MetaFilter has a Mall!

Do you have a thing to sell? Do you want to buy some things from other MeFites? There is a Mall. It's a little homemade, but it's here and it's available for you to put a link or links to things you have for sale. If you had a shop in the mall previously, it's still there (we usually take it down for a reboot after holidays but didn't this year). Here is the link to submit your new shop. If you need to edit/delete a shop, drop us a note at the Contact Form. [more inside]

Metatalktail Hour: My dream job...

If I were to have my dream job, it would probably be a combination of writing Wikipedia articles about notable and under-appreciated people (librarians, artists, historical POC) and being the "Live Zoom link provider" person when I was watching a lecture or attending an event. "Oh hey that person mentioned their book, here's a link where you can read a review or purchase it from a non-Amazon shop." It would be great if that kind of thing paid. What sort of dream job would you like, if you're dreaming? Sky is the limit. Thank you to valkane for the suggestion. [more inside]

Turkey Day 2020

As has been usual for the past several years, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is running an internet-streamed collection of episodes for US Thanksgiving, which they call Turkey Day. It will be showing in many places. And as usual, MST Club (if it turns out we can embed the stream in our video room), will be watching along, and everyone is invited to watch too, in our little chat room environment isolated from the general internet hubbub. Everything starts at 9 AM Eastern time and runs all day long. It might be a nice thing to watch, especially if you are having a light Thanksgiving this year. [more inside]

Metatalktail Hour: I could really go for...

It's the weekend, Mefites! It's cold where I am, and I could really go for a hot homemade cinnamon roll. Not that I'm going to make one or anything... Do you have a food daydream? [more inside]

A Thanksgiving Day Python Screenplay Party?

I’ve mumbled before about doing a funny online screenplay reading salon, and there seemed to have been some interest. What I have not tried to do before is organize it on a holiday! [more inside]

Help me remember a post on the blue about an academic/journalism "cult"?

I remember reading a post on MetaFilter at least 4 years ago that was about a weird network of interconnected organizations that were ostensibly about journalism, history, ethics, etc. but were actually some sort of cult. Many similarities to NXIVM but possibly something else. [more inside]

MetaTalktail Hour: Stories of courage and comfort

This week's prompt comes from MonkeyToes: Huron Bob's stories were so often humane and comforting. In his memory, let's have a story MetaTalk? One where we tell a story about something encouraging that's stuck with us over the years, or about someone telling us just the right and comforting thing at a difficult moment, or something to give courage and comfort? This is not meant as a minimizing everyone-must-be-happy way... but it might be a good time to share stories that sustain us. [more inside]

MetaFilter Gift Swap 2020 THANK YOU!

I just want to kick the thread off and thank my (seemingly anonymous) gifter for their awesome FRAMED Watership Down triptych. Your generosity, thoughtfulness, and creativity have me overwhelmed. I can't wait to hang it up in my new home. I hope that everyone is as touched by their gift and enjoy theirs as much as I do mine. This secret gift exchange always reminds me how lovely and generous we are to each other here on Metafilter. Wishing you all the happiest days ahead!

national clean your home month

this year has been and continues to be bad! I invite you to invest a little time in your home and mental wellbeing by participating in this November challenge. From the NaClYoHoMo manifesto: But before you start feeling stressed about the idea of cleaning your home, let's be clear: the goal of NaClYoHo is not actually to end up with a clean home. The goal of NaClYoHo is to spend time each day addressing something you’d like to change about your living space. [more inside]
