How many is too many? August 1, 2007 4:01 PM   Subscribe

I'm a little confused about the etiquette concerning favorites. I've had a few people tell me I favorite far too many comments, but I don't really see the harm in it. Is this something I should be worried about? Is there a compelling reason to curtail my willy-nilly favoriting?

No. They should get over themselves. Use favorites however you like.

posted by davejay at 4:11 PM on August 1, 2007 [5 favorites]

No harm, no foul. I am curious though as to why you have the amount of favorites that you do. Do you favorite so that you can find a particular comment again easily? If so, then having a lot of favorites is not such a good idea. Do you use it as sign to the commenter that you like what they said? Then favorite away!
posted by tellurian at 4:17 PM on August 1, 2007 [4 favorites]

There is no etiquette. Different folks use 'em in different ways, which is fine; some folks have strong feelings about how they should be used, what they should be called, how and if they should be displayed, etc, which is also fine, but no one should be giving anyone any shit for using the favorites, regardless.

You're a wacky outlier, but there's nothing wrong with that.

posted by ninjew at 4:48 PM on August 1, 2007 [3 favorites]

I think it's not a problem, tehloki. It's just that some people use favorites to mean "postive feedback". Some people will forget about a comment that says "great post" and will instead feel more comforted by a steadily increasing number. I like my little slowly rising number...you...give my number...less meaning...why! Why must you betray me!

(Seriously, it's okay.)
posted by StrikeTheViol at 4:55 PM on August 1, 2007 [3 favorites]

Some people use favorites to mean "I agree!" or "That was particularly witty." Other people use them to remind themselves to come back to certain comments because they contain useful information, or to certain threads to see how they turn out. Go ahead and use them however your little heart desires.

The reason I favorite so many comments is that I frequent boards with comment moderation (digg, sensibleerection, etc), so I'm used to moderating a rather high percentage of the comments in a given thread. Unfortunately, the only option for comment moderation on mefi is the favorite.

I'll favorite a comment when:
-Somebody expresses an idea or viewpoint that I share in an eloquent or interesting manner
-Somebody makes a comment I really enjoy
-Somebody says something really hilarious
-Somebody makes a comment that already has a lot of favorites (I like to jump on the bandwagon)

Sometimes I find myself favoriting a comment so that other people will be more likely to read it, because I find it to be insightful or noteworthy. Sometimes I think that unfavorited comments get skimmed over a lot more often :P

Because the favourites system was not only spelled incorrectly but named wrongly right from the start, you are fine - they aren't favourites, they are bookmarks. "Favorites" in this context is just an unusual spelling of "bookmarks" peculiar to a dialect spoken only by a small group of Internerds that reside in Oregon.

I disagree Kwine. I think, while it may have been introduced and sold as a 'bookmark' or a 'I wanna come back and read this later' it morphed into something that has actually been far more useful to the community.

I know opinions vary on this subject, but I became far more prolific after I realized that, on occasion, people seemed to like what I had to say, and they clicked a little + to tell me that.

MeFi was a little intimidating in the early years, and I didn't comment a whole lot. Seeing that people sometimes agreed with me by way of favoriting a comment helped to bring me out of my shell, as it were.

And, on the off chance that you are not in full agreement, what do you think of pumpkins? I'm thinking of a new exhibit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Montana like a different country or commonwealth or territory or something? couldn't we just, you know, speed like crazy, shoot whatever guns we want, and blow all sorts of shit up?

I'm thinking of a meetup that would be legendary.

Come on up. If if it's just 2 person meetup it would be fun, especially since it will involve the 2 most important MeFites.

Sadly, however, we do have an actual speed limit now. The whole convoluted speed limit issue was just a way to raise the speeding ticket from $5 (yes, FIVE) to over a hundred. And even when there was "no speed limit" people got speeding tickets.

But, there's plenty of wide open space, and Yellowstone Park is 4 hours from my door.

I've favorited you far too much, ThePinkSuperhero (especially in AskMe, where your answers, particularly in the relationshipfilter questions, mirror my own thoughts)... I have called for a personal moratorium on my favoriting of you because I don't want any malicious gossip :P...

Plus, I'm jealous of your pink profile background. I want a purple one! *makes waaaah sounds*

Who are these people and folks? You're getting, what - phone calls? Emails? Smoke signals? Random strangers stopping you guys in the street?

In my case, I metatalk'd a question about favoriting functionality, and a few of the folks in the thread said I shouldn't be using favorites like I was, that I should be using it only to maintain a short list of current favorites. It was a really odd response, to me.

WTF? They're YOUR favorites, you can use them in whatever manner YOU want to! If I want to favorite every person who uses the word "discombobulated" (not that I have, but it's an intriguing idea) I damn well can! If people are monitoring YOUR favorites (and worse, criticizing them) then they are losers of the worst degree.
posted by amyms at 12:03 AM on August 2, 2007 [1 favorite]

amyms, please note that I am right now using the word "discombobulated".

It has been noted, flapjax, and don't think it's not appreciated.

Points off for not putting your period inside your quotation marks, though.
posted by amyms at 12:17 AM on August 2, 2007 [1 favorite]

Hmm... y'know, now that you mention it, punctuation as it relates to quotation marks is always bedeviling me. Anywhere you can direct me, by chance, regarding rules of usage?

Oh, and just for good measure (and to see if you're really starting a trend here) I'd like to add:

DISCOMBOBULATED.

Anywhere you can direct me, by chance, regarding rules of usage?

"In the United States, periods and commas go inside quotation marks regardless of logic." (I realize not every Mefite is in the U.S., but flapjax is)...

Confession: I don't always put my punctuation inside the quotation marks. I just do what looks aesthetically pleasing (which probably varies from person to person).

Okay flapjax, we've taken up too much space on this thread, let's get a room (said pre-emptively, before anyone else can snark about it).
posted by amyms at 12:38 AM on August 2, 2007

Okay, I got the room. But, uh, amyms, I'm not in the U.S. I've lived in Tokyo since 1995, therefore am exempt from U.S. Punctuation Laws.

Gomen nasai, flapjax, I just noticed that.

This blatant punctuation imperialism will not stand. I declare an embargo against all commas, periods, parentheses, and dashes from Japanese manufacturers.

No sock puppet. They just favorited a really old post of mine and it came to my attention because of this mad favoriting thread.

Nice try, tehloki. Do you really think that, after all this water under the bridge, after I bared my soul to you - in public, even! - you can just make everything better by favoriting my last comment? Do you?

Forget it. I know where your favorites have been, tehloki. I know who else has received some of your special favor[ite]s, and I'm not going to fall for it ever again.

Wow. And he's been here since 2001! I wonder if he was planning to delurk, or if he just reads MeFi a lot and thought being able to use the somewhat-primitive-but-incredibly-convenient-on-the-saving-end bookmarking system was worth the $5...?

I prefer my attention-whoring maneuvers vertiginously grand. No little pips of the plus sign could ever satiate my cosmic lust for the adulation of the uninitiated.

Yet, it cannot be untrue, as I have transformed the illuminating poison called favorites within myself, strengthening Voice and Mefite Memory by seeing beyond and feeling before my membership, indulging in that transcendent dependency: the favorites must flow.
