Targeted AskMe? June 20, 2010 5:16 AM   Subscribe

I have expertise in X, but I don't care about A-W, or Y and Z, so I don't check the green very often. I also just asked a question about F, and I'm sure there are F experts that steer clear of the green for the same reasons I do. AskMeFi moves fast. Faster than ponies?

Is there a setting that would notify me when an Ask question matches tags that I've listed as areas of expertise (or that match tags of questions in which I've been marked as best answer - though these tags'd need to be filtered for noise)? I don't really want an email or a MeMail, perhaps just an extra tab on my profile that lists questions I might be better placed to answer.

If not, can I have one?

I feel like if someone asks a question at X o'clock their time, it could be page 2 by the time Y o'clock rolls around in the States (for example), and they could miss that vital connection. I also think a feature like this would encourage better tagging of questions and, ultimately, more resolved.

There is the risk that people might, as a result, no longer read the front page of Ask, but I imagine a lot of people don't anyway because questions about what sexygirl153 should do while she's in Kansas City are noise to people that haven't been to Kansas City.

I vaguely remember a tag cloud of user interests based on questions answered but the FAQ says this has been gone for a couple of years?

I imagine this has been raised in the past, so close/delete/&c. if necessary.

The tag pages have RSS feeds and there are plenty of web-based feed aggregators. e.g. Google Reader

Thus the New Zealand tag page has a feed at http://ask.metafilter.com/tags/newzealand/rss

This sounds a lot like the "My Ask" tab on the far right. It allows you to set favourite categories and tags and then generates a feed of just those questions. It even suggests tags you might want to select based on your history.

If you are logged in and go to AskMe you will see little tabs on the right. One is My Ask which will pull out questions for you to answer based on your history. Check that out.

You've been nervous clicking links? I can tell you right now, there's no goatse lurking there.

There should be annual post to to MetaTalk by the mods listing all the features of the site, just so users are made of aware of all the sunshine goodness they're missing out on.

You really should care about Y and Z, they are pretty important in today's world. A-W are kind of fading in importance, though.

Don't let Skynet get news of this new technology or there are going to be a lot of dead ponies.

I hadn't caught that tags were a My Ask option, so my Ask site experience has just been significantly improved. Thank you mods!

I would like a pony where every so often (maybe once a week) someone writes an essay on "Amazingly useful bits of the MeFi user interface you might be oblivious to." These could all be linked from a tab on the far right side of the MetaTalk page where I would never notice them and....

Damn!
