The Iain M Banks ship names are hilarious. Some are even a response to critics, or so I have heard. Banks alludes to it in this transcript of a web chat.

This comment in a February thread about using MeTa as a chatroom might be worth reading.

Thanks, mediareport. Reading over that thread reminds me that I miss seeing rcb around here.

So, who do you miss on MetaX?

Och, sorry, reflex.

Shipname signoffs are fun to use for email - on the Culture discussion mailing list, a tradition has grown up of ending each message with a shipname that's somehow related to the subject of your email. It lets you get in a parting shot or a nice summary of what you've said.

Yes, mediareport. This doesn't seem to be a MeTa post. Couldn't resist commenting though.

I'm a big fan of Iain Banks as well. Sorry to go off tangent, but what is the address for the Culture mailing list?

Argyle: You can find the mailing list's website at www.theculture.org and the Culture Data Repository also has information about the list.

However! I have to warn you that it is a rare day indeed that anyone on the list ever mentions Iain Banks. Admittedly, it's happening slightly more often these days because of Dead Air, but even so we don't stay on-topic much. I prefer to put it this way - if you are the type of person who likes reading Banks, chances are that you'll enjoy the list.
