Dude. The savanna? Nice huts with central hearths, cave art, little statues carved from bone or antlers or ivory, hunt and fish all day, can't throw a rock without something juicy winding up on the end of it, no hang ups yet about religion or overpopulation, fertile unpolluted soil, honey to make food sweet. Pffft. It was even better in the trees.

Of the ten most recent posts to the front page, the only one that even really looks like newsfilter is the story about how to integrate immigrants into Chicago. I don't think that's what you're talking about. The homebrew calculator is awesome, the pictures of the grand canyon from the year before I was born are neat, the scientific image post is exactly the sort of thing you'd expect to see on metafilter and the same goes for the "what kind of software do you use" post.

I think your premise is flawed.

For as long as I've read MeFi (probably 8 years,) and for that matter Fark (also about 8 years,) there have been posts which fall into the unfortunate "Fark + Outrage = Metafilter" formula.

Hypothesis: There is something about the pressures of this time of year that seems to make steam come out of the ears of Metafilterists - and this presents as GRAR! posts to MetaTalk.

(and though this seems to be demonstrated by your MeTa history, B1tr0t, i'm by no means singling you out.)

I move that we ban the period between november 15th and January 5th and replace it with re-runs of Perfect Strangers. Man, that show was awesome.

Dag, titrat. Yr ass got owned in this thread. ESP. when it comes to the amount of whinging you do vs the amount of contributing you do. This meta is totally without merit and wrong.

Also, it would have been funnier and less obnoxious if you had called the thread 'metafailter'. Judging by your posting history in meta obnoxiousness isn't really of much concern to you.

b1tr0t, as much as I want to join in on the pile-on, I'll refrain. Now dig, you know damn well that since 2004, the web has become the mainstream for a broad segment of the population of our little planet. It is no longer the privileged realm of the tech savvy. MeFi has almost 100,000 members now, many of them are admitted 'net n00bs, like myself. With people like me joining the community here, the blue is going to reflect our use of the web in general. That means more mainstream, more newsfilter, more SLYT, more crap (in some people's opinion). You seem to be pining for a day that has passed. 'Best of the Web' does not mean what it did even two years ago, much less five. Nothing you can do about it, let it go.

Also, you don't have to click shit that doesn't meet your standards. Problem solved.

Y'know, a couple weeks ago, I was riding the uptown N train at about 8pm on a friday, when this gaggle of women got on at 23rd street. From their clothes and demanor I assumed they were secretaries. They were all shithammered. They were carrying big plastic juice cups from 7-11 and Dunkin' Donuts and one of them was pouring vodka out of a bagged bottle into them. They were talking loudly about about boobs and stuff. Then they started complimenting eachothers behinds and smacking eachother on the butt. (I am not making this up.) As a drinker, I was disgusted with their amatuerishness. As a man, however....

Anyway, as I listened to their conversation, it turned out they were all librarians. They got off at 59th street.
