Gaga for MeFiSwap! Mailing deadline Saturday August 21! August 14, 2010 6:02 AM   Subscribe

Rah rah ah-ah-ah!
Ro mah ro-mah-mah!
MeFi Ooh-la-la!
Want your CD swap mixes!
Reminder: The MeFiSwap mid-year 2010 mailing deadline is one week from today, Saturday, Aug. 21st.

- If you can't make the deadline, for whatever reason, email your swapset to let them know. Communication is key; don't leave a swapper hangin' is all, you know?

- If, in a while, you figure a member of your swapset just isn't going to come through, please let me know (via email) so I can try contacting them and/or make a note for the next swap.

- Speaking of the next swap, keep an eye out in November!

- Have your received any mixes? Sent yours out? Tell us, yes!

- Do you have any suggestions on how to run these swaps better?

Thank you everyone for being, like, 8 times awesome-er than Lady Gaga could even dream of being and swapping music with MeFites. You rock!

For once I was ahead of the deadline! My Songs for Swinging Sock Puppets mix is done and and packaged to mail on Monday (the overseas went out last week). Way psyched to see what everyone puts together. And thanks carsonb for wrangling the whole mixswap beast.

Mix, created with care & great gnashing of teeth, (oh, loudness wars, how you confound me) 2-page rant/tracklisting written -- 2 out of six copies burned. Progress! (these things are always more work than I suspect going in, but quite fun to construct)

Love Games: vol. 3 (mine) out the door, received vol. 4 (trarnoir's) already, 1 and 5 say they are in the mail, waiting anxiously on 2 and 6.

Also: In the previous thread Brandon B. mentioned that digital copies of some swapsets were put online for the previous swap. Anyone know the logistics of this? I'd love to hear some of the other sets people were talking about creating for this one.

I suffered a external hard-drive crash while compiling my mix, resulting in the possible loss of 8,000 songs. I'm weirdly not upset about it. It almost feels liberating.

Anyway, I finished the mix, Hisses and Beeps, on Friday out of songs that survived and hope to get 'em burnt on Monday.

I've had my mix done since May. (Yes, that's right I'm an early achiever.) But I'm also a lazy dork, and haven't gotten the packaging together for them yet at all. I'm a bad bad person. This will be rectified this weekend, and mixes will go out on time.

Posted mine a few days ago, but they're all going overseas so might still be a little while. I'm planning on putting the cover art, track listing and accompanying Spotify/last.fm playlist on my website shortly, but I'll wait until my swapset report that they've got it first. Fun stuff, I can't wait to see what my co-conspirators have come up with.

Sent out the hit soundtrack to the hit summer indie breakout movie of the (hit) summer to the Teeths. Note: not an actual soundtrack, though it's a movie that should probably be made. I'll put it (and the surprisingly good cover art) up in a bit. It's two discs, so I think I'll wait for my bandwidth month to roll around.

Like ZsigE I'm overseas from all my swappers, so it'll be some time before they get them - hence sending out a little early.

Oh man, just remembered I deleted the cover art a couple of days ago. Was able to get it from my backup though. Kids! Back up your hard drive - if you need help, ask a nerd!

I made up for my month-late mailout during the Winter Swap and had mine out early this time around - I know for sure that two of mine have already been delivered.
Still waiting for my first arrival here but I expect they will start to pour in throughout the week.
My theme was 'Best of the Weather'. I really like that novel-soundtrack idea though, might try something like that on the next one.

Thanks to carsonb for all the hard work you put in on this. Such a great concept ... when I was making mine I burned a few test copies and gave them to friends for feedback, they were all so intrigued by the idea that they may sign up on Metafilter just to get in on these swaps.

