The only gift you'll ever get back and love even more.
Because I spent June 15 compressed at the bulkhead at the end of two Adventists reading: He: "The (New, Illustrated) Great Controversy" and She: "Creation Illustrated: The Christian Alternative to National Geographic" I forgot to mention the most important thing you can do all day! [more inside]

He was in his armchair, watching a John Wayne movie. It could have been so much worse.
Another "Best of Metafilter" request.
So, my grandfather died today (as I anticipated a few months ago), and one of my first reactions is to look to Metafilter for comfort and guidance. I've found a few relevant threads on my own (just taking a cursory glance at ColdChef's posting history helps put death in perspective), but I'd appreciate other mefites' help: what are the most helpful, or comforting, or grounding threads you've read on the site that have to do with death and grieving? How big (in bytes) is Metafilter? [more inside]
It actually is kind of serious business.
I, too, am trying to find a comment I'm almost certain I read on the Blue. It was a refutation of the glib, "The internets is serious business!"-style dismissal of people who would deign to take anything said online to heart. The tone of the comment was something to the effect of, "Sure, it's no big deal, it has only connected much of the world's population in ways only dreamed of," or something. I'm not doing it justice, nor am I trying to.
The commenter might have been quoting someone else. Many thanks to anyone who can locate this!
Award for Mefite Genius?
How about if the Metafilter Scholarship be used as an award for a project by a Mefite they can present publicly at the big 10th anniversary event? The winner could be chosen by how many times their presentation is favorited as a live event being posted on Metatalk because it's related. [more inside]

Metafilter Music Podcast?
Has anyone thought about doing a periodic podcast of tunes exclusively from music.metafilter? Would Metafilter or any of the artists have an issue with someone doing this? Would anyone want to host it or help in other ways? Would anyone listen to it?

metafilter data analysis
Has anyone done any interesting analysis of metafilter data? I'd like to see average posts/day, average comments/post over time, for starters. But I bet there are many more interesting/pointless questions to be answered beyond that.

MetaFilter in the media

MeFi iPhone icon unavailable?
Anyone else unable to add a custom MeFi icon webclip to their iPhone home screen? I just get a snapshot of the page, instead of the nice blue MF logo (which was working for me earlier this year.) How Not To Sell Out
Two months ago, Fearless Leader gave a neat talk at WebVisions 2008 about how to make money off your particular web passion without resorting to venture capital interference or selling out, and the slides and the audio (MP3) from his talk are now online. It's plenty cool enough to watch/listen to on its own merits, if you've ever dreamed of running your own web company or making a small-but-cool web tool -- but since MetaFilter (and what it's been like to start and run MetaFilter) are mentioned prominently, I thought it was worth noting here, rather than on the Blue. 5 minutes of great reading.
