was seriously hurt after jump #3). Also, Ariel Sharon just won't die and we'll never get to go to Rome and it's all that Terri vegetable's fault.

Also, I think for future mixed-group meetups, metafilter business cards would be appropriate. I suspect some of those older folks would have contributed well to the site. . .

Just came back from the first pass cleanup, (40+ wine bottles.)

Not surprising since some Russian guy was observed opening a bottle of wine and chugging it dry.

One thing I didn't pick up on at the time, but was informed about by several people, regards Electric Boy. His dad was always nearby, and wearing a kilt.

Apparently one contingent felt there was a dangerous lapse in supervision of that child to let him wrap himself with those lights like that.

The down side of that could have been horrible.

Seems a group left in protest.

Some else said "when your dad is wearing a kilt you have to go to great lengths to get attention.

My friend Kristiana Pärn took these pictures.
posted by StickyCarpet at 3:01 PM on January 15, 2006

Yay, I'm in the background of one of those pictures (near the bottom- on the left in the picture, you can see the side of my head). There is proof that I was there, hurray.

And come on, if you can't wrap yourself in Christmas lights as a child, when can you? I would think it would bother people more to have a lone kid at a party with adults drinking and using illegal substances , but to each their own.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 3:15 PM on January 15, 2006 [1 favorite]

(For the record, I didn't get any sense that the little boy was doing anything primarily for attention's sake. It read to me like he was genuinely having fun by making fun for himself.)

As for the photos, I like that one 2/3rds of the way down in which the guy has fallen asleep. (If he's the same man as from the 3rd photo down, then he happens to be a former student of mine. Bizarre).

(On preview: and also, you know, just for the record, I bet his coming to parties like this as an 8 year old will end up serving him well.)

nobody: that sleeping guy is my new intern on his first day on the job. He carried so much stuff all day he deserved a rest. His name is Romeo, he is Portuguese.

That was a pretty surreal evening. I showed up late and walked into a pitch black room where I knew nobody. For the first hour, I wasn't even sure it was the right party. But it all worked out in the end.

Thanks again to gaspode and husband for letting me crash on their couch when I missed the last train.

I showed up late and walked into a pitch black room where I knew nobody.

Is that a setup for another nobody joke?

Some little things, like plugging in the lights, got lost in the shuffle but in terms of good people all the elements were there.

Let's try this format again in a month or two.
posted by StickyCarpet at 8:37 AM on January 16, 2006

Yeah, do it again. I want to come next time....
posted by spaghetti at 8:51 AM on January 16, 2006

It rocked, StickyCarpet, you were the host with the most!

My non-Mefite friend (Sarah) said she, " had a freakin fantabulous time," and it was "an experience {she} will not soon forget", which I ditto. Next time, I'm bringing even more of my weird crazy friends to add to the mix.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 8:52 AM on January 16, 2006 [1 favorite]

And also, when Electric Boy was maniacally spinning around on that stool I couldn't help but think I was looking at the young jonmc.

Thanks for coming jonmc, youy added a lot of life.

mdn! You didn't show up after the splinter group schismed off, did you?

there was a schism? No, I was in tribeca too early & thought perhaps I'd stop back later, but then flaked out because ... I was just flakey that eve. Tried to read Sartre instead. (outcome: unsuccessful.)
posted by mdn at 8:58 AM on January 16, 2006

there was a schism?
A small group of us (dorian, crack, dorian's non-Mefite "brother", my non-Mefite friend, nobody, and me) went off in search of food around... 10:30, maybe?

Tried to read Sartre instead.

Why struggle to achieve existential nausea when you could have had a perfectly serviceable hangover?
posted by StickyCarpet at 9:22 AM on January 16, 2006

Also, I'm fairly sure that crack thinks I'm a complete maniac, since by the time she arrived I was higher than a kite and frantically screaming something at gaspode over the music. She broke in and said "I'm crack." I said "I'm jonmc." She was like "I guessed."
posted by jonmc at 9:54 AM on January 16, 2006

I'm fairly sure she's not the only one.

Zing! Just kidding, little brother.

Since this is the one-stop-shopping before and after thread, including thank yous, I can say that onalark did indeed bring macadamia chocolate treats.

And onalark was part of The Schism! I didn't mean to forget you, lover.

It seems I arrived after the Schism, so I thought there were 4 MeFites and 30 "others". Sorry I missed ya.

Interesting theory, smackfu, but that doesn't square with my memory of our greeting and discussion. I remember you surrounded with friends.

There were 100 people there for the most part.

Remember that 1500 square feet occupied by 100 people is still 15 square foot per person.
posted by StickyCarpet at 2:22 PM on January 16, 2006

My memory barely squares with itself.

ThePinkSuperhero: A small group of us went off in search of food around 10:30...

So where did you end up? I would have steered you to the Pakastani Tea House on Church just north of Chambers for some pretty great Indian-style food under $10.

We went to this teeny-tiny falafel place down in the East Village area. I can't remember what it was called.
