New feeds for AskMe? (More Inside)
posted by dflemingdotorg to Feature Requests at 7:34 AM (6 comments total)

I got to thinking the other day about how many times a question has been asked multiple times on AskMe and wondered why it was that this was happening. I figured it had nothing to do with an inability to use the search function, but rather 2 other criteria:

1)Everyone thinks their question is unique in some way and a generic answer is something they can find via Google. They come to AskMe for the personality of the answer.

or, more likely:

2)The poser of the question most likely has several follow-up questions that might not have been covered by the original thread.

So, I was wondering if there might be any way to create an RSS feed of all the questions posed/commented on by a particular user (so I can get notification that a thread I posted/commented on has been commented on again, say, 10 days from now rather than having to bookmark it), so that users can feel comfortable that a question that falls off the front page might still be replied to by someone who knows something about the topic. As it stands, once it leaves the front page, very few threads continue on and so posting new questions to it will most likely go unread.

Is this feasible or planned in the near future?

There's so much wrong with AskMe it's easy sometimes to forget how awesome it is.

Apparently Matt is caught between not having the time to work on it on the one hand, and not wanting to feel indebted to users who might otherwise help out, on the other.

He should ask AskMe for help with resolving this existential dilemma. That would be pretty meta.

I agree there is a lot more we could do with Ask MetaFilter, it really has the potential to eclipse almost anything else here and become a standalone, kickass resource.

I'm working on a huge project at work that will be launch in three weeks from today. I assure you I'll start major ask mefi hacking soon after, and we'll get categories, keywords, noted answers, and all the other things I've had on the to do list for ages.
