the podcast stole my best parts & threw them in the river February 25, 2008 1:21 PM   Subscribe

Wasn't there a new podcast in the works as recently as a few weeks back? If you're still in need of questions & commentary from semi-reliable users, that I'd like to suggest acting now. I am readily contactable in this crazy future age. There will be no difficulty tracking me down, so that to you This Moment in Time is as close as ANYONE can get to the absolute perfect combinations of words, sighs, jokes, and groans that make up the whole of a "Classic Podcast. My ASSISTANCE FOR OTHER MATTERS, whomever OF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE MINIMAL aspects AND i UNDERSTAND.

It's my fault.

First there was a blizzard and there was all this terrible packet loss on the line and I sounded like some terrible robot. Then we recorded one the next week but the call recorder on my end -- after mathowie had put out the little explanatory article about how to do it RIGHT -- went all wrong. PEBCAK & me I suspect, ;eaving me and my robot packetloss voice on mathowies machine which was sub-optimal.

So now we're getting together to record again tomorrow. You have already called in, and we're fine questionwise. It wil be fine.

What, we've gotta call in now? I very specifically gave you my address, Jessamyn, so that you could contact me by post and receive the missives of my wit within six to eight weeks! I dare say that your little en-podded broadcast will be much poorer for the lack of my scathing ripostes re: the Irish problem.

i have yet to call in.

Oh sorry, I think we mentioned you in episode 20 and I got confused.

The old blizzard-packetloss-recorder-malfunction-robot-voice excuse, huh?
posted by burnmp3s at 1:48 PM on February 25, 2008

"Oh sorry, I think we mentioned you in episode 20 and I got confused."

No, that was just Mathowie's impersonation of the McLaughlin report, punctuating his barked lists with "ITEM! Sixty percent of MeTa talk responders are against things being eaten! Jessamyn, your topic!"
posted by klangklangston at 1:50 PM on February 25, 2008 [4 favorites]

Punctuating them with that whole phrase, indeed. It made the podcast very hard to follow.

jouke did something cool -- recorded a question using their computer's internal mic, then sent it to us as a mp3 file.

Anyone is welcome to do the same, I'm still working on a new call-in-then-record-to-mp3 solution using GrandCentral.

Rather than make a callout on Metatalk, which I know would be insane, I find myself using this thread to wonder aloud why we have a million and one "Help me name my cat, website, business, etc." questions on AskMe despite guidelines to the contrary, and equally as many, "What gift should I get this person?" queries....but the "Help me figure out my PIN" was deleted before I even saw it? I thought it had a logic puzzle/sudoku appeal.

Plus I feel badly for anyone traveling who forgets his PIN. I'm a language person, and hate remembering number sequences with no meaning or pattern to them, too.

"Help me figure out my PIN"

The question was the functional equivalent of "what four letter words can you make with the letters O and P and T and S, I think the first letter was S." There's no reason to have it be in AskMe. As the question was stated, there's no other information someone from AskMe could have that would help the OP with his question. If he wanted strategy about dealing with a missing PIN, that's one thing, but "Help me remember the order of some random numbers I made up and may not remember correctly" is really pushing the "too specific" button repeatedly.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 8:23 PM on February 25, 2008

I'm sure he has typed in his PIN enough times that there is lingering muscle memory in his fingers. He just needs to hover his fingers over the key layout until he senses what "feels right."

I was going to post the above but the question is gone now. It wasn't a pencil and paper puzzle at all. Also it was much better than the "Q: Explain Relativity to me A1: Here's a Wikipedia link A2: Well...from what little I've read and this is just a guess..." questions which always stay up.

He seemed to genuinely need help, and some folks go to AskMe just for the chance to help folks. There may have been non-number-puzzle helpful answers.

That said, I'm mostly here because: why do you guys keep closing MeTa threads?
