Certainly the registration fee probably serves to keep most people who can't own credit cards (read: young people) out of here?

dead: Gift memberships are still an option, as is "Dad, Paypal this website five dollars for me."

I have an automatic soft spot for anybody who calls him/herself FeistyFerret. Especially if s/he has a feisty ferret (or two or three) of whom s/he takes good care.

(I'm thinking of dropping gender-specific pronouns and calling everybody "it".)

And speaking of feisty ferrets, Natasha's up and bored.

I think Fiona is probably older than baby_jessamyn at this point.

visa gift and pay-as-you-go cards are sold at almost every drugstore and grocery store in the country.

It is a little known fact that the animated sitcom character Stewie Griffin is based upon the person posting as quonsar.

Isn't it a bit of a problem legally if you have young users? A lot of message boards make you swear you're over 14.

The only prepaid visas I've seen had a $150 minimum to start, and about three pages of 'creative' charges and fees that would start to cost real money if you actually used the card on anything beyond disposable cell phone topups ...

You can also get Paypal without credit cards (with a bank account), but they will take MONTHS to 'verify' the account, and if you forget your password, good luck getting the account working without contacting the bbb.

the cheque cashing places around here are advertising a free prepaid M/C when you open an account with them (Loaded with $10 it is apparently a $40 value).

I don't care who is the youngest mefite, or how old he/she/it is.

At nearly 30, I'm the oldest young person on MeFi.
posted by Deathalicious at 4:40 PM on May 15, 2007

I'm 35. But since I am sooo smart, so unbelievably brilliant, so astoundingly and astonishingly intelligent, I experience life 10 times more than the average person.

That makes me like 300 some years old.

Or something.

I'm 17, and I paid for my own account, without a credit card.

I'm an avid eBay user, and my parents and I share a PayPal account. So I paid the $5 from the account, and just paid my parents back from my own bank account.

Not outside the realm of possibility to have people younger on here, I imagine.
posted by DMan at 8:05 PM on May 15, 2007

17, paid for my own account. But I just have a PayPal hooked up to a debit card. It takes about a week to transfer funds, but hey, it's better than nothing.

On the other hand, I always act the hypocrite and assume everyone else here is in the 20+ range. Might have something to do with the correct grammar and spelling. *shrugs*
posted by Phire at 8:18 PM on May 15, 2007

I'm 17. I seriously doubt us 17 year olds (waves at Phire, DMan) are the youngest, though. I bought my account with my Paypal account attached to my checking account.

This doesn't have much to do with anything, but as long as the topic has been brought up: I've never felt weird about being younger than average here on MeFi, but I mostly stick to Ask. The size of this community helps ease that slight awkwardness as well- I've been (by far) the youngest person on smaller message board type things and that did get strange at times. Here (and maybe this is more apparent on Ask, I don't know) it feels like people run the gamut. I get surprised when I see people older than 50 or so though, mostly because I can't imagine my parents using Metafilter. Definitely adds some interesting viewpoints though.

Incidentally, Visa gift cards are available in fifty dollar versions, if not smaller ones.

I have an American Express gift card for $25, and I assume it could be used in the same way.

I joined a year ago when I was 17, because my friend who was already a MeFite used his PayPal account to buy me an account. I believe he was about 16 when he joined.

I was 17 when I joined. 21 now. One thing I've always found about the web is that as long as you've got a decent hold on spelling and grammar, no-one will suspect your youth unless you tell them. Which is nice.

I'm guessing that there are no actual front page posting MeFites who are less than 12 years old.

I'm also guessing that there are no actual front page posting MeFites who are more than 65 years old.

Wasn't there a 13-year-old who posted a question to AskMefi once? I remember the poster being rather mature for his/her age.

There was a 14 (or so) year old who posted 2 really good, long answers to someone's question about becoming a step-dad to some similarly aged kids. The community replied by calling him a fake and ended up scaring him off. There were MeTa posts about it.

FiestyFerret and I are both 14, probably making us the youngest regulalry active members. I've been lurking and such since I was 12.

I believe I am the youngest front page poster, however.
