Site Update

Following up on some concerns raised in MetaTalk threads from a few weeks ago about the role of the Steering Committee and having volunteers working for a for-profit company. This is not the outcome we were hoping for, but it's the one we got. [more inside]

🔊🌐 🔊 MetaFilter Events: How it went in 2022, plus 2 standalone events

MetaFilter Events is back for a while to bring you two free standalone events featuring two significant figures from the Web’s early days: Ryan North (webcomic creator, known for his work with Dinosaur Comics and Marvel Comics), and Drew Curtis (founder of Fark). Take a break from your work week, and come reminisce and revisit the early days of the Internet. Join us as we ask some early Web movers and shakers about their experiences, how they made what they did, how they rose to prominence, what they’re doing now, and where the Web is going from here. Metatalktail Hour: Well, obviously

Hello, everyone, happy weekend! And speaking of weekends (graceful segue), reading a recent paper NYT Style Magazine (international edition), I ran into the jauntily confident statement, "The 1970s were, of course, a golden age of lounging." Which I did not know. Not only did I not know there was a golden age of lounging, I don't even know what hallmarks would signify a golden age of lounging. I wonder what other golden ages I might be missing? Or just generally, apparently obvious things. [more inside]

Would more youtube content be appreciated? Discuss

I love learning cool new stuff. I find all sorts of cool stuff on Youtube, spotify, Nebula, and podcasts that I'd like to share. And, it's hard to find, and I wish you all shared more cool audio and video content as well. I thought we could talk about how cool it is to post more cool content. Along with this is a question about the place for subscription-based or paywall audio/video content as well. [more inside]

Too Many Links

This post is a revised version of a comment I posted a little while ago on this post on the blue by kliuless. My complaint was that the post was really more of a linkdump than a coherent post. It's not the first time kliuless has done this, but I'm not singling them out -- I'm pretty sure I've seen other users do the same thing. [more inside]

Iso post about a costume designer who found her dress for sale

I'm looking for a post about a woman who designed historical costumes. She designed and made a beautiful dress to her own measures and blogged about it. Then she found the dress for sale WITH A PICTURE OF HER WEARING THE DRESS. She ordered the dress and they sent her a piece of crap. I believe there youtube videos.

Metatalktail Hour: the clouds and the stars to read

Happy weekend, friends. This week I'm dreaming and remembering about ... sleeping. Dreaming of this berth and this pull down blind, rocking away in a sleeping car, or in a cabin on the sea, rolled by the swell of waves and the water's lullaby. So for today's metatalktails, we have this bottle of German wine to drink and I have to ask you: Better sleeping on a train, or sleeping on a ship / boat? [more inside]

A Memorial Day

About a week ago I was reading FPP 'X', and it made me think about a specific user whose input I would have appreciated, and whose comments in the past had helped shape, for the better, how I understand the world. The user in question died a couple years ago though, so that was that, but it put me on a path of thinking about them and - not to be morbid but, well - death. [more inside]

Metatalktail Hour: Fine Print

Happy weekend everyone, I hope you are well! For this metalktail hour topic, I'd like to ask what you are reading, or what you last read, or what you are looking forward to reading ... and also, actually, um, are you reading? Or has the combination of the always-on instant news cycle, ballooning world crises, and overbearing social media interrupted, slowed, or stymied your flow? Or intensified it? [more inside]

Will Musk's defense of Scott Adams make you leave?

As surely most MeFites know by now, Dilbert guy Scott Adams self-immolated via racist screed, and Elon Musk leapt to his defense tweeting, among other things, that "the media is racist against whites." My question for the Twitter users among us: has this made you leave Twitter, or at least consider doing so for good? [more inside]

192: The week between last week and this week

A nerdy debate about the relative term "this week" and "last week" and that mystery week in between them. We got together on March 4th and tried not to talk about the weather too much. Runs about 105 minutes. [more inside]

March is Steering Committee election season

After an initial six-month period marked by a successful fundraiser, volunteer projects, and the start of a long process of establishing important tools and processes for the operation of the site, the MetaFilter Steering Committee (SC) is launching a second round of elections to replace departing members and help us continue our efforts to improve MeFi. Can you build on the progress made addressing the site's urgent needs, partner with diverse stakeholders from the membership, admin, and others, and coordinate with a committed group of volunteers to set MetaFilter's direction? Do you have relevant expertise, a desire to give back to this community, and the time and capacity to put its ideas into action? If so, we want you! Self-nominations will be open from March 1st through midnight Pacific Time on the 15th, with a voting period to follow. Check inside for details! [more inside]