What's the best method to mail? I've got everything prepped, but I'm just trying to figure out what method would be best using US Postal Service? I'm ready to just throw it into a small manila envelope and weigh it at the auto-postage thing.
posted by SNWidget at 11:57 AM on August 17, 2010

Basic envelopes don't cut it - I got a smashed CD in a Hallmark envelope last swap. I recommend bubble mailers like the ones you can find at Staples.
posted by ChuqD at 12:52 PM on August 17, 2010

Living in Canada, I'm willing to roll the dice on regular envelopes backed up by an FTP swap if something terrible happens -- it gets EXPENSIVE to mail stuff to/from here when the envelope exceeds standard size. I usually pack the CD in a slim case and cross my fingers.
posted by Shepherd at 1:57 PM on August 17, 2010

ChuqD is right—padded mailers are the best way to ensure an intact mix makes it to its destination. Having to buy a bunch every time is a pain though, so after shelling out for the first batch I've been saving them swap-to-swap and reusing the ones others sent to me.
posted by carsonb at 1:59 PM on August 17, 2010 [1 favorite]

I sent an email to The Again Agains about a small error in my mailing address, but I thought I'd post here too in case anyone used a non-primary email address for the swap. :)

Padded mailers, or bubble wrap around the discs inside your manila envelopes...

Then taking the time to go to the post office where real people help you, and saying that you want to send it the cheapest way. It takes longer, but you'll end up saving enough to get a latte or something.

So, burning a CD with iTunes, where you've bought some tracks off of iTunes and they're in AAC format. That should be usable by others on Mac or PC platforms, right? Using you've uploaded the CD tracks to Gracenotes, yes?

So, burning a CD with iTunes, where you've bought some tracks off of iTunes and they're in AAC format.

You should be burning Audio CDs, not data or mp3 cds. This will convert the song, regardless of original format, into the format which is played by all CD players everywhere. Gracenote has nothing to do with this -- it's simply a way for programs such as iTunes to look up track information so you don't have to type in all the tags by hand.
posted by hippybear at 11:04 AM on August 18, 2010

So, burning a CD with iTunes, where you've bought some tracks off of iTunes and they're in AAC format.

There shouldn't be any DRM issue with burning a disc in iTunes. The tracks don't get burned in the AAC format; they're converted to WAV before they're put to disc, so I'm pretty sure there won't be any playback issues. You can always burn one and check it in your car or DVD player or whatever.
posted by carsonb at 11:05 AM on August 18, 2010

Yeah, I've burned a test and it seems to work cross platform, but one always worries or at least I do. Thanks for the heads up.
posted by nomadicink at 11:08 AM on August 18, 2010

Yeah the only problem I had burning 5 CDs that include iTunes purchased tracks is that iTunes will give you pop-up warnings telling you "you know, I have my doubts about what your're doing here. This better be for personal use." They'll work on any old platform if you're burning an audio CD.
posted by Kirk Grim at 2:27 PM on August 18, 2010

Now I'm noticing that the cover I made for my discs is fading. Probably because I used a thicker paper in the colour laser and the toner didn't fuse properly. If anyone in the Love Games wants, I can send the cover as a PDF ( or send the track info so you can redo the cover). Sorry about that, gang - I was trying for a sturdy foldable all-in-one-sheet thing but it had an unexpected drawback.

Once of my favorite bands is the alt country group 16 Horsepower. Though a bit dark at times, I've always enjoyed their lyrics, music and arrangements. Rather than put together a CD of just their music, tempting as that way, a mix bands in that same genare seemed more interesting. I went to Last.fm and played the radio station for 16 Horsepower and listened to that for a few days, making a list of stuff that caught my ear. A little more listening to those bands, cut a few from the list and what's left? An up and down mix of modern day Americana that goes in the mail tomorrow morning:

The Summer Boys
A Fiery & Righteous Tome of Maddening Music About Life & Love From The Twisted & Seedy Backroads of Americana

Front art, inner art

Track listings below, the link for the band name goes to their Last.fm page, which gives details on the band. I really liked this mix, listened to it over and over for the past month or so. As such, throwing up mp3s for the entire internet to download doesn’t seem quite right, so I encourage you guys to follow the links below and check out the bands yourself. If you find something you like, put some money in the groups pocket. If you’d like to do a private one-on-one swap of this CD with one of yours, hit me up via Mefimail.

