Yeah, I'm there with ya (not right now, but I had similar experiences back in the day). If no MeFits rise to the challenge, you might try meetups.com.

Or MeFites.

Drink some Troegs Nugget Nectar for me.

Sub-question: Is there any interest in a Central Pa. meetup?

State College mefite here. Always up for a meetup.

YES! I'm stranded in (sigh) Williamsport! Where and when, I'm there baby! I'm unemployed, newish to the area, and thus have a lot of free time and am pathetically desperate for intelligent conversation. In fact I'm scaring myself a little here now. Just count me in. I have no problem driving to Harrisburg, but maybe we could see if there's a place centrally located based on where we would all be coming from.

MonkeyToes, where are you?

I could do a central PA Meetup, but not necessarily Harrisburg, that's a bit of a bump. I could do something closer to State College. Even considered hosting one myself.

miagaille and I might be able to make it, depending on the date.

State College would work for me, or sio42's bar sounds ok too. What about a weekend afternoon?

I'm in Paradise (Amish Paradise!). Dangit, where are the Lancaster County Mefites!?
posted by DWRoelands at 6:17 AM on March 2, 2009

FWIW, Lancaster would work best for me. Lancaster Brewing Company, perhaps? Some Saturday afternoon?
posted by MonkeyToes at 6:15 PM on March 2, 2009

I'm afraid Lancaster's too far for me -- 2.5 hrs each way. Maybe we can do one meetup closer to State College and one closer to Harrisburg?

If a meeting were to occur in downtown State College, we ought to consider Herwig's. Nothing against the intersection room or whatever, but the food is much better at Herwig's and the rudeness of the staff is much more entertaining. I extend my invitation to host, but it would be in Linden Hall, several miles from downtown. If you're interested in a more rural meetup, with horses, cows, and kids, I would be happy to make pizza and provide beer.

Propose a date. How about the 27th of this month?
posted by Toekneesan at 2:23 PM on March 13, 2009

I could make that if it were in State College.

sio42: are you thinking of the Corner Room? Great milkshakes!

Wish I was back in State College, if only for the meetup.

I'll be there, Herwig's or otherwise! Though, it may be worth noting to the Bacchanalians that Herwig's does not have a bar. I would suggest either the Corner Room or Zeno's.
posted by The White Hat at 10:37 AM on March 25, 2009

Oh man, Zenos. I lost many brain cells there in the eighties.
posted by octothorpe at 5:54 PM on March 25, 2009

Not in SC anymore, or I would be there.

If it's on a Saturday night, Zeno's will be packed. And if they have a band, there won't be much in the way of conversation it's not big and really loud. Zeno's doesn't get really noisy until the band starts, so even it would be a good option if you get there earlier. And if you like beer, that might be your best option in State College. Zeno's has a very good selection of beers. I spent way too many hours and dollars in Zeno's during the time I lived in SC (late 90s until just recently).

There's a link to see what's scheduled. It's nice and quiet in the afternoon, most of the time.

I'm not sure what would be a good bar to have a conversation later on a Saturday night. If you start around dinner time and get a table somewhere, you probably would have some choices. Upstairs from Zeno's is Bill Pickle's Taproom, it's a new place owned by the same company. I think they have many of the same beers.

I agree that Zeno's will be packed. Anyone up for Cajun? How about Spats? Kinda spendy but great food and good libations. Less likely to be totally packed. Bill Pickle's could work but they might also be a bit busy on a Saturday night. There's also Mad Mex for the more thrifty but that could also be kind of crowded.

A place I know a lot of faculty go to get away from students is Whiskers out at the Penn Stater. It's a bit square but it's also a bit more adult.

Sounds like this is actually going to happen. This is exciting.

BTW, Zeno's is one of my favorite bars in the world, so if we decide on that, I'll survive the students and the crowds. I might not hear much of the conversation but I will be there.

Heck, 2 changes the density factor. Most students will still be sleeping off Friday's drunk. I think we could go anywhere at 2. Let's say Zeno's at 2. It's in the dead center of town. We could easily walk somewhere else if folks want fancy food. Herwig's is two blocks in one direction, Spats two in the other direction, though how do you feel about watching people suck the head out of a crayfish? Spats might not work. But there are about thirty other choices within five blocks.

Need directions?

Zeno's is downstairs.

See youns there.

Oh and why don't you add the tags State College and Pennsylvania to this post. Maybe that will catch the attention of a few lurkers.

This is so cool. My brother lives right near State College (Rebersburg,) and I was just telling him about metafilter, and how they were everywhere, and that though us New Yorkers reign supreme, even a State College meetup would draw at least a few people.
posted by StickyCarpet at 3:04 PM on April 2, 2009

Rebersburg? Wow! My friend in college (Penn State, natch) was a descendant of the guy that founded the town. I believe he also had a building named after him on campus.

You could send your brother as your State College proxy.

You're not meeting at Otto's?

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!?!?

I miss State College...
posted by slogger at 9:56 AM on April 9, 2009

I would point out that Zeno's offers over 300 different beers and they are current serving, I believe it's a Stout, that Otto's is brewing for them exclusively. In other words, I think you can actually get more different kinds of Otto's beers at Zeno's than you can currently get at Otto's.

Of course the food at Otto's is much better, and mostly local ingredients.

Sweet, I didn't miss this. Pretty sure 4/25 is Blue and White Weekend, so it's basically a home football weekend here if that's the case. Though 2:00 would probably be during the actual game so it might not be as bad.

I'm not sure if my brother will attend, but if anyone wanting to go this needs a place to stay, I might be able get you a bed at his place. Memail me.

If there's a home game, lodgings will be scarce.

Damn you blasted contest! 'Tis Spring! Must you foul every season with your inebriated and rioting masses‽

Well, I'll still show up. I've got a beard, round glasses, and a long ponytail. I'll also subtly be wearing my Metafilter t-shirt.
posted by Toekneesan at 5:28 PM on April 24, 2009

I'll be wearing a white shirt, may or may not be sporting stubble, and will be standing near the guy in the Metafilter t-shirt.

I'll be the one in the White Sox shirt staggering in fifteen minutes late after his 30-mile bike ride.

My brother won't make it mid-afternoon. Fishing season just opened, and he's running around stocking ponds and lakes with the trout he's raised in his fish farm in Rebersburg , and delivers in a modified antique fire truck (Elk Creek Fish Hatchery, if you drive by and see a crusty, survivalist, bearded gent, stop in and introduce yourself).
posted by StickyCarpet at 10:58 AM on April 25, 2009

Sorry I missed this; I've been trying to get over a bug the last couple of days so after the bike ride I needed to go sleep for a couple of hours. We should try another one sometime...

No pics, just me and The White Hat. Couple of hours of who are you and why do you do that. It was great but I owe that to the company. Hope to see more of youns next time.
