Mefites' Choice 2013 winners, Final Week January 3, 2014 9:57 AM   Subscribe

Thanks for your patience as we do all the complicated calculations to determine the week's three winners as well as the month's twenty-one(ish) overall category winners.

This was a challenging week of fierce competition since many highly scoring posts were by people who had won in previous weeks and some categories didn't have any entries at all. The top three posts from Week Four, Dec 22-31, with prizes from the wiki.

Happy birthday capricorn! She offered a prize for "most fantasticked post on my birthday" That honor goes to reenum for the list-assemblage Best Longform of 2013 (check the thread for some other favorite longform wrap-ups from MeFites). Get started early on populating your instapaper feed with stuff that might get you actually looking at your instapaper feed!

Runner-up prize, offered by Kat Allison goes to JHarris's Happy Zelda Day megapost. Beep Boop! I have now added the phrase "tool-assisted speedrun" to my lexicon.

Thanks to a confluence of fantastic flags and what is probably shameless pandering, the most fantasticked post of the week is also a close runner up for my themed prize of the month: jetlagaddict for Remember, if approached by a librarian, keep still. Do not run away an amazing collection of library tumblrblogs, sure to keep you warm and happy over the coming winter (or excellent beach reading for our antipodal members)

Thanks to the mods for all the hard work on this! It was a lot of fun.

Hooray for everyone! This was fun and apparently a not insignificant amount of work for the mods so thanks mods!

emmtee watch your MeMail and phunniemee I'd like a sketch of Apple as a queen regnant.

Monkeytoes - Pear butter, grapefruit marmalade or loquat jam

One of these things is not like the other.

I've only seen three of these posts (and judge the wins well-deserved, MonkeyToes, griphus, and Soliloquy), so I've got some catching up to do. Congratulations to everyone (particularly the winners, prize-givers, and judges/modly contest enablers) on a great December!

KMZ, I see that you don't have memail enabled. Pop me an email via the mods -- or directly to hello [at] alisonwilgus.com -- at your convenience and I'll mail you your book!

Kitteh, check your memail!

Congrats to all the winners!

Congratulations to all, and especially my favorite mefite, gingerbeer!

I kind of love these contest announcements a lot, because as much time as I spend here, there's always something cool I've missed. Thanks mods and prize-givers, for making this month ever more neat than usual.

Aaaah, that explains it. I was wondering, "I won something? Why? What happened?"

Always check MeTa, me, always check MeTa.

Thank you, Sophie1! Grapefruit marmalade sounds amazing. Very kind of you to offer a prize! Thanks, mods, and thanks organizers and prize-givers; your extra work on this is appreciated.

There is so much good stuff to read, and I am looking forward to catching up with the great posts I missed. Thanks, guys, and congratulations!
posted by MonkeyToes at 11:09 AM on January 3, 2014

Congratulations to Quilford, and thank you to woodblock100 for arranging the prize!
That site about color theory was fascinating, and a great example of a post that just has one really meaty link.

Great posts this month, and as always some difficult choices. Many people who won once had subsequent terrific posts that were ineligible for further prizes -- so a big cheer for those folks for continuing to post great stuff all month.

This contest really has developed into something awesome over the last couple of years. Thanks for the great posts, and also for the place and resources in which to have so much fun. I hope we can keep this up over the years!

Man, these are some really good posts! Makes me wish I had the time to look through every single post on the blue. I had a tough time choosing the winner for my category, and there were only six or so qualifiers!

I'll post in this thread when I have completed gilrain's song.

Brilliant! Superb posts, every one! :) Congratulations to all the winners!

Oh wow!! I was really nervous about delving into the world of FPPs for the first time, especially given the contest, but I'm glad this one was so well-received! (I'm also trying to convince my own library to finally go for a tumblr, so perhaps this body of evidence will sway them...) Thanks to everyone for the awesome posts-- I have learned a lot and that's a great thing.
posted by jetlagaddict at 11:37 AM on January 3, 2014

jetlagaddict, your other two posts were great, too!

The wiki is updated, though there are a few gaps to fill as some TBDs get D'd.

Oh wow, thank you so much! It's been a blah day at work but now I'm all aflutter with warm feels. Email incoming!

Yay! JHarris, I e-mailed the address in your profile page, but if that's not working for whatever reason, let me know via MeMail. Congrats to all winners!

I won! I won! I won!

Okay, I seem to have won a bike bell, which is a little awkward since I don't own a bike, but maybe I can attach it to a cat? Or just carry it around with me and ring it randomly? Put it on my desk and use it to summon underlings (which would work better if I had underlings -- or minions. Is it too late to ask for minions for xmas?)? Either way I will properly cherish it. Thank you!
posted by gingerbeer at 1:42 PM on January 3, 2014

gingerbeer: I seem to have won a bike bell

I think aniola has the option to re-distribute those fair-trade and direct-trade chocolate bars as neither the fairtrade nor directtrade tags were used in December, so you could get something tasty.

best post by someone who joined MetaFilter in calendar 2013: At least Roger Corman didn't have a preoccupation with ping pong balls. by AlonzoMosleyFBI

I like your posts and your user name always makes me happy.
posted by Room 641-A at 2:29 PM on January 3, 2014

gingerbeer:

Thanks for making a post on urban planning!

I can totally send you the bike bell, if you want the bike bell. You can use it to summon your minions, install it on your front door, or even use it as an excuse to get a bicycle.

Alternately, I can send you a fair trade chocolate bar. They're easier for me to wrap. And tastier.

Memail me your mailing address?
posted by aniola at 2:47 PM on January 3, 2014

Can somebody send me some minions? TIA
posted by It's Raining Florence Henderson at 2:48 PM on January 3, 2014 [3 favorites]

Chocolate would definitively be put to very good use, I can promise that. To the memail...
posted by gingerbeer at 2:49 PM on January 3, 2014

We have cats, but they are pretty terrible minions. I'm sure they think the same of us.
posted by rtha at 2:52 PM on January 3, 2014

Extended deadline: If anyone wants to make an awesome post tagged fair trade or direct trade, I will still happily mail you a fair trade chocolate bar. Memail me with the FPP link and your address before I make it to the post office. First person to memail me wins. I'll probably hit the post office some time next week, so call the deadline Monday morning, January 6th.

Wooooo this is a really nice surprise, huge thanks to griphus and also all the makers of great posts, there's so much good stuff here!

I really enjoyed daisyk's post People of Color are Not an Anachronism, but she won for the week earlier on in December. I went with the Sonic Time Machine post because I'm really excited, in general, about web projects that use historic assets in integrated, multimedia ways.

Divabat's perfume post was also a really strong history contender, though more wide in its scope. Another runner-up was A Spectacular Historical Atlas Refashioned for the 21st Century. All of these were interesting finds that went beyond a blog post, showed some of the potential of history projects on the web, and brought something cool about the past to MeFi.

davidjmcgee, I am going to MeMail you with a selection of museum catalogs to choose a prize from - unless you're in the Boston area over the next year, in which case you can get the museum tour too.

I received my prize today, and thanks to the quidnunc kid's generosity I was able to choose a lovely book for myself from The Folio Society as well as a lovely book that I will almost probably gift to a special friend or keep.

I actually started work on the Zelda Day post late, because I was working on a much larger post that I couldn't finish in December. I'm still working on it though, I hope to get it up by the weekend....

And, er, I have to admit that I also asked "What the hell is a geoduck?" Then I looked it up, and I'm greatly relieved that it's not a pokemon.

A geoduck is a hairless yeti that lives under the sand in the PNW.
