Chapel Hill/Carrboro Meet-up? April 15, 2010 6:40 AM   Subscribe

Time for a Chapel Hill/Carrboro Meet-up?

It's been very nice outside recently and that makes me think we ought to drink together again. I don't think we've gotten together since Cortex's historic visit. Anyone else interested? We could wait until the end of the semester if that would help anyone. It's spring. My pace is leisurely.

I'm in. I'm moving away on June 12th, and wanted to be sure to see everyone again before I left. Almost anytime is good for me, except Thursdays.

Pater, where are you going??

I'm in, probably.

he might not wanna take you.

I should mention that Thursdays and Saturdays are a little complicated for me, but I can rearrange with prior notice.

If we wait for the end of the semester I would be up for it. Plus we could avoid this weird cold snap. Maybe the first or second week of May?

what does this mean?

I'm game for a meetup, especially if it is after 7pm.

I'm off to Texas, where I will lay the groundwork for my eventual campaign for a spot on the state board of education, and begin my takeover of America. Anyone who wants to emigrate with me is welcome.

I'm in. I welcome evening distractions from my thesis. Where to? The Station again?

I am extremely shy but might be able to force myself to come out.

I would really like to say that I am in, but between surgery, then a trip to Pittsburgh in early May, it's gonna be tough. I will be there, at least in spirit. I would love to say goodbye to Pater Aletheias, but my best shot would be last weekend May/first weekend June.

I may be in the area the first week of May, so I'm adding this thread to my Recent Activity.

I'm in, maybe, depending on whenever it is.

k8lin, you'll have at least one other SILS kid there. Do come!

What's a SILS kid? Is it too late for me to become one?
posted by Pater Aletheias at 3:48 PM on April 15, 2010

If you are leaving in June, PA, yes.

School of Information and Library Science. Everyone I know either goes there, is married to someone who goes there, obtained a degree from there, or worked there.

I'd be up for a mid-May/early June meetup.

How do you guys feel about Friday, May 14th about 7:30 pm? We can do Southern Rail again if that suits people.
posted by thivaia at 4:15 PM on April 15, 2010

Another SILS kid here. I'll be moving the first week of May, but could probably come out anyway (I'll need the break). The only evening I'm unavailable is May 1st. I work some Thursdays, but I'm off by 8pm.

on preview:
May 14th would work for me (I'll leave my other availability above in case of rescheduling).

As always, I'm available for round-trip rides anywhere in the Triangle if you need one. (Although I can't promise I won't make a wrong turn somewhere along the way, as plant can attest.)

Can we do a Friday before? I'm tied up that day.
posted by pinky at 5:17 PM on April 15, 2010

Oh man, I've been branded as a SILS kid. What outed me, my good looks and charm, or my constant harping about archives?
posted by k8lin at 5:40 PM on April 15, 2010

Hey! Hey! I'm in. Not sure when I can, but I'm in!

I can do the 14th. I'll bring along D.C.
posted by Stewriffic at 7:07 PM on April 15, 2010

I am actually free on the 14th, and by then, maybe my doctor will have released me to drink liberally. And no, not all of us are SILS kids (although we wish we were...)
posted by msali at 7:39 PM on April 15, 2010

Maybe I will come! I work till 9, but people will still be around then, right?
posted by Fui Non Sum at 7:42 PM on April 15, 2010

Oh, also I am a former SILS kid, so.
posted by Fui Non Sum at 7:43 PM on April 15, 2010

Everyone wants to be a SILS kid. They are kind of the rockstars of of Ch/C. They certainly party like rockstars, that's for sure.

I don't think I'll be able to make it to the meetup, not being a SILS kid (or more importanly, having moved to NY). *frowny face*

Seeing as how I'm unable to enter any local libraries owing to the fact that I have never returned a library book (or, for that matter, a DVD rental) on time in my life (and I have yet to pay the fines), I'm probably persona non grata among the local working librarian population. However, I have been to several of the Dance Parties the SILS kids are all to apt to host and I can verify that future librarians party on level with MFA fiction writers, but they are better dancers and more interesting hair.

Okay, so, I'm gonna mark the 14th because it seems like that will work for most people. See you there!

There should be a "have" between the "and" and the "more" above.
posted by thivaia at 7:36 AM on April 16, 2010

I am not a SILS kid (but most of my friends are). I definitely hope to be there. As far as I know, I'm doing nothing but writing my dissertation for all of May, so surely I can take a night off whatever night y'all decide.

I don't suppose ther's any interest in the Friday before, like Pinky suggested?

I'm in! Can't make it until 8:00 or so, but I'll be there.

Another SILS kid here - starting an MSIS this fall. Will definitely come by for at least a drink or two to meet some of my fellow travelers and other simpatico MeFites. Looking forward to it.

I am supposed to be watching my kids Friday, but I may try to pawn them off on my mother for a few hours.

Also, I applied to SILS years ago and got in, but took an IT job instead. So am I at least sort of in the club?

So... Southern Rail at 7:30?
posted by dmo at 3:44 PM on May 12, 2010

Southern Rail at ~7:30 sounds good, and as a suggestion for an afterparty there's the show at Nightlight on Rosemary Street:

MC Bingo Blower - Skip of A/V Geeks [MeFi's own] hosting the evening with bingo + prizes!
Max Legroom (Kevin Eugene Clark & Neill Prewitt) - 2 collaborative sets: one video (late 80s commercial video jam) and one music (omnicord-driven funk)
Workday/Schoolnight - synth-punk anthems & thrift store audio cassettes set to casio tunes + VHS sampling, from Greensboro
DJ Yes! Sputnik - hot Raleigh dj spinning eclectic dance music afterwards

It's enough of a combo to get me to drive from Raleigh, anyway. :)

Hey I'm going to be at that Nightlight show! Won't be able to make it to the meet-up proper, but look for your friendly, neighborhood fat-blond-girl in a yellow dress and say hi! Yes, I already know what I'll likely be wearing. And I'll definitely be drinking lots of gin.

What's the protocol to poke people and remind them that we have this meetup? Sideblog? New meta post? Pester contacts and 'nearby users' in my profile via mefimail? Also don't forget your Silly Hats.

Ha! Maybe if msali had shown up *someone* at the table other than me would have known about that there really was a heartwrenching 70s disco rollerskating movie with Bow Wow in it.

They all thought I was crazy, msali.
