Cheerwine has passed away.
Looking for an old post about a flipped house
I remember reading a post here about a guy who had bought a house that turned out to have been flipped by someone incredibly shady, and the house was full of stuff like vents leading to nowhere, architectural details secretly supported with popsicle sticks, etc. He and his friends then documented the process of making the house livable. I'm having trouble finding it.

Sidebar! Sidebar!
I have noticed the most excellent regular updates to the front page sidebar (and bestof subsite) and just wanted to say GREAT JOB! Those posts really help me better enjoy all the cool stuff on MeFi that I might otherwise be missing. Thank you so much for keeping that thing full of fun new tidbits to read. It's like the best of the best of the web!
Comment truncation in Recent Activity
Can I run this pony up a flagpole and see if anyone salutes? Would it be possible to not truncate long comments on the Recent Activity page? It would be nice to be able to read the entire comment without having to click over into the thread.

Seeking annual sandwich listing
I'm trying to round up a link I'm pretty sure I saw here. It was a list of sandwich recipes, one per year, going back at least several decades if not more (and inadvertently illustrating some now-obsolete food trends — e.g. english-muffin-based sandwiches were A Thing in the 70s or 80s). My recollection is that the sandwiches on the list were winners of a national contest that was held annually for some time. Googling is finding lots of clickbait-y IF YOUR STATE WAS A SANDWICH WHAT SANDWICH WOULD IT BE? / SEVENTY-TWELVE HIPSTER SANDWICHES YOU MUST EAT BEFORE YOU DIE lists, but not the retro contest-winning sandwich listing I remember. Am I crazy or did this thing really exist?

Metafilter Fantasy Football Challenge 2015/2016
The Stars Are Right Again! Liverpool have spent like their pockets are on fire, Manchester City have devoured any player with a hint of English ancestry, Aston Villa's janitor has refused a new three year contract, and Arsenal is preparing for their yearly Wegner Out campaign so it must mean the new season of the Premier League is upon us! Join your fellow Mefites as we scramble for fantasy football dominance. You can sign up at the official site, create a team, and join the league. This year, we have the Classic League (code: 370477-97125) and the head-to-head Metafilter Cup (code: 370477-97129) running. Old gaffers and fresh prospects welcome! [more inside]

Cake and ice cream for everyone! Except the dogs.
Today is my Metafilter account's 10th birthday! To celebrate, here is a photo from before I joined the site of a puppy sitting on a laptop which is displaying Ask Metafilter. To illustrate how long it's been, here is that puppy's fully grown son. [more inside]

MyFanFare RSS feed?
I do a lot of my MeFi browsing through an RSS reader (NewsBlur if anybody cares). One page I cannot find an RSS feed for is MyFanFare, which is a great thing that could be made better IMO if it came in the shape of an RSS feed. Is there a pony frolicking in the fields nearby MeFi HQ that could fulfill this need? Are there others out there who also feel this pony would make a good addition to the MeFi stables?
Postprandial? Projectionist? Prost?
Non-garbage!
In an interview discussing how the Internet is largely garbage (which is what her new book is about), Sarah Jeong mentions MetaFilter in passing as a curious exception.
Metafilter is an unusually good online community, for many, many reasons, including robust moderation and a $5 sign-up fee. For obvious reasons, most platforms can’t just become Metafilter. Social media platforms are really struggling with these problems right now, and are resorting to some tactics that I criticize in the book as either unethical or doomed to fail.

How I did hair! or, Boy I Sure Put That Off
a) A year minus a day ago (!), I asked for haircut help. I said I'd report back, and so here I am!
b) It's been so long that I felt bizarrely guilty about asking other questions later when I still hadn't taken the advice from the hair Ask! Have you posted to AskMe and then procrastinated forever about acting on the advice? Please tell me it's not just me. [more inside]

Out of the Blue, episode #1: The Snail That Wouldn’t Die
In 1846, a dead snail was glued to a specimen card in the British Museum. In 1850, somebody realized that the snail…wasn’t so dead after all, kicking off a curious story of molluskular stoicism that charmed the mid 19th C. science-and-nature circuit. But what went on in the ensuing 150 years? Site user "nicebookrack" wanted to know, and posted question to Ask MetaFilter asking, well, whatever happened to the snail that wouldn’t die? [more inside]
Two hundred tiny tweets?
The formatting of the story in the How I Quit Spin post drives me up the wall, and I propose that we should avoid linking to stories formatted that way on Metafilter. [more inside]