1. Everything is Everywhere
The Broadsides
Of Many Fouls and Mishaps

It was hard to resist this one, as soon as I heard I knew it would be the first track. It perfectly captures a Monday morning, right after the alarm has gone off and you really don’t want to get up, it’s going to be one of those days and you know it. But you can’t avoid the day, so you might as face it with that resigned cheerful as you spot the wave of craziness building on the horizon.

2. Ashes
The Bad Things
The Bad Things

That wave crazy has arrived and rather than let it overwhelm you, hop on that bad boy and ride it for all it’s worth. You could slip any minute sure, but for whatever reason you’re ahead of the curve and dealing with it with you dance through the morning. You are a God, merrily dancing above the chaos and ashes as you listen to this track

3. When Jesus Comes
Uncle Sinner
Ballads and Mental Breakdowns

This one almost didn’t make the cut and might not of if I didn’t feel as the mix needed 12, not 11 songs. It’s sparsely lush and slower paced for a nice break from the previous songs and spliced with lines from sermon, real or fake, I don’t know.

4. This Is How We Do Things In the Country
Slim Cessna’s Auto Club
Jesus Let Me Down

Why oh why are things like that at home/work/the city/life/the world? Because that’s how they do things. Yeah, that’s a bit crazy, but this song has a lot of fun with the idea, even as pokes at the stupidity of that mentality.

5. Of Silas Fauntleroy’s Willingness to Impress the Panel
Jay Munly
Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots

How can you not love a song with a title like that? Jay Munly (also a member of Slim Cessna’s Auto Club) is an excellent storyteller expertly backed by the cello, violins and harmonies of The Lee Lewi Harlots in an uptempo tale of one man’s willingness to make his love happy, by getting her teeth cleaned for the upcoming dance. Yeah, you heard that right. Shut and dance.

Jay Munly was one of two great finds as mad this mix. The CD this track is from, Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlets, should definitely be bought and enjoyed. Here’s a YouTube clip of him and the harlots playing live, one of my fav songs from the CD, The Leavening of the Spit Bread Girls and another, (warning some lyrics at the beginning may cause triggers in some) Big Black Bull Comes Like Caeser.

6. Jack On Fire
Blanche
If We Can’t Trust the Doctors

Something slower and flowing, pouring delicately out as man and woman sing of love to grow old with. It’s a slow and earthy track, almost like a modern day version of what old school country might sound like today.

7. Penitentiary Highball
Reverend Glasseye
Black River Falls

Sweet toe tapping beat and melodies, wrapped around a remembrance of love from an ex members of Slim Cessna’s Auto Club. Reverend Glasseye is the other great find from making this mix, a glorious blend of alt and old school country, cabaret and eastern european/gypsy music (at least I think so). The stuff has to be heard, do yourself a favor and check out more. Here’s a few YouTube samples showcasing the variety and richness in their sound, The Midnight Cabaret, Carnival of Pills, 17 Lashes and a few streaming MP3s from the band’s website.

8. House of Pain
Johnny Dowd
Cruel Words

Is that a drum machine in the background, wedded to a bit of soul and funk with a hint of old school hip hop? Yes, yes dear reader it is and it works beautifully.

9. I Can Waltz
Don Chambers & GOAT
Zebulon

A cousin to Ralph Stanley’s “O Death,” except here there is no fear of death, only the stubborn celebration of life from an imperfect man.

10. Napoli
Giant Sand
Is All Over the Map

Enjoy the lounge and latin infused melodies of Napoli, the coast on the gentle voice of Howe Gelb. Slow down, lie back and let it take it take you ashore.

11. San Telmo
Tarantella
Esqueletos

Filled with slow burning desire and yearning, San Telmo wraps you in a warm blanket and pulls you close. What comes next will be known only to you, the other person and a thousand fireflies.

12. Thousand Star Hotel
Antic Clay
Hilarious Death Blues

Deliciously and unapologetically sweet, Thousand Star Hotel walks right to that sappy piece of your heart, and gently pulls you along. Clay’s deep voice is accompanied only by a guitar and the tender yearnings to see all that is good in life. Not a bad way to end a CD, no?

