Rainy Day fund? Mad Money? Vacation Fund? Bastard Tax? Idiot Tax? January 7, 2010 1:56 PM   Subscribe

I know you can donate via PayPal to MetaFilter, but how do I donate specifically to a vacation or coffee or chocolate fund for the mods?

I've lately been full of praise for the mods, whom I think do an excellent job at a usually pretty thankless job, herding us cats through an infinite variety of mazes, keeping the peace in endless potential fight clubs.

I got to thinking that aside from just typing and giving praise it seems like a gift or donation would be in order. When I know I'm being high-maintenance, I'd like to tip my mods and make sure that at least they get something out of wrangling me and countless other MeFites day after day after day.

Or would I just put it in the general PayPal bucket with a note on it? Or is that stuff just not done?

It's a nice thought, but Matt pays us well and our schedules are fairly fluid. Probably as much as anything I personally have a hard time remembering to take explicit time off since this place and the internet in general is a hangout as well as a workplace.

If we tried to keep our more negative aspects to a minimum, both as individuals and as a community, that would make their jobs easier and more fun, so win win!

or we could just do a tip jar based on their deletion reasons

Y'know, given a lot of the stuff 'moonMan has regaled me with that he "made himself" in Garage Band, I'm going to go ahead and say that it is probably a tribute to you that some of us (and I'm including myself here) don't contribute to Music.

(I mean, I can sing just fine, but no one wants to hear the "songs" that I come up with for my cat. Not even the cat.)

I'm glad to hear that the mods are financially happy because the mods are also awesome and deserve every single penny they get. And all of the chocolate, coffee, postcards, and banjos as well.

Why don't you come to London? If you like we can go out to Hakkasan and get one of their £11,500 bottles of whisky. I've always wanted to try them. At today's exchange rate (*checks calculator*) we should be able to down 7 or 8 with your US dollars.
Or perhaps a fine meal and a few bottles of Chateaux Margaux (1961) at Alain Ducasse down in Paris.

Hoping to hear from you soon,
Your friend,

Cortex, you really don't want me to post anything to music. Seriously.

Sending postcards I can do.

But I'd get any or all of the mods a beer, if I were less geographically challenged, and some kind of chip-in tip thing would be great for that. If you have another "couple of mods in the same place" meetup, maybe you should look into setting something up so that us distributed members can display our appreciation.

Or maybe I should just find the bar's location and fed-ex a plate of beans, a fish, some pants, a chicken, and an incontinent elephant...

Let's pretend we're Wensleydale! Let's pretend we're in an octagon! (repeat ad nauseum)

More traditional, to the tune of "Oh My Darlin' Clementine"

Oh my darlin', oh my darlin', oh my darlin' Wensleydale, you are my favorite kitty, yes you are oh Wensleydale.

I love sending postcards, who wants one from Saskatoon Saskatchewan in Canada? MeMail me your postal address :)

A friend of mine has been sending postcards to a random secretary in another department at our university for a few years now, just as something amusing to do - funny anectodes of the trip, "wish you were here"'s, etc, all good spirited non-creepy fun. He actually met her for the first time a few months ago in passing. She recognized his name and realized this is the guy who's been sending all the cards. (pause for reaction.... .... .... ) Turns out her life had a turn for the worse in the year and a half prior (cancer in the family and a divorce, I think) but these cards were really uplifting to her - would keep her smiling for days afterwards.

next up, we merge pet songs with the music swap and have a 'cat song swap'.

dog songs are fun, too. i picked up the habit from one of my brothers, who lived alone and worked alone with nobody but his dog for company for waaaaaaaay too long. so he'd sing songs to and about his dog regardless of whether the dog was there, or whether or not anyone else was around. this occasionally caused a bit of friction when we worked together.
