How should the issue of non-racial slurs be discussed?

The thread on “Racial slurs that should never be written,” was focused on racial slurs. Several people brought up other types of slurs, but they were told that that thread was not the place to address those slurs. This is the thread to discuss where to address those slurs. [more inside]

Racial slurs that should never be written

A new feature has been rolled out site wide to block the ability to make posts or comments with a specific egregious racial slur and variants. Mods currently delete comments with other slurs as fast as they can after the comment is flagged but the community has decided we'd rather not have those words appear even for a short time (previously). Currently if your text includes a prohibited word your ability to post/comment is disabled. This thread is for discussing which other words fall into the category of racial slurs which should similarly be prevented from appearing in the site under any circumstances. [more inside]

What's for dinner?

We're eating breakfast for dinner. Egg in a basket, or as I grew up calling it "egg-bread". How about you? What are you eating tonight? Feel free to share recipes. Be kind & stay safe.

Hide or Exclude COVID in AskMeFi ?

Could we get a 'no COVID' filter for Metafilter and AskMeFi sites? I understand that we shouldn't have sidebar filters for everything, but I do think the COVID posts are multiplying to the level of USPolitical posts and threads. Am I missing something in the MyAsk preferences--I don't see a way to exclude tags there? thanks for info.

How to block a specific post category

I'm grateful for the fact that I can block US politics posts. However, for mental health reasons, I really need to not see any Metafilter posts about the current environmental catastrophe - climate change, microplastics, mass extinction etc - even just the headline. This is not about keeping my head in the sand; I have taken personal and political action on these fronts in many ways. But reading about it has a profound emotional effect on me and can ruin my entire day, sometimes more than that. When I'm on tumblr, I use TumblrSavior and XKit to make sure I don't see posts about these topics - is there a greasemonkey script or similar that will take these posts completely off the front page for me? How do I keep up with long political threads?

As a Brit I find the recent US political threads compelling but it is difficult to keep up with the volume of posts. Is there a way to filter such threads by the amount of favorites each post has? Or is there another good way to skim the best of such high volume threads without it being a full time job?

Favorited comments, but not in *those* threads

My first MetaTalk post, and alas, it's a Friday afternoon pony request for the queue. I think it would be nice to be able to filter my Contact Activity to exclude activity on threads with specific tags. The election threads (yes, of course that's what I'm talking about) have been a lifesaver, and I'm spending most of my MetaFilter time on them. But my Contact Activity is also completely taken over by highly-favorited comments in those threads, usually topical but transient, and I'd like to be able to see what else is happening on MeFi. And I think others might like this feature too. [more inside]

Testing out a new US Politics sidebar widget

Based on a lot of discussion over the last year and especially the last couple months about how the site handles the visibility and organization of posts about contemporary US politics, we've put together a new sidebar tool that you can test out starting today. [more inside]

MeFi in the time of Trump - managing news

Like many, I was simultaneously hooked and exhausted by the pre-election rolling thread. I was very much looking forward to its demise. It's going to be a long four years. Can we find a way to keep the good and ease the pressure? [more inside]

Nancy, a Chrome extension for Metafilter

After the enhanced update of the diediedead Greasemonkey script, I received several requests from MeFites for a native Chrome extension, mostly because Chrome's Tampermonkey doesn't support all features, such as the context menu. I promised and, finally, I deliver: Nancy, available at the Chrome Web Store. Yeah, kind of a mouthful. [more inside]

Do comments here on Metafilter get "disappeared"?

I have a vague unsubstantiated feeling that some comments I've written got tossed into the memory hole. Am I being paranoid, or is this normal with some justification I'm not aware of? [more inside]

What the heck is up with deleting posts?

It seems that any interesting posts are getting deleted lately. Just now, The story about the bolt action rifle handed to the kid as a play toy - deleted. The story about the movies to help educate people before they make end of life decisions, deleted. And a few others that upset me at the time, before I noticed the trend... can't recall specifics. Is someone trying to push metafilter in a new direction, or what?

Meta Filter

I came across this interesting bit of information while doing some research on the London based conceptual artist Stephen Willats. According to his wiki, "His 1973 work Meta Filter consisted of pairs of participants seated at a computer, attempting to reach an agreement about the meanings of various images and statements." You can read more about Meta Filter here, and more about Willats at his website here.

Pony Request: Popular Posts sorted by # of comments

At present the 'Popular' tag is sorted by number of faves, but wouldn't it be cool if we could see which threads are receiving the most input, too? Input = comments.

Hey, check it out: Gamefilter

Why "Filters" before questions?

This is probably obvious, which is why I couldn't find it in the FAQ or the search. Why do people preface their questions with "[blank] filter:"? Does it help future searches and RSS filters?

Favorites Filter

Filter filter. Assuming that favorited comments are better than non-favorited comments, wouldn't the next logical step for the favorites system be to provide a way to distill threads down to their essential goodness? How about adding a drop down box at the top of each thread, letting the reader choose to filter out all the comments that don't make the grade -- displaying only the comments that have X number of favorites or more.

