I know that there's a dedicated cadre of Team Fortressers out there. Anyone playing Call of Duty 4?

I'm just starting on multiplayer, and am already hating the n00b-h8tUrZ on the servers I've been poking around on....

PC or XBOX 360? I play the 360 version pretty regularly. When I supposed to be working. But I'm not.

You must be talking about PC's.. since your'e talking about "poking around on servers".. us Xbox 360 folks don't have the option of changing servers...

Yeah, I'd say just go with the cadre of Team Fortressers.

I have it for 360, but rarely take the time to play...

I play on PC now and then. Been busy lately, so not as much... But I usually hang around the "Doorman is God" domination server, it's a good one.

I play COD4 competitively...! (as in competitions with money prizes and two non-prize ladder comps. But I'm in New Zealand and play on Australian servers, so unlikely I'll ever get to pwn you :(

That's not the ROTATO you are looking for. *waves hand in face*

I've got it for the 360 and I love it, and I've got an internet connection, and an unused XBox live 6 month card, and a headset. I guess I could figure out some way to combine all those and see if something good comes of it.

See, I took care of looking like a fool on teh Internets a long time ago.
and now I'm free!

I have COD4 installed on my PC, but cannot get into it.
The COBBRA-licious ROTATO of TF2 has me spoilt.

I have a friend at work who played it on the 360 a lot, until he discovered about the physical mod you can attach to your controller to get semi-autofire in-game. (it skirts the cheat detectors, and is pretty easy to ID, apparently).

I've found all COD online play to be ridden with people cheating, despite the 'punkbusters' being enabled.

Hey sorry to post and then go to bed...yes, PC.

A friend tipped me to a server he's an admin on. He says they're pretty aggressive about policing and that they mod it so it's a little more realistic. I'm planning on checking it out today if I can....

I play COD4 on the PC and enjoy it.

You might consider looking for servers in 'hardcore' or 'HC' mode. In hardcore mode, most of the HUD info is gone and it takes a higher skill to compete. For example, you only see radar when you get 3 kills in a row and trigger it.

On the hardcore servers, the maturity level tends to be a bit higher.

I play on the BDS servers, the ZS servers, and occasionally on the Upgrrayyed server.

Not surprisingly, my handle is Argyle in COD4.

COD4 is fishy, TooF2 is bitey: it's all good.

But funny haha beats serious diedie every time. Every time, friends. Every time.

Plutor, every time you feel like acting like a dick

Plutor wasn't being a dick. Plutor is the guy that founded the Metafilter Steam Community. Plutor doesn't like us any more, or at least he doesn't play with us anymore, and that hurts, I'm not going to pretend it doesn't, but you shouldn't cast aspersions on the Plutor, because he's a motherfucking elder, and that means you don't. You shouldn't. People might, but those people aren't good people. They need schoolin'. So don't. Seriously.

All of my coworkers who aren't playing WOW are obsessed with killing each other in COD4 on the 360. They finally convinced me to get a copy and give it a try. I agreed, but I decided to play the single player first just so that I could learn the controls, weapons, physics, etc.

Needless to say, it's awesome, and I was completely ready to throw myself to the wolves of Live play, when GTA4 came out. Now I have to beat the single player of that...

which I've been working on for the last month.

I need more free time.

Which isn't to say that I wouldn't immediately join a MeFi COD4 game. I like you people more than my coworkers. Or at least, I have more interest in virtually killing you guys.

I play CoD4 on the PC, and I do it pretty regularly with a pretty cool bunch of guys at the Old Warriors' Society, under the moniker Kaptain Kolbey. We've got a little, casual league and everything. You should stop by and make a post in the recruiting forum if you're interested.

No, wait, you're right. Plutor was totally being a dick.

My bad for not paying very close attention. And drinking beer on a Friday night.

For posterity: Dr Baa was making a funny injoke, and Plutor was being a big doodyhead, and that wasn't nice or amusing at all.

I have a friend at work who played it on the 360 a lot, until he discovered about the physical mod you can attach to your controller to get semi-autofire in-game.

Given that most of the weapons in the game are already fully automatic I'm not sure exactly what this gains you. About the only weapon I can figure it would be at all useful on is the G3 since that's a good gun but only semi-automatic.

Now that I think about it, I have wondered how the heck some people fire their G3s so fast.

But it's seriously not a problem. Particularly on the hardcore servers where I play. I'd rather use a P90 for close battles, an M4 for medium range, and a sniper rifle for long range even if the G3 has some sort of autofire hack.

Well, I finished my 150 head shots on the M14 last night.

G3, M4, and the MP44 left until golden rifles. I think the MP44 will be hard...

Argyle:

Join a 50 person pure-deathmatch server. It's a clusterfuck, but the one spawn in 8 that you manage to survive more than ten seconds (immediately run backwards so the follow-ons spawn in front of you) will almost guarantee you 8-10 headshots with any weapon.

A few hours spent slogging through that will EASILY max out any and every achievement/stat.
posted by Ryvar at 3:09 PM on June 6, 2008

Note: this only applies to PC COD4 users, as they are the only ones with access to sweet, sweet 50-person old-school deathmatch leveling farms.

I'd just like to point out that the threads on either side of this one demonstrate the demand on MeFi for a good round of killing. TF2, CoD4, take your pick (I'm biased, naturally).

Nothing is as satisfying as watching your poo-slinging meta-adversary get fragged to hell by your hand (or mouse-click).

nothing.
well, it beats counting 'favorites', anyway...

There are two servers -- one private (for MeFites only), and I believe that address is in herrdoktor's profile here on MeFi. There's also a public server -- I believe it's called [MeFi] We Have Sentries, so just browse the server list.

And of course, MeFight Club for all your smack-talking, unlockable-hypothesizing, Wilcoxon-signed-rank-test-disussing rotato needs.

Join Mefight Club, get with the 250 people we already have! Much more than just server addresses -- we got a regular ol' offshoot community going there, with tournaments and sprays and chat servers and nudity and more rotato and brownies and guns that shoot bees than any one person could handle!

Or, if you don't want to be all friendly-like and join the board,

Name: [MeFi] Your Favorite Class Sucks
Type: Team Fortress 2
IP Address: 8.6.77.194 Port: 27015

is the passworded private server

and

Name: [MeFi] We Have Sentries
Type: Team Fortress 2
IP: 8.9.15.132:27015

is the pubbie.

We just finished an epic session on the private server scant minutes ago, and there are few diehards playing on the pubbie as I speak.

Another regular PC COD4 player here. I play most weekends connecting back to my old Clan server in the UK (150-170 ping can be murder, particularly when trying to snipe, but it's mostly playable). I do occasionally play on US servers too, but I stick to Hardcore games, avoid Free-for-alls (and Team Deathmatch, where possible) and stick to objective-based games.

Just look for fuzzy truffle. (And thanks to the Mefites that told him to keep his name in an earlier askme thread, btw! He has gained new respect as 'that guy who PWNS with a sniper rifle in an indoor round.')
