Formatting error in Netscape 4.5 (Feb. 2001) February 5, 2001 8:25 AM   Subscribe

I run at work on a crappy computer with Netscape 4.5 (ewww)and have noticed recently that when I preview a comment of mine, not only is there no editing text below the preview (it was like that before), but now when I hit "back" it loses what I typed. To make it suck even more, I copy my previous text from the preview and paste it in the text box and it is unformatted and I have to go fix spaces and line breaks. What gives?

I haven't changed anything recently, but I'll see what I can do. Everything seems fine in NN 4.7. Is it possible for you to take a screenshot of what you're seeing?

Uhhh, I'm about as computer illiterate as a blogger gets. How does one do that?

norm: Mac or PC?

Mac: cloverleaf-shift-3 (the .pict file goes the bottom level of your main drive; better if you can convert it into another format).

PC: Press the "PrtScn/SysRq" button on the top right of the keyboard (if you have one) and then paste (ctrl-V) into a graphics program. Um, if you have one.

Or just draw a picture and FedEx it ...

Norm: What Sylloge said.
Sylloge: I named my current D&D character after you, and you keep fumbling your saving throws. If you don't shape up you will end up like the recently fallen Mars Saxman (3rd level Ranger).

DoublePostGuy, we hardly knew ye.

I posted a bug against this this morning (NS4.76 on both W98 and RH6.2)... and tried to correct a typo, and backed up, and it ate the posting. :-{

I've got a similar situation to Norm -- a 486 at work, running IE 4.0. I can preview and spellcheck comments, but no matter how hard I try, I can't submit them. If I really have something I want to say, I have to email my comments to myself & add them when I get home. But I don't think this is anything new. I think this is an ongoing feature of my crappy computer.

ok, I'll get rid of the "wait" thingy.

No, it wasn't the wait thing that was doing it; that went in a week ago, it only broke this weekend.

That's funny; I have the little key thingie, but it has occurred to me that I don't have a graphics program. Ha! I'll just draw a picture and fedex it.

(thirteen: fantastic idea with the D&D names. I always have trouble coming up with them myself; I've in the past resorted to names from Ayn Rand novels. There's a whole empire out there populated with Taggarts.)

Roark the Paladin... Hrm. I like it.

Beware the wrath of John Gault, 23rd-level monk! Look upon his works, ye mighty, and despair!

Umm.

Norm, I believe you can paste it into Microsoft Word, if it comes to that.

(And I want a DoublePostGuy bio! How did DoublePostGuy get his name? When did he first realize that the internet wasn't just for freaks?)

Thirteen: blow on the dice first. That's what I do, and you should see my collection of new shoes!

It'd be nice to have an all out battle of the MetaFilter usernames (battlebot style). I should really update my profile ...

Back to norm's original question: the same thing happens to me, using the godforsaken version 4.08 of Netscape for the Mac. Here's a quick crappy GIF screenshot.

Oddly enough, it doesn't happen in iCab. (Though it displays the sideblog stuff at the top of the page...and Netscape doesn't display it at all. Hmm.)