My mix is largely dub reggae and some out-there 70s soul and jazz, so I called it "My Stash" and covered the sleeve in tin foil and put the hole thing in a ziplock bag. No pics though, sorry.
posted by Kirk Grim at 10:03 AM on August 23, 2010

Track listing for My Stash:

I Wanna Know if it's Good to You - Funkadelic
Congoman - The Congos
Real Hot - Lennie Hibbert
Blue Nile - Alice Coltrane
Mandela Pt 2 - The Abyssinians
Collie Weed - Barrington Levy
Underground Root - Lee Perry
Thinking Black - Ike Turner & The Kings of Rhythm
Lalune Blanche - Steve Davis
Scratch the Dub Organizer - Lee Perry
Nuff Sugar - Alkaline
Tom Cat (Electric Mud version) - Muddy Waters
Big Bad Organ - Jackie Mittoo
Night & Day - Toots & The Maytals
Home Rule - Lloyd McNeill
Julani - Yesterday's New Quintet
The Right Way - Prince Far-I
Love in Outer Space - Sun Ra

Basically if you're gonna listen to it, you'll need something better the average low-end boombox or computer speakers. A decent stereo (or computer with subwoofer or somesuch) or headphones are best because loud, low bass is probably the biggest theme of the whole thing and crappy speakers don't do loud and low bass AT ALL in my experience.

My mix: SUNPOP

1. Cults - Go Outside
2. The Radio Dept. - Heaven's On Fire
3. Air France with Roos - GBG Belongs To Us
4. Cut Copy - Where I'm Going
5. The Depreciation Guild - Dream About Me
6. Tennis - Marathon
7. Casiokids - Finn Bikkjen!
8. The Tough Alliance - Neo Violence
9. Toro y Moi - Causers Of This
10. Delorean - Real Love
11. Tanlines - Real Life (Memory Tapes Remix)
12. Bye Bye Bicycle - Haby Bay
13. Little Dragon - My Step
14. Guitar - Melt
15. School Of Seven Bells - Half Asleep
16. jj - And Now

For a carefree summery SUN POP mix, this ends up going to some surprisingly stormy, emotionally fraught places. By the last song you might even shed a tear or two. Where did that come from? My mixes operate on their own logic and I'm powerless to control them.

Oh man, it's really embarrassing to be the organizer of this thing, the setter of deadlines, etc. and then miss the fucking deadline. (Well... I'm like 2 weeks early on the Latecomers' deadline!) I spent all my free time today wrapping a rampaging hoard of cds in bubble wrap, and then plan to drop them off at the PO tomorrow afternoon. Received two so far, and looking forward to downloading the linked sets. I'll put a link up to mine in a week or so (to give my Brown Eyes peeps time for dibs =).

I sent mine out a couple days ago (a bit late, sorry!) I've gotten one so far, from rhapsodie. Listened to half so far, it's great!

Sorry for the delay -- The State is an opaque and slow-moving entity, and getting it to respond takes all of your days and then some, when someone gets stuck. I've spent the last 4 days living inside of a Kafka novel, but am now back to my regularly scheduled programming. Will get these in the tomorrow's mail.

gemmy's mix was a lot of fun; I listened to it while driving across Massachusetts yesterday. If it looks interesting to you, you should check it out.

I have a special awesome story to share. I sent my mixes out last weekend to my 5 swap partners, all of whom are total strangers to me. A couple days ago, I got this MeMail:

I was over at my friend _____'s house the other day when the postman came by and he said "wow, I bet that's my mefi mix!" and ran and got it, as I was looking it over, I thought wow, that cannot possibly be the person I think it is, and hey, turns out it was.

Yeah, one of my swap partners is friends with this old friend of mine with whom I had completely lost touch for the past several years. And we would probably not have been reunited, were it not for the swap and the insane coincidence. Thanks, MeFi. :)

Woah! Special and awesome indeed!

Birds have been fluttering around my truck all week, by the bye. =)

Yay, finally sat down and opened up the two CDs I have so far, from ZsigE and artlung. Good stuff so far, thanks guys! I'm making some notes on my site about the swap, so keep an eye there if you're inclined to hear more about my mix or the mixes I receive.

In the meantime, here's hoping my (sent-slightly-late) CDs have started to arrive at the homes of my fellow Poker Faces and that they each find at least a song or two that they like.

