Son of MetaFilter Mini Meet Up Now With Live Vintage Blues at the Marco Polo in Georgetown November 12, 2008 9:05 PM   Subscribe

Son of MetaFilter Mini Meet Up... at the Marco Polo in Georgetown Good music, stimulating company and conversation were hallmarks of last month's affair and now the stars align again at 8 PM on Saturday, November 22nd, in the Marco Polo once more.

Once more and more the merrier: For details, click on the link above for beau coup more linkage regarding the locale and music.

Last month, the band was great, the bar food was far more than just OK, the company was stimulating and the conversation delightful. Now there is a statement with which I suspect the inimitable Tube will heartily agree.

One thing that makes meet ups so much fun is that, in a situation where the average bear tends to at the top of his or her form, Metafilter membership tends to be the above average bear, which makes for an evening of the sort of stimulating conversation which leaves one all revved and recharged for some time thereafter. Thus it was last month, and more than likely will it be once more come Saturday after next.

So, mark your calendar for 8 PM at the Marco Polo Saloon, 5613 4th Avenue South on November 22nd and then, the night of that day, come on down, ready to ramble.

Hey, I will be in town this time, so count me in.

I'm trying hard to think of any ursine characteristics I might have, and the only thing I can come up with is that I dumpster dive from time to time...

Yeah Karl, I'm down with it, it's literally just over the hill from me. No smoke, great chicken, not too loud, soda refills, rockin' tunes, good company; what's not to like!

Does this mean I have to put in effort to choose a "clever" t-shirt to wear?

I'm not in, but I'm moving to Seattle in Februaryish, so I hope the Descendants of Metafilter Mini Meetup are still going strong then!

Hurray for meetups! (FWIW, next time you do one of these can you be sure to post what major city or state you are talking about? There is more than one Georgetown, and while I know y2karl isn't located near DC, lots of other folks don't.)

Marco Polo is located in the Georgetown that is in Washington. Hope that clears things up for everyone. No?

(I believe our state motto is "Washington: Not Just a District Anymore... Just to Fuck with You!")

Also, this is the Georgetown south of Capitol Hill, in Washington.

One of our local TV stations used to refer to national news as coming from "the other Washington"...

Sorry, a friend's birthday party is that night so I can't make it.

Well, all the same, for those who show up, entertainment awaits.

As I allowed elsewhere, way back when the Marco Polo was another one of those taverns that time forgot, with a sailing ship motif to it's exterior neon sign back in the day. The new owners have gone for a sports bar with an accent on stock car driving. Stock car pictures, stock posters and a stock car indoors for decor. Yet when you look up here and there, you see a sailing ship painted on the ceiling from days gone by.

And the bar inside is curved like a horse shoe--I wonder what it looked like back before the remodel. I only wish I had gone inside before the re-decoration. But, on the other hand, they could have done worse.

The women come and go, talking of Michelangelo and they have the same Bambi Shoot em up hunting video game as the Pacific Inn. Will ironic wonders never cease ?

And, as noted elsewhere--and I have Tube to testify--the music was great. And last month, so was crowd and crew, such as they were. Last month the place was uncrowded and there was ample room for a crew or two. For a meet up locale, the place has merits indeed. So, we hope to see you there where the heat pipes just cough and there's nothing, really nothing to turn off. Hot diggety, it should be fun.

I'm still down as a "maybe." Would be nice to see y'all again. I have pregnant wife syndrome, so my social life is a thrilling touch and go ride these days.

Karl and I ran into two of his friends, one, the man, is a Metafilter lurker...

We spoke of many things; Dennis Eichhorn, false memory, Elizabeth Loftus, silver mining, Idaho, the Russian name "Galena" and the ore of the same name, second hand smoke, SUV's, the venality of American television programing as contrasted with the election of an obvious intellectual as president, the Superfund, the hospital in Wallace, Idaho where Lana Turner was born, cat ataxia, dog feces on Parisian sidewalks, and Karl's cool shirt.

Hey, sorry for missing the meetup, I was up in shoreline dog sitting, and the process to get to georgetown would have involved many complications among the pups.

Hey, it was really cool. If you don't believe me--ask Tube. He was there.

Wow, I thought I knew Dennis Eichhorn from back in our Rocket days but, no... That link held all sorts of revelations for me.

As for imagery--the prd_id=845524442178195&FOLDER<>folder_id=2534374302028485&bmUID=1227542372823">shirt. The ataxic cat and that's it for pictures this time around. And I even brought the giant head of Homer. *sniff*

The band was smokin'--and Jack's new piano player is well versed in New Orleans classics--Tipitina, the Meters' Chicken Strut and Cissy Strut and so on and so forth. 'Though no one danced while I was there this past Saturday, it wasn't for a lack of suitable music. And, for a fact, the crowd danced up a storm the month before. So, there is that to consider as well, future prospective meeters up.

And the place was packed. A substantial proportion of the entire Seattle blues mafia was in attendance--the place was about half musicians. And there was Bob Graf, dean of the local jazz and blues 78 collectors. And my friends Neal and Cynthia, to boot.

A personal first was that I had never consciously realized before that Bob Dylan got the title Knocked Out Loaded from the third line in the first verse of Junco Partner. I did not realize that before last Saturday night.

As far as set, setting, music and company, everything was great the night before last--all that was lacking was anyone from MetaFilter apart from me and Tube. Well, we'll see about that. The band will be playing at the Marco Polo on either the 20th or 27th of December. I am leaning towards giving this one last shot and posting in a couple of days whichever date it is as yet another meet up--maybe Abandoned Unwanted Teenage Foster Child of MetaFilter Mini Meet Up Now With Live Vintage Blues at the Marco Polo in Georgetown in the Other [Seattle] Washington.

Or something like that only a little more condensed in the title.

Well, mo' later....

Much, much later--as far as the Marco Polo is concerned. My understanding is that the Phantoms will not return until February 28th.

Dang.

Ah, oh, and well, then...
