Broken foot and all. January 23, 2009 9:35 AM   Subscribe

jonmc's last comment was this.

I think the dude is great and I'd hate for some in-thread spat to have sent him packing. Can anyone who has a way to get a hold of him tell him to come back - if indeed the aforementioned was the reason.

dersins, did you piss him off?

I'm pretty sure dude's just taking a break; this is not the first time. I talked to him via email that afternoon and he was chilling out.
posted by cortex (staff) at 9:38 AM on January 23, 2009

He's always chilling out. I was wondering if there's a correlation and if so, someone could tell him to get his ass back here.
posted by gman at 9:40 AM on January 23, 2009

His email is the same as it ever was, drop him a note or find him on MetaChat. To the best of my knowledge, he's on a temporary hiatus not a long-term departure. Plus, to be fair, I think pent-up housebound broken-foot drinking-and-boredom sometimes got the better of him. I'm sure we'll see him again.

He's been completely omnipresent on the site since he got injured. I suspect this is an inevitable part of the recovery process.
posted by hermitosis at 9:40 AM on January 23, 2009

Let's do the opposite of how we always treat him and see if he comes back.

Your favorite user sucks.

I think his actual flameout was at metachat. Obama burnout, apparently.

DU - I never said he was my favourite user. I like different users for different reasons.

jessamyn - I don't have his email address. Never been to MetaChat. Thanks. As well, why does a "temporary hiatus" require someone to disable their account?
posted by gman at 9:47 AM on January 23, 2009

Ok, we need to choose someone to pick up the slack and mention how every band who isn't the Ramones sucks in every single music thread.

I nominate myself.

. . . why does a "temporary hiatus" require someone to disable their account?

Maybe so someone will notice and make a metatalk post about it.

Ah, some people can't really give it a rest without forcefully cutting themselves off somehow. It's worth noting that so many of the notorious on-and-off users are in the under-20000 club. The longer you spend here, the more you become emotionally attached, and the more grudges have the opportunity to grow.

what is up with all the dramaturgy?

i believe this is the second time he's disabled his account in a huff.

that's not really the purpose of disabling one's account, is it? for dramatic gestures of site-leaving?

why are you asking me? all it took for me was four days of fever but the siren song of MeTa kept pulling me back.

The dramaturgy emphasis at your college's theatre program must have been very different from mine.

I thought you might know the answer.

I think you might like this story about a frog and a toad. It's not a superheavy metaphor, but I think it will explain things.

"Plus, to be fair, I think pent-up housebound broken-foot drinking-and-boredom sometimes got the better of him. I'm sure we'll see him again."

Yeah, the last time he wrote to me, he was pissed off about somebody bein' a ponce and I was all like, I disagree with that guy too, jon, but I don't care enough to go after him, so maybe just chill, or something. I dunno, I felt like he should be working on a book since he suddenly has the time and the booze, but maybe my procrastination works differently than his.

Never been to MetaChat. Thanks.

I checked it out once when I was flirting with the idea of becoming more heavily invested in the whole Metafilter experience than I am now and I found it to be . . . a little weird. And I spend time on Metafilter.

Jon's chilling out until the Obamadness dies down. As for me, have no fear. I plan to maintain enough "Give it a rest" pissing in your Golden Calf's threads for the both of us.

Oh, and I'm listening to Bruce Springsteen right now. Junior jonmc taskforce go!

When you don't see his footprints in the sand, that means he's carrying us. Or resting. Carrying us is very hard work with only the one good foot.

Thanks to those of you who gave me useful answers. *as a side note - No one could ever offend me enough to disable my account. And even if I'm being a prick sometimes, I tend not hold grudges or take shit personally. Difference of opinion is what brings me to this site.

I totally want to hold grudges and anyone with a different opinion from me makes me hate them intensely, but I can never remember who people are, so I will see somebody say something that pisses me off and I will think to myself "You are my enemy forever Mojitsu!" and then two days later I will be like "Who am I pissed off at? Mojojojo? MooMooMrCow? MadMaxBeyondChunderdome? Oh fuck it." and just move on. It sucks.

How is typing "Give it a rest, dersins" and then, at some point, quietly disabling your account a dramatic, hand-wavy exit gesture? He didn't even leave a "Fuck all y'all" note on his profile page. Much ado about nothing.

As well, why does a "temporary hiatus" require someone to disable their account?

To elaborate a little, it doesn't, but that's how some people tend to do it, and more power to 'em if that's what helps them rebalance their humours. A lot of people just walk quietly away for a while instead. Different strokes.

He mentioned he ran out of beer and seemed to be getting a little grumpy yesterday. He's probably taking a break and I'm sure he'll be fine in a week, gman.

I'm so damn tempted to disable my account right now.
