Site Update #1, 2020

Hello Metafilter! Welcome to the first of many regularly-scheduled updates on the state of the site. Comments will be turned off for these, as they’ll cover far too many topics for an unthreaded conversation to manage, but we’re happy to hear from you via the Contact Form. If you want to discuss a particular subject with the community, you’re welcome to open a separate MetaTalk thread for it. [more inside]

Issues with Recent Activity page on mobile Safari?

When I load this page, regardless of settings, it jumps back and forth between two apparently presentations and is totally unusable — you can’t read or click anything. Is this just me, or is it a broader problem? My iPad is new and up to date.

How should the issue of non-racial slurs be discussed?

The thread on “Racial slurs that should never be written,” was focused on racial slurs. Several people brought up other types of slurs, but they were told that that thread was not the place to address those slurs. This is the thread to discuss where to address those slurs. [more inside]

MetatalkMimosas: Your Music Muse!

Gorgik would like to know, what are your personal associations with music. What are some songs that are personally meaningful to you, and if you feel like sharing, what are those associations/what’s meaningful about them. Is it a person(s)? An event? A place? A time in your life? Or just what have you been listening to right now? Links welcome. [more inside]

R_N returns, MetaTalk process changes

Hi. I'm back.

I'm not gonna be modding. I'm going to be handling the administrative work behind the scenes, managing policy discussions, and processing user feedback. For those of you who don't know or remember, this is my professional background - I've done community management for companies large and small, and I'm excited to be putting those skills to use more directly than I did when I was concentrating on moderation. Anybody dug into the Racial Justice & Inequality Bundle?

It’s been more than a month since simmering octagon posted about itch.io’s Bundle for Racial Justice and Inequality. It seemed like a number of folks were considering picking up the bundle. I’m curious if anyone has had a chance to dig in and find some interesting gems.

Metatalktail Hour: Who is New In Your Life?

I can't speak for other people, but I miss seeing some of the people I usually see. At the same time I've been seeing some new people, either because they're on my same-y walk route, they're in a place that I am in, maybe they're doing an online thing that I've attended, or maybe they're just a new author or poet or actor or performer or activist that I've discovered. They may not be a person at all, maybe a pet or a plant our an outside animal you've been glimpsing during time at home. Who is new with you? [more inside]

Tasty and/or lovely things

Recently I discovered a recipe for so-called one-ingredient watermelon sorbet. It's basically frozen, seeded watermelon chunks that you freeze, then break up in a blender, then refreeze. It was unexpectedly tasty. Also, on a podcast today I heard Colin Hay and his song "Come Tumblin' Down" for the first time, which was fun. What tasty and/or lovely things are helping you cope during these sad, hard times?

MetaTalk Queue Notice

Quick MetaTalk queue note: I wanted to give you a heads up so that you know that we’ll have to hold off any substantial new MetaTalk discussions until next week. We’re going to be stretched especially thin the next few days and we’ll have partial coverage from mods during the weekend. We'll reach out to anyone who submits something to let them know about the delay directly as well. Community event or general discussions threads that don't require mod attention are fine and will be approved as usual. Thanks for your understanding.

Twitter harassment from Mefi Outsider & Go Mefi

How about that weather?

Is it hot or cold in your neck of the woods? Dealing with a blistering heat-wave or frosty winter morning? Rainy. Stormy. Sunny. Cloudy. Cold. Dry. Wet. Windy. Foggy. Whatever it is, let's talk weather. Feel free to share photos. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Stay safe.

About Harper's Letter

I was about to post about it when I discovered it has been deleted twice already. While I understand the reasoning, I feel it's important to have a place to discuss the letter and its responses, especially considering many of its signatories have been posted about on Metafilter positively in the past. Ignoring this letter because of how "sucky the sucky stuff is" contributes to hide their willing participation and endorsement.

Racial slurs that should never be written

A new feature has been rolled out site wide to block the ability to make posts or comments with a specific egregious racial slur and variants. Mods currently delete comments with other slurs as fast as they can after the comment is flagged but the community has decided we'd rather not have those words appear even for a short time (previously). Currently if your text includes a prohibited word your ability to post/comment is disabled. This thread is for discussing which other words fall into the category of racial slurs which should similarly be prevented from appearing in the site under any circumstances. [more inside]

Metafilter Podcast Guests

Has there been any consideration given to inviting Mefites to join in on the monthly podcasts? It would be fun to hear from many of our community members about anything ranging from their FPPs to their own experiences on Metafilter. I wanted to put this out to the community so that others here have an opportunity to give their input.

During the Winter Solstice holiday season, there's a shopping mall. There are MeFites and MeFi-affiliateds who make masks. Perhaps we could support them? There are mask questions on Ask.Me, so there's a market. [more inside]

MetaMedia

Life can be difficult, time are tough; it is very easy to feel overwhelmed. That being said, I'm curious about what you are reading, watching, listening, and playing to get through these turbulent times. I'm also interested in knowing if your consumption of media has changed over the last couple of months. Are you seeking out things that are light and easy to consume? Or maybe you seek comfort in something heavier and darker. Or maybe you've withdrawn from screens altogether and are finding pleasure in a more analog and tactile space. Share with the community if you feel up to it. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.

165: Take What We've Got

It's July, which is podcast season, or so the man at the podcast store told me. So jessamyn and I bought ourselves a podcast and took it out on the lake and, honestly, I don't know where I'm going with this. It's Friday, I'm pooped, we talk about MeFi stuff a bunch, it's about 90 minutes long, here you go. [more inside]
