If your website is full of assholes, it's your fault

Mefite[1] Anil Dash[2] writes[3]: "Simply learning from disciplines like urban planning, zoning regulations, crowd control, effective and humane policing, and the simple practices it takes to stage an effective public event, we can come up with a set of principles to prevent the overwhelming majority of the worst behaviors on the Internet." Examples? Why Metafilter, of course, (as well as Stack Exchange sites, of which he is a board member). [more inside]

Hello, Radios!

I'll be doing a short, on-air, phoned in interview with Ronald Jenkees of youtube fame this Wednesday starting at 3pm (eastern standard time). You can listen to it live here. There will be a recording on that site shortly thereafter. If there are any questions the MeFi crowd would like me to ask, post them.

Please help me name my mix CD about kittens.

The AskMe guidelines make a simple-sounding request: 'Please avoid "help me name my kitten/computer/website" and "help me make a mix CD" questions.' But these kinds of questions are posted fairly frequently, and seldom seem to be deleted. How many of these kinds of questions are posted, and what proportion of those are removed? If the guideline isn't being enforced because people love the name-my-whatever questions, maybe it would be better to just get rid of the guideline. Alternately, if the guideline is to remain, maybe it would be better to make it more prominent, and/or to delete a larger proportion of the questions which break it.

Did Anyone else notice the MiFi shoutout on Mythbusters?

There was a Mythbusters marathon recently. At the end of one of the the shows, behind Adam and Jamie, on the back wall, there was a masking tape "MeFi."

Why are multiple links to the Astronomy Picture of the Day OK?

Why isn't this APOD post considered to be a double, triple or quadruple? [MI]

APOD doesn't seem to be an aggregator like BBC or CNN, all they do is post invariably awesome pictures of space everyday. Is it going to be acceptable to post to the front page every time something interesting is posted there (ala the proliferation of youtube links)?

Let's define news- and politics filter

"if you can craft a definition of news and politics related threads that anyone can read and judge their pending post against, and it's so clear and concise that no one would second guess it and wonder why their news or politics related thread was removed, I'd be happy to add it. Because right now, there's no way I could make a black & white, water-tight set of guidelines for discouraging and deleting political and news posts. I don't keep them around for the traffic, I keep them around because there's no easy way to say what should stay and what should go, as six years of metatalk have already covered." -mathowie

Let's do this.

Why Is There So Much Spam In Our Wiki?

I know this has been brought up before, but I believe that it's frustrating enough to deserve being brought up again. Why is the wiki so spam-ridden?

Every time I go to look at it, at least 75% of the things I click on are spam or "DeletedPage: This page was WikiSpam. "

Seriously, If nobody's going to put in the effort to keep the wiki spam-free, why even bother to have it, especially now that we have a FAQ?

5-minute collaborative media quiz (Metafilter included!)

Users of collaborative media are invited by Dan Gillmore to take this five-minute research quiz authored by a Kennedy School of Government student. The quiz is very well crafted and asks lots of good questions, with room for specific written comments by respondents, and Metafilter is one of the sites specifically mentioned. Via BoingBoing.

How does the "Metafilter users near me" thing work?

Question about the "Metafilter Users Near..." thing.

I show a user named mdevore within 4 miles of me. He in turn shows a huge slug of users at the 23 mile mark from him.

Given our relatively close proximity, shouldn't more of those being showing up on my listing as well? What's the outer threshold of that listing?

The metafilter.org backdoor has been closed

Once upon a time not so long ago, I could type in the FQDN http://www.metafilter.org and actually resolve that address and browse Metafilter threads from my office. Now, when I try to use that address, it automatically reverts to http://www.metafilter.com and that address is blocked by my company's "Smartfilter" as "chat/forums". I can't read threads at work anymore and I'm pretty sad about that.

Buggy user search results

Frequently when I do a user search, they don't come up. If they do, it's because their user name is somewhere in the text, like "iconomy" at the bottom of this user page. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug?

Why do some Metafilter features appear in Firefox but not Safari?

