How local is too local for the Metafilter front page? [more inside]
Silent deletion of FPP, no reason given.
What the hell? Silent deletion of my FPP! I know that political correctness is the force that moves Metafilter, but come ON here people!
The post was a short one, centered on this story: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,314564,00.html and apparently that's a story that Metafilter is not ready to handle at this point in time.
True to form
By request...
No
No. Can we have some standards and not participate in this crap?
I'd also like to ask for a pre-emptive strike on any NewsFilter post about the latest missing and found dead rich white girl they're talking about now.
Newsfilter: Zero Tolerance
Newsfilter: Zero Tolerance. [mi]
Bush sucks, deleted
What happened to the thread on the Presidential speech?..
Judiciousness in Lebanon newsfilter
Considering the recent events in Lebanon, can we perhaps consider a bit of extra judiciousness with postings like this one,and commenting therein if they stay up? I don't think anyone questions the gravity of the situation there, but most posts dealing with it are basically Newsfilter situations that devolve into extremely impassioned flamewars and insoluble arguments about the validity of a number of Big Issues.
Are we not supposed to talk about i/p?
So are we not supposed to talk about Israel/Palestine at all now? this post was deleted, apparently because it was about the Israel/Palestine situation. It's a fairly straight-forward post to an NYT article. Is all news about the situation verboten or what?
Did I miss a thread?
Was there a "Bush expresses regret for 'Bring it on!' " thread, and I missed it? apolgies if this should've been asked in AskMeFi instead
where does breaking news update go?
This morning two Australian miners were freed after being trapped underground for 15 days. And this morning on MeFi, we had not one but two threads devoted to it. The latter was deleted but the former still stands. Which raises the question of why, when there was already a thread devoted to the subject only a few days ago, wherein this news belongs.
Bad newsfilter post.
Ignore and move on already.
shopping days until WH indictments
What are we getting for Fitzmas? [mi]
baby scientologist thread to be aborted
This simply has to go.
HypotheticalNewsFilter
Newsfilter with a Crystal Ball: Return to Flight and Jerry Lewis Telethon ... not to mention that Newsweek might nail Karl Rove tomorrow. Don't we get enough current events here without having to post about things that might happen in the future?
And it's not even page 3
No one complains about newsfilter when people die
About today's earthquake/tidal wave post : today I read the New York Times site before Metafilter, but I dismissed the possibility of posting about it because of the recent snarking against linking to current news articles in front page posts.
Then I clicked on my Mefi tab to discover somebody had posted about it, and nobody's posted any "NewsFilter" gripes yet. Is it that the 0ldB33 Snarkers Committee really means "...to news articles we don't like (and you have to read our minds)", or is there a policy of ranking the human costs of natural disasters somewhere above doggie dildos after all?
As for that thread's content, I was little dismayed about the comments where people's big concern was for one dried-up (and never very good) Sci-Fi author (the movie "2001" was Kubrick's doing, y'all), but I withheld my remarks about that failure of etiquette and (as I see it) morals from the Blue -- as, as of this typing, so has everybody else.
But then of course I'm still a "n00b".... Are concerns like those I've expressed here today okay, or should I first submit my MetaTalk thread ideas to some MetaCognoscenti as well?

Pointless Meta callout for YankeeNewsFilter
Newsfilter callout
The Final Nail. I haven't been reading as much lately---I'm am hoping that the election will be over soon so the excuses are gone for shitty posts. But, there it is.
A double post. It is a Newsfilter post, that isn't even news since it has been talked about for over a decade. It is clearly does not meet the stated standard. It is a classic troll: toss a turd that you *know* will incite much argument, for no apparent reason.. It is a single-link to a newspaper. It is a blatant amount of negative campaigning even while we try to encourage voting with a new link at the top of the page.
For the love of god, it is a self-Godwinizing post!
Matt posted the very next post, 30 minutes later, so there is no chance he didn't see the post.
Yet... it remains there on the blue.
It is the piece de resitance of the the shithole Matt has willingly allowed MeFi to become. I would say amazing if it wasn't so sad....

what bush and kerry did in the vietnam years
i am so tired of reading about bush and kerry and what they did and didn't do during the vietnam years ... could we please just give it a break? ... this is nothing but monotonous drum beating ...

Who is right, in the US centric vs Newsfilter debate
What does the reaction to this post tell us? Myabe it's just a statistical blip, but I'm a bit surprised at the very vocal negative reaction to this bit of US-centric front-page/TV news as contrasted to the reaction to the NewsFilter posts we get every single day. Why are the naysayers in this thread right when the anti-NewsFilteristas are not? What, exactly, is different?
More and more Newsfilter, and boring Newsfilter at that
The pancakes are getting incredibly stale, people.
Metafilter used to be an addiction for me, but lately with more and more Newsfilter, and boring Newsfilter at that, can we really say we are the best of the Web anymore? Final straw was the posting of that Bush daughter photo.
Is this really what we want this place to be?

