February 2020 Archives (all archives)
During the last soccer / football world cup there was a small series of niche articles in various publications about the intersection of the adoration of footballers and discrimination of immigrants in the soccer nations of Europe. I want to find one article about a specific English team member who's sister took the bus with him several nights a week to get him to training in London club's youth section. [more inside]
That’s it. Something that happens once every four years deserves some recognition!
For today's Metatalktail Hour topic, we want to know what's the secret in your secret sauce? Do you have a special dish with a top-secret ingredient that puts it over the top? Tell, tell, tell! [more inside]
End of another long week, let's carve out a space to talk about something other than politics for those that need that space. 2020 is a leap year, which means we all get an extra day, and this year, for the first time in almost 30 years, 29 February falls on a Saturday (tomorrow). Let's open up this space to talk about leap years, leap days, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings. Basically anything related to numbers and dates in general. Were you born on a leap year/day? If so, how do you celebrate? Or maybe you were married on a leap day? I'm sure that makes for some interesting anniversary celebrations. Whether its you or your friends or family members, let's talk about the days, weeks, months, the calendar. As always, remember to be kind to yourself and to others.
Conspiracy theories: please stop. Between coronavirus and the primaries the conspiracy theories have been ranging far and wide. Before writing up that comment with the latest conspiracy you found on Twitter, please get some evidence of it besides Random Twitter Person or WhackadoodleNews.net. If said evidence does not exist, maybe sit on the comment until something manifests from a reasonable news source. If your argument for posting without evidence is that said evidence will not manifest because The Man is suppressing it . . . well, maybe your comment would work better as a rant on Medium or Twitter. It is really tempting to post things that confirm our existing biases but c'mon, a little skepticism and basic media literacy in this day and age never hurt anyone.
Apparently it's Scorpion - Scorpion - Scorpion - Crop Is On day on MetaFilter, so, y'know, post some fucken scorpions if you got 'em.
Happy weekend, Mefites! This weekend, jacquilynne wondered what games people are enjoying on Android phones lately. I'm also wondering what other kinds of games you've all been into -- boardgames, cardgames, rpg's, console or pc games. Even physical games you play with your actual body, if that's how you roll. Today is my 20th anniversary of joining Metafilter, and I just wanted to say: you're all flagged as fantastic! [more inside]
I want to gush about Animal Crossing: New Horizons but I'm not sure a link to the direct would be a good post. Any news about adding Video Games to Fanfare?
Fizz and I often joke about how random or out-of-context phrases or clauses that we either say or overhear in conversation would "make a great Metafilter username." Since we almost never bother to write them down, we've forgotten many of our favorites. Now that we plan to start writing them down, we thought we'd have some fun and put the question out to the community: what random phrases or expressions have you said or overheard that you think would make a great Metafilter username? (Fun bonus question: what out-of-context Metafilter comment snippets do you think would make great Metafilter usernames?) [more inside]
Whether you celebrate St. Valentine's Day or not, let's make this a space to send love to one another. That includes yourself, your partner, your family, your lover, your neighbor, anyone and everyone, we are all worthy of love and kindness. Feel free to share how you're celebrating or not celebrating. Also, a reminder that chocolate is going to be super cheap and on sale tomorrow. Happy St. Valentine's Day!
What is the metafilter opinion on sharing links to material that might be infringing copyright? For example, https://readcomiconline.to/ They have the complete Maus, and several books by Will Eisner among others that I'm pretty sure they don't have the rights to. Am I right about that? I can't see anything on the site that suggests the DO have the rights. I'd love to create a metafilter post sharing these, but it seems wrong, since this is essentially a pirate site, as far as I can tell?
It's a request. I have never been on Twitter, and don't plan to be. So when there's a comment on the blue that consists only of a link to a tweet, I can't read it. I just see a picture of a bird. This is frustrating, especially when I don't bother to over-hover the link to identify it as a tweet. My understanding is that tweets are limited to a small number of characters. If there isn't some Twitter mechanism blocking the copying of content, could you please paste that content into the comment? TIA
We were asked for a status update on consulting, and I'll cover a few other things too. Briefly: Consulting/training for the mods on anti-racism/anti-oppression is still in process; hopeful to have an update soon. Changes to moderation practice based on last summer's discussions and the new Community Guidelines are in place and continue to be refined. Our restless_nomad will be officially retired as of next week, and jessamyn will be filling in for some shifts in the coming weeks. The hiring process continues, and the first deadline is this weekend so please apply or refer a friend if you've been putting it off! [more inside]
This weekend, Tehhund wants to hear about mixups and cases of mistaken identity. Has anyone ever mistaken you for someone else, or vice versa? Or maybe your email address or username got confused with someone else's so you got messages intended for them? What happened? [more inside]
Like Frodo and Sam enduring the travails of Mordor, Jessamyn and I have managed somehow to surmount the difficulties of the world to produce a podcast episode this month. Instead of getting a finger bit off we just lost some of our usual running time, so this is a lembas-thin 56 minutes. Also just to be clear there is literally no discussion of Tolkeinian mythology in this episode, I'm just punchy on a Friday night and you're getting whatever comes out of the keyboard at this point. Elevensies. [more inside]
I just wanted to note the fact there are two really good disability-threads on the front page, and I am here for it! I was pleasantly reminded of the #poctakeover, and while I'm not sure there is similar intent behind the disability posts, I just wanted to say I'm one happy wheelchair user this afternoon.
The week is just starting and I'm already feeling a bit overwhelmed. Let's talk about something unrelated to politics. Share something happy with the community, anything at all. Maybe you had the opportunity to pet/play with a puppy. Or it could be the tasty grilled-cheese sandwich you ate for lunch. Whatever it is, share a bit of your happy with the rest of the community. As always, be kind to yourself and to others.
It's been Fun, it's been Fabulous, it's been Fascinating, and, of course it's been Fantastic, but now it's also Final: the Best Post as formally voted by the Fellows of the Metafilter Academy follows ... [more inside]
That's all I got! It’s a palindromic date today, and that’s nuts. Savor it!
Hello weekend Mefites! This week for Metatalktails, I'm thinking about plants. Plants are pretty great. Do you have any recent plants in your life, or memorable plant facts/stories? [more inside]
