Feature Request: prevent racial slurs from being posted

I have noticed that certain egregious racial slurs are being deleted by mods with a note. I am requesting a feature to simply prevent users from posting these slurs in the first place. [more inside]

Muting Certain Commenters

I find I'm reluctant to post any sort of "human relations" question because there's always going to be people who invidiously misrepresent or distort the question or otherwise show gratuitous ill-will. And even just coming here occasionally, I've noticed it consistently tends to be the same people. I understand that MetaTalk serves to give everyone a voice, and that's fine, but is there a way, or could a feature be added, where I personally "mute" selected commentators? Others can read their comments if they find them constructive and I could filter out what I perceive as malignant.

Putting the "Meta" in "MetaFilter"

Based on the front page, I can tell that other posters use some of the same resources to find potential FPPs that I do. I'll lay my cards on the table, and hope you do the same... [more inside]

Please don't ask

I was in my local public library today and wanted to look up a thread about Paris that I'd seen in Ask Metafilter, so I got on one of the library's computers. I was surprised to find that the library blocks Ask MeFi. How common is this? How can I get the library to unblock it?

I would like to have a way to hide some of the AskMe questions

I would like to have a way to hide some of the AskMe questions -- a button that would leave the title, but make the front-page part of the question invisible. I'm not talking about filtering out a user; I just want remove some questions from sight. If this is do-able, is there a downside to it? I swear this has nothing to do with the survey about scary things.

The metafilter.org backdoor has been closed

Once upon a time not so long ago, I could type in the FQDN http://www.metafilter.org and actually resolve that address and browse Metafilter threads from my office. Now, when I try to use that address, it automatically reverts to http://www.metafilter.com and that address is blocked by my company's "Smartfilter" as "chat/forums". I can't read threads at work anymore and I'm pretty sad about that.

What is this filtering you speak of?

I just saw a comment on Metafilter today, I think it was, talking about another "[Fill in the blank] Filter" website, but saying that "Not much filtering was going on..." As a neophyte, I'd need some explanation about "filtering". It seems to be far more than, say, censorship or limiting access... but I was wondering if somebody could offer a more complete definition that covers specifically how Metafilter and other sites like it are "filtering". Thanks!!

Ways to limit the front page

Um, I never remember having heard any thoughts on either of the following two (three) ideas: so I'll repost them en banc:

IWBNI: you could limit the front page in three ways:
1) Threads that I have not read yet
2) Threads that I have read, but not posted on, with comments newer than my last view
3) Threads I have posted on, with comments newer than my last post.

I think those three subsets exhaust the set, no?

It wopuld seem to me that that is all timestamps in cookies, but I don't speak CF...
