Damn, when you said stress test, I was hoping there was an e-meter involved. I think I'm low on Thetans, but it's cold, so I don't want to go out for a refill unless I have to.

interrobang : Was he also banned?

I was wondering about this as well. Which might be a good time for a pony request, can the user-pages be updated to indicate if someone has been kicked?

And I don't like calling for banning, but vranghel seemed almost willful in his efforts to ignore the rules;

"As for the self link, there are no ads whatsoever, and the movie is hosted on my own paid for server;"

It's not like the rules are vague about this.

Banned? Perhaps we shall never know! But imagine if all the banned users suddenly came back to life... one dark night... posting... pushing legitimate members posts off the front page of the blue and green...

Maybe a little note on the person's profile page.

"Banned by Moderators."
"Banned until further notice"
"Timed Out."
"Has received 2 warnings, and we are being generous."

Also, dibs on his pants, once you are all done with them.

He should be banned just for mentioning the full-colour rape of an amazing and seminal horror film.

I did. Not on purpose, though. It was a Gateway, so I thought I was tipping a cow. Now I'm stressed.

So did the last guy. He wasn't banned.

funny story about the copyright on NOTLD. the reason it's public domain is because the copyright for the original print had been put on the title of the movie. The problem is that when George Romero first made the film, he called it Night Of the Flesh Eaters. I think. So when a studio wanted a different title, he just swapped out the title frames in the print, and neglected to reproduce the copyright notice from the original title. Lost a ton of prospective dollars on that, although the argument has been made that the film was as popular as it was partly due to how widely available it was to see on the cheap.

I was speaking of things spookier than the living dead. Scientologists.
posted by loquacious at 8:29 PM on December 9, 2006

Funny enough, the only time I've seen this film was went I bought it on DVD. As a plus though, the dvd came with the short "Night of the Living Bread", which everyone seems to hate but I thought was hilarious. There was just something nice about watching people play dead while guys were off-camera throwing bread at them.

posted by interrobang at 10:57 PM on December 9, 2006

By the way - I wouldn't be so sure that the colourised version is in the public domain. The original may well be (in the US) but a colourisation of a public domain work is probably copyrightable, in some countries at least.

Wait a minute, wait a minute.
Put away the pitchforks. People should not be banned for using a personal site to host a file that they did not themselves create. This is ridiculous.
The post should be deleted because it's not "best of the web." But the guy acknowledged his mistake and offered to post it to projects.
Yeesh. You know who else went ballistic when people broke the rules?

This is correct. People should be banned for linking to their own personal website, in an effort to drive traffic there.

Fun fact, kids:
The character's name is actually Barbra. This famous line has been misquoted in so many places because of the unconventional spelling of the name. Pretty much all the literature you'll find about the film references 'Barbara', but in the credits she's actually 'Barbra'.

Yeah, I wrote my dissertation on Night of the Living Dead, wanna fight about it?

I saw a teen stage production of Night of the Living Dead recently, and it was fantastic.

No, I want to know the title.
posted by Tuwa at 10:25 AM on December 10, 2006

Another fun fact:
In the original film, the rampaging hordes weren't zombies, but actually ghouls. It's listed in the end credits.
posted by Smart Dalek at 10:52 AM on December 10, 2006

OMG, bob sarabia. Back in the old days, before there were WBs and what have you and some TV stations were local and we didn't have cable, that film was shown while all the other stations were doing hardcore wildfire coverage (the fire was pretty close). My whole family laughed so hard. And every time I tell people about it, they do not see why it is hilarious. But it is! (My favorite part is when they walk out the door with the toaster & toaster oven.)
posted by dame at 11:07 AM on December 10, 2006

yeah, this seems a bit harsh. He had nothing to do with the actual project, right? It shouldn't go on projects unless he was creatively involved. But in this case, he just uploaded something he thought was cool to a site and linked to it, as far as I can see. If it had been available on the web already, he would have just linked to it and this would not have been an issue at all. Am I missing something?

I understand that it's still technically over the line, but it would not be appropriate on projects, and I think banning him for what seems like an honest mistake is unnecessary.

That's what he'd like you to believe, but look at the second link of this callout.

The dissertation was done to a question. A bit clunky, but here it is in it's unedited glory:

How does George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” explore the themes of social commentary and the destruction of 1960’s American institutions and their values?

Another fun fact: in the original trilogy of Romero's Dead films, the word 'zombie' is only used once (in Dawn of the Dead). Hence the scene in Shaun of the Dead about not using the 'Zed word'.

<Blatant self link>Chronology of the Living Dead.</Blatant self link> A little look into the extremely convoluted past, present and (then) future of the Dead series. The series has gotten even more complex since thanks to gems such as Night of the Living Dead 3D (trailer). Worth watching the trailer just for the godawful 'homage' to the killer line delivered in txt spch: 'Coming 4 U Barb'.

One of these days I'm gonna put this all to use and make a post about it here. But, as my neglected blog indicates, I'm a shiftless Mr. Lazypants.