How to stop the spread of "_____Filter"

How to stop the spread of "_____Filter" in subject headings?
The wiki says (under the heading "inside jokes") that "___Filter" is used to indicate that a topic is so over-discussed as to risk taking over MetaFilter altogether. Examples are IraqFilter and NewsFilter. But current (and increasing) usage seems to be just an effort to be cute: BSDMFilter, CondomFilter, UmbrellaFilter, etc. I, for one, find this annoying and stupid and think it should be discouraged. It's like one of those things that is mildly amusing the first couple of times and thereafter just idiotic. I think that the WhatIsAGoodPost, WhatIsAGoodComment, WhatIsAGoodQuestion entries should be altered to discourage people from this dumb practice.

AskMe sorting and posting

1 Etiquette, 1 request.

Etiquette - are you allowed to post to ask.mefi with no comments at all in threads? (looked all over etiquette questions+wiki couldn't find the thread/answer)
-----
Request:
Any way to filter Ask.ME questions to those questions with <5 (or 10) answers with no best answer?br>
It'd be very useful to see all the questions with only one to four responses...that often get scrolled by.

What is this filtering you speak of?

I just saw a comment on Metafilter today, I think it was, talking about another "[Fill in the blank] Filter" website, but saying that "Not much filtering was going on..." As a neophyte, I'd need some explanation about "filtering". It seems to be far more than, say, censorship or limiting access... but I was wondering if somebody could offer a more complete definition that covers specifically how Metafilter and other sites like it are "filtering". Thanks!!

I vote for a moratorium on prefacing posts with xFilter (i.e. foodFilter, sexFilter, tivoFilter, etc.) Maybe in a few month it will be amusing again, but at the moment it just makes me tired.

It used to be frowned upon to post links from other link agregators/filters. Has it changed?

When I used to read MeFi regularly, it was generally accepted that you didn't post anything from "the usual suspects" such as memepool, boing boing, b3ta, etc. because they themselves are weblogs about interesting, offbeat links and most readers read them as well as MeFi. Seeing as this "LSD art" story has been the top item on memepool for a week, I guess this policy has changed. (This is really not meant to sound rude or snide, apologies if it's taken that way)

Filtering the 'Filter

Now that MeFi Distilled has been dormant throughout September, how are time-challenged and reassurance-seeking users to know what's worth reading on MetaFilter? I wonder how many readers rely on extraneous filters to get a handle on what to follow here. MeFi Distilled is good. Are there any other time-saving devices for those of us too occupied to read every single word?

So the blogstop thread is still going strong.

So the blogstop thread is still going strong. Somebody who's been here longer than me...has something like this happened before? This could be a precedent.

So, is it possible to create another precedent? Namely...posting another FPP, specifically so that people have somewhere new to go to comment, instead of trying to comment in the extant thread?

Surely this place is a FILTER and not a discussion board, but seeing how so many of us are still fooling around on that thread, I thought it'd be nice to have it "refreshed", so to speak.

thisisgettingalittleold-filter.com

I'm getting tired of the increasing tendency to add "filter.com" as an implied criticism of the theme of a thread or post, e.g. in this thread we start off with two - northkoreafilter.com and iranfilter.com. Is it just me, or does anyone think this getting a little old.

So we've all seen BookFilter and WarFilter, but have you seen MusicFilter or KittenFilter? With FreeFilter 0.3 coming soon, one can't help but wonder what this will mean for the ancestor... Furthermore, Could the MetaFilter interface become the "killer app" in community weblogging?

Will we spin ourselves off with all these spinoffs?

Already there are BookFilter for books; SportsFilter for sports; a 9622.net and 1142.net for chattiness and fun. Not to mention the increasingly vigorous #mefi chatroom and other offshoots I may be unaware of. There's been talk of a MovieFilter and a News and/or PoliticsFilter. The admirable FreeFilter project makes it easy to set up other special-interest, breakaway micro-MetaFilters.
Is it possible that all this syphoning-off will one day syphon off the core of MetaFilter itself? Or are all these spin-offs mere adjuncts? For what it's worth, I'm plainly on the side of eclecticism and inclusiveness.

Preview does not match post

This post had a white background when I previewed it (like this one still does), but it disappeared when I posted it. Shouldn't "Preview" mean "show me what I'll get if hit Post now"?

The HTML filter appears to have elided the "style=" and quote marks from the tag.

Metafilter front page filter

OK, there were 40 front-page posts yesterday. Just for laffs, here's a MetaFilter front page filter. Change the number after the ? in the URL to change the highest numbered user whose posts you'll see. Old school!

(Here's the source.)

I'll make this filter private soon, 'cause I just wrote it to support this suggestion: I think something like this should be a MetaFilter preference. Anyone else?

Should I filter MetaFilter (asks mathowie)?

This thread sucks. The link doesn't jump down to the story, the subject matter isn't very funny or interesting, it's just stupid. The post is too long, the comments are pretty pointless. I would delete it, but it could create more trouble than it is worth. What should be done about sub-par links? Anything? Take the good with the bad?

Been-there-done-that Button Pony Request

Been there/Done that:

A button so that if a significant number of readers mark a post as a duplicate or just really boring, etc. then your preferences filter it out. So if someone were to post AYBABTU again, annoyed readers would mark it, and those who came later wouldn't see it unless they turned off their filter.

Metafilter for artists/designers/photographers?

Metafilter is a great site, but by sheer definition it covers a wide gamut of topics. Are there any Metafilteresque or 'slash' sites for artists, designers or photographers? I want a k10kesque slash site to visit.

Aside from that, what other wonder sites are there which fit into this mold? I'm currently enjoying iaslash.org a great deal, which is for information architects. Other than that, I'm stumped. Thanks!
