Great N00b Influx of '04 November 18, 2011 8:30 AM   Subscribe

Wow. It's just occurred to me that it was 7 years ago today that I signed up during the Great N00b Influx of '04. The day when, officially, this place started going to the dogs (in a good way).

18th Novemberers, sing out!

I'm a 11/23'er. Am I remembering correctly that there were only a limited number of memberships available per day? I seem to recall trying for a few days before I could actually get a membership.

If I only knew I would spend the next seven years screwing around on here when I should have been working. Worst $5 I ever spent!

Apparently I thought about it for almost a month before deciding that, yes, it might be a good idea to sign up. That worked out well enough.

I was just thinking about how 7 years have gone by. SEVEN YEARS. The mind boggles.

Perhaps data mavens can parse what day (or date range) has the most active members. And by active, I mean revered and beloved. I think the first wave of $5 n00bs surely represents MeFi's greatest generation.

What is significant about 11/18/2004 that caused the influx?

I was a late adopter at 11/19/04, about a year after my first child was born, and have hazy memories of nursing at the computer as I read the blue. You have no idea how much your words helped me not to lose my mind in my first few years of motherhood. Thank you!

What is significant about 11/18/2004 that caused the influx?

Before that day, new member signups were closed...since 2002? 3? Not sure. Anyway, there were various schemes that let in a trickle of new members here and there, but if you didn't know about them or catch them as they went by, you were SOL. When the new member signups reopened on 11/18, it was the first time anyone could join, and also the first time, I think, that a membership charge applied - the $5 in "$5 n00b."

There were a lot of us who had lurked for a long long time and had been waiting for this chance. It was like winning a lottery. It obviously took me a few days to realize it had happened because I joined on the 21st, but I'd been reading since 2001 so I stampeded in with the rest of the longtime lurkers as soon as it became a possibility.

I seem to remember a friend of mine getting in on an unannounced opening on April 1 of that year or something, and I berated him so fiercely for not cluing me in that, when they finally went live, calling me was the first thing I did, and here I am.

And now I can berate you all, instead. Wheee!

This was almost exactly my experience. It may have actually been the impetus for me starting a paypal account. I think it was, but I'm not sure. As it happened, a friend had just given me a bootleg of part of the Minnesota Hotel tapes for my birthday, and Dylan had been singing me OmieWise for a few days. I'm still not sure why it took me until 11/22 to realize that I could sign up, I had been checking so often, but I must have let myself slip from despair.

Or, if that's too violent, how many could I out drink, because I'm betting at this point I'm a better at putting away booze than I am as a fighter.

And if even that's too much, how about I just invite all of you out to a drink.

In case you didn't already know, I'm The MeFite Formerly Known As Wendell, but when the Big Influx happened I realized I needed to protect this handle, which I was using for the name and URL of my blog, from anybody else using it here. Besides, I felt better giving Matt $5 since I'd gotten in free back in the 'everybody who's got a blog is joining this' day. So when I decided to do the Unwendelling two years ago, I had this to fall back on. So you could call me the Oldest November '04 Noob. Or not.

And I NEVER intended to use it as a 'Sock Puppet'; I paid another $5 for that.

I was 17 years old when I joined MetaFilter on 11/20/04 after reading the site for years. I was still in high school then, and I cared a lot about O. Henry and music. Some things never change, but other things do. MetaFilter was there when I started to feel that maybe politics and IAff weren't really my fields. It was there when I started my post-bacc and when I applied to med school. Five plus years of reading MeFi was on my side when faculty members were interviewing me to see if I was a well-rounded person, and I'll have a decade of being a MeFite under my belt when I have to impress a whole new group of folks for my residency.

All throughout this process, MetaFilter has been a constant, a boon traveling companion, and a great comfort. The community here is full of some of the most thoughtful and helpful people I've never met, and a bunch of lovable rakes and asshats besides. Mods, Folks, non-member lurkers who for some reason get off on reading MeTa: thank you; I can't wait to see what happens next.

Well I've been great for MeFi these past sept ans, and I'm a bit miffed no-one has sent me birthday greetings.

MeMail is only a mouse-click away, people. Think of all the joy that YOU could spread by MeMailing me right now, and saying: "Hey. quidnunc. Yeah. Hey. Thanks for being with us these past seven years. Thanks for loggin' in and checking out the great stuff that seven years of intelligent, well-educated and creative other people have dug up outta the bowels of the internet to deliver, trimmed and polished, to your very eyeballs - without significant cost to you, and just out of the goodness of their hearts and belief in the possibility of an international community of ideas."

I'd no doubt respond: "No problemox, my foxy interlocutox."

Then you could write something like, "Oh - and another thing. Are you free next Thursday night? Maybe we could meet up, have a little dinner, catch a show ... then see what happens. If you get my drift."

I'd wait a day or two to get back to you - don't wanna seem too keen. But then I'd write back and say, "Love to." and then I'd type: "x". And that means: "kiss".

And then, come Thursday, we could totally get it on.

It's the least I can do for all the pleasure you've given me, MetaFilter.

On the other hand, I'm drunk right now - so if you wanna just booty call me that's cool too.

So, I have been reading MetaFilter for ages, well before 9/11. When signups opened, I didn't have a Paypal account, and didn't want to create one, and I totally missed the point at which Paypal started taking credit cards without requiring an account. Jessamyn was kind enough to give me an account after I asked her for one, long past the point I simply could have made one myself.

It's weird, because I think of the 17Kers as having been on MeFi vastly longer than I have, but Sunday is my 5th MeFiversary. I presume that comes with automatic Cabal membership, right? I'm sure you guys will let me know.

Err.. January 4. The day was so un-memorable I cannot remember which day it even was.

I had been lurking for years and missed a previous opening or two. When the $5 re-opening came I figure I may as well grab it and continue lurking while logged in.

Happy anniversary all!

Nobody has brought up the innate superiority of the 14k brigade over all the USD5 newbies yet? Come on comrades, you are getting lazy in your advancing years!

Wow, that timeline was interesting. Another hour or so lost in Metafilter archival space. Thanks screamingnotlaughing.

We are too busy lurking. (which we were doing before it was cool by the way).

I'm not a 7-year n00b. get off my lawn. I am, however, amused to discover that I joined the day before "We have cameras."

For some reason, all this time, eriko, I thought you were a young Japanese lady. I'm sorry.

Metafilter means never having to apologize for mistaking someone for a young Japanese lady.

Two observations:

1. If you've been here for 7 years, it's kind of hard to still consider yourself a n00b. Face it $5 members of '04, you're actually the old guard now.

2. I am not a $5 n00b and never was. I joined back when it was free, thanks to a server glitch that let in a few hundred instead of 20 that fateful day. And to think Matt thought my April 01/02 2004 brethren would be a burden...

from caution live frog's link, a comment a little further down seems optimistic about the future

the sort of user that Matt is looking for—someone that posts good links and not, as he says, somone who just “shoots the shit” in the comments.

Somethingsomething November. I think it was today. [Under my old handle, grapefruitmoon]

I signed up with my at-the-time husband as he was the one who really wanted the account, but I had the credit card. Last year marked the year that my time on MetaFilter had doubled the amount of time that we were married. Now, we've exceeded it by a year.

I don't know how I feel about this. Surely the English language has an adjective for this sort of situation - I just don't know what it is. I don't know what it says that my first marriage lasted three years, but I've been on this website that I just signed up for on a total whim for seven.
