Metatalktail Hour: How auld is your lang syne?

Happy weekend, dear friends, and happy brand new year! 🎉 As we put our old acquaintance, 2022, in the rear view mirror (with perhaps some measure of relief), I'd like to ask about your traditions for celebrating the new year holiday, whenever you celebrate it. Any special foods, games, customs, rituals? What will you be doing, if anything special, to mark the transition? [more inside]

The battle is lost

Trying to find an old comment, possibly about a contentious grammar/usage issue ("irregardless" type thing but likely not "irregardless") where one user was consoling another in slightly archaic military shadings: "I agree with you, we were right, but the battle is lost, comrade. Spike the cannons and retreat" [more inside]

MST Club New Years Eve

Usually each year, as a kind of follow up to all the CHRISTMAS MADNESS, we do a New Year's Eve thing. This year, we plan to do it mostly with shorts, with some countdowns and other minor things mixed in! Nothing long, just things like a half hour or less. We usually do a countdown for each US timezone! And, as also usual for us, it's in our video share room. We plan to start a few hours before midnight Eastern Time.

What are your today traditions?

Even for people who do not celebrate Christmas, December 25th can be a bit of an odd day because a lot of places are closed, there's a sameness to the social media shares, and the internet gets ever so slightly quieter. Whether you celebrate or not, what are some things that you traditionally do today? Or just what are you up to?

Metatalktail Hour: I can call you Betty

Happy weekend and happy holidays, friends! For this week's Metatalktail hour, theora55 says, "The dog name post makes me want to know MeFite's nicknames for pets, pet names for friends and SOs, kids, monikers of nemeses, etc." [more inside]

Holiday Greetings/Check-in from the Polar Vortex

For those of us in the North American region, there is a massive storm that's been moving across the continent, dropping snow, rain, high winds, arctic air and general horrible conditions. Sending warm thoughts and prayers for safe travels (or hibernation) to all during this holiday season. Please let us know how you are doing in your corner of the world.

Appreciate your MeFi Holiday Cards here!

This is your MeFi Holiday Card Exchange appreciation thread! I have received my most awesome cards ever and am feeling like I definitely need to up my card exchange game next year! ALL cards have been lovely but I especially want to thank whoever sent my dog the brilliant little crinkly dog toy and the person who sent the rainbow solstice window cling thingy. In typical fashion I mislaid the envelopes, but THANK YOU! <3

9th Annual MST Club Xmas Video Marathon

Going from the early morning on December 23rd (going by US Eastern time) and going to midnight December 25th and usually a bit beyond, three solid days of riffing, weird movies and Christmas specials! It all takes place in MST Club's video share room. See inside for details! [more inside]

Easy reader

Over the years, there have been many posts to Ask Metafilter about page-turners, books with momentum, propulsive books, engaging reads, books you can't put down. Basically, books that keep you coming back to the book instead of getting distracted by your phone or whatnot. Can you help me find those questions, in hopes of assembling a sort of meta AskMe recommendation of these books? [more inside]

The Ongoing Modern Pen Pal Project

Since the beginning of 2020, I've been doing a project where I write a handwritten letter a week to friends, acquaintances, and family members on a topic of their choosing and have sent out over 150 letters since starting. About 18 months ago, I posted here in MetaTalk, asking for participants -- and you folks delivered! From that initial participation, I've started some lovely longer-term correspondences, and have sent out one-time thoughts on everything from death to the history of my area to books to food. My list has dwindled and I could use some new participants! [more inside]

what's the word for when you know this was on metafilter

What's it called when you sing along with the instrumentals? This was a question on Ask within probably the last 5 years, and I recall it was answered almost immediately. Yes I would like to know the word, but I'm also a little miffed that googling for it didn't immediately bring up the green, and I would also like to see how badly I'm remembering the post.

Pony Request for FanFare

One FanFare feature I've asked for in the past is the ability to bump older posts back to the top of the timeline. We could do this based on films coming to streaming, being re-released, getting a sequel, etc. While I am requesting that again, today's pony is a new pony, as I have figured out a possible logical way to do that... MetaFilter Fundraiser Auction - How it went and what we're planning

The MetaFilter Auction has ended - but it’ll be back soon! Thank you to everyone who contributed items, and everyone who placed bids. It raised around $5,740 for the 2022 MetaFilter Fundraiser (approximate because some generous Mefites overpaid for their items). It was the first time we've tried something like this, so we’re delighted at the community response, and we’re planning another round in the new year. [more inside]

189: Snowperson Trauma

Cortex and I decided to make up for lost time after the delayed previous episode by knocking out another one quick-like, and here it is! Catching up on what we can of the last couple of months of MeFi, and also ranting and philosophizing a little bit about recent seismic changes in the social media sphere and also about design skeuomorphism and the semiotics of interfaces? That last bit is probably overselling it a little? Anyway, runs about 90 minutes. [more inside]

Metatalktail Hour: Intruders Detected

Your media of 2022

What did you play this year? What did you watch? What did you read? None of it has to be the greatest ever, or even anything that came out in 2022, I'd just like to hear about what you spent time with and what it meant to you.

Posting for December: Advent2022 tag

I'm committing to post an FPP every day from Dec 1 to Dec 24 for Metafilter - seeing more activity and diversity on the blue is a direct action to boost Metafilter for our current and future users. Please join in and tag away with #Advent2022! I apologise in advance for using a tag which has religious elements but the Advent concept of a countdown with a gift every day seemed ideal, and I didn't want to commit to posting during my actual Christmas days which are usually packed (or devoted to post-food coma). Happy to change to alternatives that fit proposed below.