Thanks again for setting this up carsonb, much appreciated.

Hello the Alejandros!

bannanafish, received your awesome mix, thanks so much. Am at the post office this very moment mailing off my terribly late mixes to the rest of my swapmates. I apologise for the delay, thanks for your patience. (And cheers once again to carsonb for making it happen.)

I have finally gotten my mix all zipped up and uploaded -- if you're interested, you can download and enjoy (or not):

3. "Rain," Steve Forbert

Bonjour, mes amis!

I thought I'd take this opportunity to share some (mostly) homegrown music that I'm listening to and loving here in Quebec these days, from the post-rock noodling of the Banjo Consortium through the delicate sounds of Émilie Simon, on up to the Zappa cover band Dangerous Kitchen, the raucous Franglais of Radio Radio, and the beautiful, but deeply unsettling, Pierre Lapointe.

All French (except for Zomby Woof, a Zappa cover, and chunks of 9-Piece Luggage Set, which is an Acadian English-French patois), but still worth a listen. Émilie Simon is France-French, Radio Radio is from the Maritimes, and (I believe) everyone else here is born and bred Québecois.

If you only make time for a few tracks, I can't recommend Coeur du Pirate enough (you'll fall in love, even if you don't understand a word of it), 9-Piece Luggage Set is lots of fun, and the Monsieur Mono track was on a CD I left on repeat before going to sleep; I woke up at 3 a.m. because "La Dernière Chanson" was playing and I was weeping in my sleep. Damien Robataille is funny and frantic and -- Lord, it's all good. I don't know.

I've enjoyed doing this so much that I'm considering making an English-language blog about great Quebec music, if time ever allows. I tinkered with things in Audacity to crossblend a bit, so try to burn gapless if you're making a CD.

Banjo Consortum - Une Soirée Kebekoise
Emilie Simon - Opium
Coeur du Pirate - Berceuse
Melon Galia - Il Fallait Bien
Damien Robataille - L'Homme Qui Me Ressemble
Cowboys Fringants - Entre Deux Taxis
Tété - Emma Stanton
Pierre Lapointe - Les Vertiges d'En Haut
Pierre Lapointe - Au Bar des Suicidés
Sebastien Lacombe - T'en Trouveras Pas
Mes Aieux - Chaque Jour
Jane Birkin - Il Fait Nuit
La Bottine Souriante - Chanson des Pommes de Terre
Les Charbonniers d'Enfer - Au Diable les Avocats
The Dangerous Kitchen - Zomby Woof
Radio Radio - 9-Piece Luggage Set
Monsieur Mono - La Dernière Chanson

I've gotten all my CDs and am slowly working my way through them, plus downloading the posted albums--this has been super, super fun.

Unfortunately, it has also confirmed to me that I am definitely not interesting or cool enough for this sort of thing. Sorry, Boys Boys Boys.

I disagree, MeghanC. If there's any area of MetaFilter where people agree everything is relative, it's in these swaps (postcard, gift, music, whichever type). There's no way I (and I think most other swappers) would ever want to get 5 discs of the same stuff I sent out - where would the novelty be in that? Besides, swappers are self-selected musical eclectics. If they can't handle your Speed Punk Tuba megamix, they're not real swappers.

I'm severely late to the party, but here's a link to a .zip file of my mix, plus the cover art:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11361888/Running%20Gels%20by%20Moonlight--%20Dbox%20zip.zip

As promised in the original thread, it contains avant-garde bagpipe music, experimental glass music, throat singing, and Hungarian punk (though I went for ethno-punk instead of jazz-punk.)

I made it a two disc-set, because that allowed me the room to make it an eclectic and enjoyable listening experience, with decent flow and a chance of pleasing most people at least a little bit, instead of being just a stunt comp full of weird shit.

As a bonus, it also allowed me the room to including a didgeridoo/kulning track (a good one, which I only found this summer-- I'd had one before but it was total ass-- the sort of thing you'd put on to make people go home at the end of a party), as well as a pleasant bit of waterphone.

Hope y'all dig. Cheers.