A thread for Bandcamp Fan Pages
If you buy music on Bandcamp and have made your fan page public, what is it? (Mine is Mister Meows, but lives at runciblejones because such things can't be changed.) The MetaFilter CD swaps have demonstrated that many MeFites are into music that's up my ally, and it'd be cool to see what folks are grooving to on a more regular basis.
Fanfare: Previous/Next Episode Link?
I've really been enjoying Fanfare posts and the ensuing discussions with serialized shows like True Detective and Fringe. I'd like to have a link that goes back to the last episode's discussion thread. [more inside]

Emotional [Labor] Rescue
I just wanted to call out as fabulous this thread on the concept of emotional labor. It shifted something in the way I see the world and made obvious so many things I noticed every day but thought of as disconnected. There are so many fascinating, honest, brutal, mind-altering stories in that thread; it is worth anyone's time to read it, even if you think you might not be interested. [more inside]

We're adding a soft warning for long above-the-fold text on the blue
We’re adding a heads-up note to the posting process on the front page when previewing a long-above-the-fold post, to help provide folks with preemptive feedback about post length. It’s not enforced—your post won’t be truncated by the posting process or anything like that—but we’re hoping it’ll help folks think about how they’re framing stuff in terms of how much vertical space it might occupy. help finding an artist posted to Mefi
Hi, the FAQ says ask here.
I somehow failed to favorite or save off an artist featured in a Mefi post within the past 8 months.
She's an illustrator for a newspaper in the desert states, like maybe Arizona or vicinity.
Her work is ink and washes? Or ink and watercolor?
Her work features bound female figures bleeding from arrows. Bunnies and birds flying about. Pain of love. Thanks!
Why not have two Greek posts?
I don't think it's right that my post on a particular aspect of the Greek debt crisis was deleted just because a more general thread was still active. Considering we can have multiple superhero/sf movie trailer posts active that thread similar ground to each other, not to mention multiple posts about arguably smaller US political stories, it feels a bit as if foreign stories are not allowed as much attention. I'd understand if it was just a question of not wanting to split mod attention over possibly fractious posts, but not that there can only be one post perse on such an important & interesting subject. It reinforces the idea that MeFi is US centric and the rest of us are just here on sufferance.

Are the 'deleted' blogs defunct?
The (as far as I know, unofficial) blogs for deleted MetaFilter posts and deleted AskMetafilter posts do not seem to get updated lately. Is something broken, or is something else going on? Does anyone know?

Membership uptick thanks to R*****'s troubles?
Have the recent troubles at another social media site led to an uptick in our own membership as folks ragequit / rageadd other sites to their browsing experience? Have folks been welcoming new members? What do the new members think about the site? Have they learned to avoid the searing light of the professional white background?

Pony Request: Email Notifications for Anon Questions?
When I submit an anonymous AskMe question, it would be great to have some way to track it. I've had situations where I've thought a question was removed from the queue because I missed it on the front page of the Green, or where I have gone back and tried to find a past anon question of mine and not had an easy way to locate it. An email notification when it gets posted would help me solve these problems. Is there any reason I haven't thought of why this wouldn't work, or would be a bad idea?
MetaFilter does vampires fairly well for the most part, I think
Given that MetaTalk posts are generally reserved for when things go not-well, I just want to say that the recent Real-Life Vampires post is -- to my eyes -- a great example of people with in some cases strongly opposing views having an open, respectful, and interesting conversation. [more inside]

Are unicode image topic lines really such a good idea? Noticed a couple posts recently that would certainly be worth searching/reviewing at a later date with just an image for a post title. Well I just noticed that the later example was "fixed" but was that mod intervention?

Comment about dynamics in toxic friend circles
I saw an Ask Metafilter comment a couple months ago (it may or may or not have been recent) that perfectly described the dynamics of a certain type of toxic friend circle. Unfortunately, I was not logged in, and didn't favorite, and my Google skills are failing me. [more inside]
106: I Cleaned Out The Bathroom Closet
It's episode 106 of the Metafilter podcast, with me and jessamyn and mathowie. We talk about interesting stuff on the site from June 3 through June 30, and chatter a bit about my summer in Huntsville, the problem of putting doing anything off because you don't want to think about doing everything, and why Matt's always turning into a goddam robot. This episode runs just under a couple hours. [more inside]

Tell me your weirdest, most niche interest!
I see a lot of people who say they're intimidated by posting FPPs because they're pretty sure no one else would be interested in what they find cool. I'm curious now: what kinds of niche interests and hobbies do you guys have? Tell me your nerdiest, most obscure pet fascinations!