I’m a rookie Mac user and pretty new around this site. I’ve noticed while computer hopping that when I use a PC there is a small toolbar in the lower-right corner of the message windows on this site. It’s the one with the Bold, Italic and Link buttons. When I use this site on my iMac, there is no such tool bar. Is this a settings thing or just a “feature” of using a Mac? Also, is this an appropriate use of MetaTalk or should I post things like this in Ask MetaFilter?

"What x are you?" quizzes

Yes, I know that "what x are you?" quizzes are the worst of intarweb clichéry, but when I saw this one (via PreSurfer), I had to waste five minutes and take the quiz. Any other similar sites?

Metafilter is one of those sites I visit when I've got 2 seconds to rub together, and the rubbing won't intrude too much on my train of thought. I read the posts, and I can dive in when something seems too entertaining to pass up. Other sites that hit me the same way: Boing Boing, Fark, and /.. However, on a particularly loathsome day of work related idiocies, I find that I can exhaust those sites pretty quickly (particularly since I let my TotalFark subscription lapse). Does anyone have other locations that are equal parts whimsy and serious thought?

Java-script bug in captions

I've found a bug in the new javascript captions that come up on links with title attributes - in Phoenix/Mozilla, if I ctrl-click on a link to open it in a new tab, the caption stays up, and the only way to make it go away is to reload the page.

Email links encryption and comment count questions

I have two issues. First, shouldn't the email link on the user pages be encrypted to make it harder for spam robots to collect the address? Second, why isn't the comment count on user pages updated when threads are deleted? I have 4 Metatalk comments listed, but only two of them are still online.

Distilling Metafilter

I have an idea for a blog and wanted to get some feedback. Metafilter often creates great threads with each poster adding additional links and insights but one has to dig through the noise and do a lot of reconstruction to get the good bits. The idea for the blog would be a meta summary of certain threads pulling all the good links, quotes and ideas together in single post, a sort of "best-of" with appropriate footnoting for recognition of contribution. This would take some writing skill. The summary thread can then be TB'd on a separate blog so readers of metafilter would have access and because it is a "best-of" it would have more permanence and a chance for additional contributions. Thoughts?

How does Metafilter's logon work across the sites?

Is it wrong to use MeFi as your own personal soapbox?

"So let me get this straight. We have a post with a link to a cheesy bio page that is uninteresting, really has nothing to do with anything said in the post, and is only provided as a catalyst to debate something someone's professor said?" Apologies to Mikhail, but he brings up a pertinent point. When one chooses to compose a FPP for MeFi, which should come first: an appropriate link, or a soapbox worthy topic? Is it wrong to use MeFi as your own personal soapbox? How can one tell (preferably before they hit the post button) when they're out of line?

Apology for Actions (Jonmc, JakeExtreme): DreamFilter

Two-Part Post. One, I'd like to pre-emptively apologize for me and JakeExtreme's excessive silliness is yesterday's Al Qaeada thread. Nobody's said anything and I suppose no harm was done, but reading the posts this morning, I feel kinda stupid. Jake is gonna be in SLC on Guard duty for the olympics for a month, so it was kind of a farewell party. But we hijacked a good thread. So, sorry.
Two, last night I was staring at a blurry blue and white computer screen, dying to type, but my hands wouldn't move, I struggled then...I woke up. I actually dreamed I was reading Metafilter! Has this happened to anyone else? And what does it all mean?

Best web-logs of the year, 2001?

"These are the best weblogs this year in my humble opinion. Who will win? That's up to you!"

No it's not, it's up to you Dave, because you picked them (and they were of course, heavy on the Manila/Frontier-based blogs).

Here's my question: what's the point of doing this? To bring attention to Manila and Radio? To sell a few copies of Frontier based on the press? He asks if he should call his personal awards "the bloggies" but if he tried google he would see the first return is the Bloggies, which were nominated in a more democratic way and voted on in the same way.

This information may be up here somewhere but I've yet to find it:

What's the lurker/poster/commentator percentages, like, is there a pie chart somewhere?

How many people who sign up eventually lapse/disappear from MeFi or never ever post a link or comment ?

Who are the top ten/twenty posters?

What percentage of total overall posts are by the aforementioned?

Is MiguelCardoso an android ala the Buster Friendly Show in Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? Does he ever sleep?
