Hands of Manos' profile page is pretty freaking amazing February 9, 2005 4:35 PM   Subscribe

While, it'd be nice if you could still see his comments, links, and previous posts, Hands of Manos' profile page is pretty freaking amazing, especially considering the limitations of the space.

Wow, that is decidedly excellent. Ten points to HoM.

VERY NICE. Hands (can I call you Hands?), that's absolutely splendiferous. And you're right, you do draw good.

I was going to post this earlier when I tried to add him, but didn't want to call it out in case it started a shit storm or something.

You know we love our shit storms...

Anyways, his userpage and his art totally own.

I totally agree. Awsome art, Hands. And you can cheat your way into viewing his comments by substituting the user number from another user's page. Like mine, which is boring.

In the little drawing designating gender, he seems to be wearing well-stuffed ballet leotards.

Very eyecatching, very fun.

Very original and attractive. Where are your comment histories, mate?

This remindes me, what is the policy on posting stuff by users to Mefi? There's a lot of good stuff like HoM's site that I've found from browsing profiles, can I go ahead and make an FPP on those sites?

I should think so, spaghetti. I've seen people post other MeFites' stuff before.

I guess he took that info from his AskMe post about how to modify the profile page and put it to good use. Nice design, but it sure would be nice to have a direct link into the posting history.

Incredible. I wouldn't have even thought it possible.

Hey, actually I guess I could add back the comments, right? If anyone of you are CSS gods, let me know how to re-implement them as I'd like to put them back into there to (so I can go back and re-read my comments)

Better even than the user page is the artwork over at the HoM site - GREAT stuff, Manos! Amusingly enough, I wanted to read the AxeMe thread where you learned how to do this, but I can't find it, because I can't easily pour through your comment history.
posted by jonson at 8:48 PM on February 9, 2005

Yeah, since I've already sort of made an appearance in this thread, I would like to say that that is the coolest user page I've seen. I would, however, like people to include their comment histories if possible, even if it's shoved way at the bottom. But most people probably don't mind, so, you know, take it with a grain of salt.

Hands- like I said before, the URL to your MeTa comments page is: http://www.metafilter.com/search_comments.cfm?user_ID=17747,
MeTa posts is: http://www.metafilter.com/search_posts.cfm?user_ID=17747,
MeTa posts: http://metatalk.metafilter.com/search_threads.mefi?user_ID=17747,

AskMeFi questions: http://ask.metafilter.com/search_threads.mefi?user_ID=17747
and AskMeFi answers: http://ask.metafilter.com/search_comments.mefi?user_ID=17747.

Or something. Sorry if the links are broke. It was pretty meta meta meat team. Tired.

Hands, would you be intrested in drawing tshirts for sinfulshirts.com for $100 a pop? It's run by a friend of mine, and he's always bitching about not being able to find good artists.

HoM - if you asked #1 nicely, it would be pretty easy to alter the profile page so that you could pick and choose the things you showed using CSS.
Now would be a good time time for redesign ponies, I think.

View-->Source is your friend. You're on your own after that.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 5:06 AM on February 10, 2005

In the "blurb about you" you can use the "style" tag to redefine the styles used on the profile page. Doing so would allow you to change colors, add a background image, etc. What Manos has done, however, is to turn off the display of every element in the page and then substituting his own html. In his case, an image and an imagemap. The various profile-type information you see is not generated by metafilter or are the values entered in the customize page, but are hard-coded (in this case, imaged) re-creations of the same information.

hey thanks again everyone, once I get a few things knocked out today I'll look into putting some form of comment history in.

Delmoi, I tried to email you however it did not go through.

"...I'll look into putting some form of comment history in."

Manos: you might just add appropriate elements to your graphic and use the links Bdave provided in your imagemap.

View-->Source is your friend.

Yeah, I tried that first but couldn't make much sense of it. EB's explanation makes it a bit clearer.

It was deleted. I just assumed Matt deleted it because he did not want to encourage this sort of thing and then look who threw HOM the first compliment.

"EB, the red on your page, it bleeds! Intentional?"

Yeah, testing to discover a selector that finds that section. And I found one.

Hands of Manos, add this to your profile:
.monthday + * + * { font-size: 8pt; color:black; display:block; position:absolute; text-align:center; left:28%; top:900px }
...and see what you think. The method of positioning is kinda stupid; refinements welcome.

It was deleted. I just assumed Matt deleted it because he did not want to encourage this sort of thing. . .

We should have pressed for an explanation as to why the AxMe thread was deleted. If the purpose of AxMe is sharing knowledge that was an appropriate question and I found the replies helpful. After it was deleted I emailed one of the members who posted to the MeTa thread about it and that member was kind enough to send me a number of CSS resources.

It was MetaTalk related and therefore in violation of AskMefi's guidelines. I believe it was Meta'd as to why.

Yes, the guidelines are enforced per matt's whim.

I added it, but when I play with the settings it totally screws it up. So I'll leave it way down there and people can visit what I've so intelligently commented on (/sarcasm)

thanks EB!

You're welcome. Note that that positioning should work well with regard to the image; but if the browser renders the text of the two links you've included differently than you and I are seeing, it'll be wonked.

I'm very not happy with the positioning method, but I'm pleased to discover what seems to me to be a sort of selector kludge that finds that section.

I like how that profile just says "Meta" in the upper left corner now, instead of "MetaFilter." Yes, it's very meta.

Nope, it was deleted because we already have a place to ask questions and share knowledge about metafitler on MetaTalk. I wanted Ask MetaFilter to be free of MetaFilter related queries, so that it was truly general knowledge.