A "bill under consideration" has little more weight than "my last blog entry"
"Why was this even posted? A 'bill under consideration' has little more weight than 'my last blog entry' unless there's some serious evidence that it's going to get passed." The bill passed the Ohio House yesterday.
Newsfilter as FPPs
Predictions: I just noticed the news, "White House to Let Rice Testify in Public" on AP. How long until this becomes an FPP. Doesn't it seem lately that every piece of news is getting posted? Where does one draw the line between news that should be an FPP and news that shouldn't

OldNewsFilter
WaybackmachineFilter.
This story is NewsFilter, but not new NewsFilter (which is not so much a problem for me as it is for others) it's OLD news which by definition is not news. Not only that, but the new news of this old story (which was covered in many a place) is that the patent was considered invalid:
"A panel set up to look at the Patent Office has concluded that the current system is not working very well. Given that the USPTO managed to conclude in a breathtakingly fast 12 months that a patent for how to swing on a rope swing was invalid [no, I'm not making this up...], I don't see what the big problem is. Meanwhile, Amazon announced their intention to seek a patent on the printed word, and possibly on stone carvings." from Linuxworld.
Although the poster admits it's old news, this raises the question of why post it at all. It's been widely covered.

U.S.A. bad, kills civilians (again)
U.S.A. bad, kills civilians. Guess what folks, we've done this before, several times. Isn't it time to declare a moratorium?
Quick and lazy newsfilter posts.
"This is MetaFilter, not NewsFilter, asshat"
"This is MetaFilter, not NewsFilter, asshat": a delightful namecheck from the crucial, irrepressible Misanthropic Bitch, echoing a worthy sentiment and a cause by now well lost. (Received by e-mail, with thanks.)
pppppplllllllease i know it sucks but...!
Three-paragraph post plus pre-emptive plea from author for forgiveness equals a thread filled with crap.
Different thread, same topic
Surely we don't need another thread on the Hussein boys so soon, do we?
What can we do to encourage people to pad out their NewsFilter posts?
What can we do to encourage people to pad out their NewsFilter posts? Yes it is an interesting piece of news, and yes I am sure some interesting comments may follow but surely some extra links to relevant elements of the story is not too difficult? C'mon folks, off your fat asses.
The Return of I/P Filter!
The Return of I/P Filter! And the main link is just a CNN.com story. Can we say Newsfilter? The poster doesn't even try to be objective, rattling on about his "opinion" on (yawn) Bush. And...
This shouldn't even be on the news...
Dude! I have always wanted to be the first person to post a snarky "double post" meta thread. Kick ass!
Racist, inflammatory, trolling newsfilter post
This thread, despite generating a huge response, is
A.) Newsfilter
B.) Racist, inflammatory, and designed as nothing more than a troll. I realize that MaddD enjoys posts that cause controversy, as evidenced by his topic post history, but suggesting that grieving parents should be shackled to a floor because of their immigration status seems a little much.

Newsfilter in the worst way
This thread is a NewsFilter post in the worst way.
It is not new (Newsflash: Bush to Lower Taxes, Water Wet) or interesting. And it certainly doesn't lend itself to much discussion. I, for one, want to be subjected to Randian diatribes only slightly more than I want people posting their personal tax ephemera on metafilter. The fact that the article is from a mainstream news source only adds insult to injury.

Nothing happened; News at 11
Reporting the absence of news? Isn't that what this thread's doing?
Plus, the searches linked in the FPP are unlikely to bear any fruit, given that they're hyper-specific (within quotation marks) and not grammatically correct unless you speak headline-ese.

Newsy pet-issue post.
Newsy pet-issue post. Goose or Gander?
Awesome info in "breaking news"
A "breaking news" thread we can all admire. Bravo, Hammerikaner.
Sniper News Central
How about linking to one of the dozen-odd currently active sniper threads from the sideblog and designating it "Sniper News Central"?
Newsfilter's Greatest Hits
So in case you missed the posts linking to well-known news stories in well-known media outlets, there's now a post that collects them all for you. Nothing new here, just collected for your browsing pleasure. Call it MetaNewsFilter. Jeepers.
moratorium on the ME?
Is there any way MeFi could have a voluntary moratorium on Middle East threads? Just for a week, a day, or even several hours? I understand that I should ignore them. I do. I don't post them and I rarely comment, if ever. But I can't even go a few threads without seeing another one. And now people are posting each and EVERY detail...come on, for the sake of some sanity, and a chance to reflect, a voluntary moratorium for any given time?
Too much Ananova.
Could we have a moratorium on Ananova links for now? While other news sources have not been dead on, they seem to be way off base more than others. There are quite a few reading Mefi right now, and disinfo from what looks like a credible source could hurt.
Article too old
Criminy ... can we at least confine our periodical links to stories published this century?
