I live MeFi in dreams

I had a dream last night that I was at the base of a pyramid, and there was something earth-destroying in the pyramid, like an ancient God-like evil. I had to work my way through the booby trapped maze of the pyramid to reach the evil before it awoke, and so I popped open my trusty laptop and went to AskMeFi and typed my first question: How do I get to the center of a booby trapped pyramid maze. The answers started pouring in, and I began my mission, dodging ancient mummies and flying spikes. [more inside]

Mefi Made Me See The Light!

Has one of your long-held opinions/beliefs ever been swayed by a Mefi post or comment? I don't mean a mundane opinion like "I prefer mashed potatoes to french fries," but a really important opinion, like a major cultural/political stance (i.e. a long-held belief regarding religion, abortion, homosexuality, vegetarianism, conservative vs. liberal, etc.). If so, what thread and/or comment was the turning point for you? And how did you feel about thinking differently?

Why doesn't matthowie have a $200M valuation?

Why is MeFi not part of the social news site boom? Digg, reddit, newsvine, and others are the lucrative hot trend, but MeFi seems to do the same thing better (no Ron Paul spam), smarter, and for longer, and we even have favorites, for those who want voting-like capabilities. So why is MeFi not included with these young whippersnappers? And why are they not learning from MeFi's evolved model of light moderation, talk pages, and strong self-policing?

MeFi makes ink in the Globe and Mail

Good news, bad news. The good news: Metafilter got a shoutout today in the National edition of Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper (along with boing boing, and a couple others: story here). The bad news? Something called metafilter.org. Oh well, he nearly got it right. And it does redirect to Mefi. One step forward....

Help me find an FPP about swarms of birds that darken the sky

A while back (more than 2 months, less than a year) I remember an FPP that linked to a few short films of birds swarming in the sky in giant flocks that nearly darkened the sky. Might have been somewhere in the Netherlands but I recall it being an annual event. The swarming activity made for amazing patterns in the sky. I don't think this was just in my dreams but can't find it through any searches of the site. Can anyone help?

OK to post a self-link to a news story?

Is it considered a self-link to post a legitimate news story that you have a personal connection to? If it is, is it OK for me to use MeTa to ask someone else to post it instead of me? I don't want to cirumvent the rules, so I'll hold off on giving the links until there's a reasonable consensus in favor of it.

Metafilter or MetaFilter?

Is there a MetaFilter watchlist?

Matt: Do you have a "watch list" like the Department of Homeland Security apparetly has? I mean a list of potential offenders in terms of breaking the MeFi code. Dumb posters like me. Do you look out for certain types of threads and within them do you purge threatening content? Do you profile? What does the "War On Terror" mean to MetaFilter in terms of spying stuff and administration people? Has George W. Bush's adminstration had an impact on MetFilter in a concrete way? Beyond NewsFilter have you been seriously pressured at any time beyond the five bucks? Sorry for the double query. has Karl Rove or his proxy knocked on your door?

Best posts of the day

So, about this best post of the day thing.. are you announcing it on MeTa every day?

I think it would be kind of cool if you also highlighted it on Metafilter, ala AskMe favorited comments. That way, scrolling back a day or two on the front page I'll be able to tell the winning posts at a glance.

Massively Multiplaying MeFites?

MeFites in MMOs? Based on some of the comments in this thread (and others, others and still others), it is an easy guess that Metafilter has substantial representation in many a server-based world. So confess. Where do you spend your virtual time? Is it WoW? Is it CoH or CoV? Is it KoL? Is it EVE? Who knows ... there might be some untapped potential here.

Meta-freakin-omics

How do the economics of MetaFilter work? I know this may be kind of rude to even ask, but it seems to me that this is an awful lot of coding and maintenance to be financed only by five dollar donations and small non-intrusive ads. Speaking of advertisements, does it cost Matt money if I use adblock to remove the ads before I even see them?

Multiple accounts - menace or meaningless?

"I know someone who owns hundreds upon hundreds of digg accounts, and thousands more on other 'buzz'-worthy sites. I know that he owns about 5 metafilter accounts, all registered after the $5 registration fee, all well used and difficult to call 'plant' on." O RLY? That doesn't seem like a good thing to me, at least. What say the rest of you? Menace or meaningless?

Sweeping generalizations = bad

Much as I love all kinds of inflammation... Single Link Opinion post or not, there's something to be said for not making sweeping derogatory generalizations about a type of person when your link is about one person. Following that up with snide remarks and sniping fellow MeFites who question the word choice? Always the way to go.

Too popular for MeFi?

What's the etiquette on posting stuff you've just seen at somewhere like BoingBoing? So far this morning, there's been 2 posts that appeared on BB in the last week. I saw them when they first came up there, and thought, "hey, this is neat, people on Mefi would like this," but then decided against posting them here. I know that sometimes one can encounter a flurry of "Xfilter!!!!" comments by doing something like that.

Should we actively avoid posting things we've seen on other, highly popular link-oriented blogs?

what IS metafilter?

"This website exists to break down the barriers between people, to extend a weblog beyond just one person, and to foster discussion among its members."

-or-

"MetaFilter is about posting links to interesting sites."

Which is correct?

Finding interesting sites is a solved problem. I was always under the impression that the former was the more important feature of MeFi.

How can my father promote his New Orleans towboat pilot relief effort?

My father is attempting to start a New Orleans relief effort among towboat pilots (he is one himself). He's posted a "call to action" on his site, and I'd like to get the word out. Web 2.0 detectives on MetaFilter

If you ever find yourself trying to explain what Web 2.0 is all about, here's a quiet, excellent example you can point to. A random web user encounters a breaking news story about a man accused of kidnapping, (apparently) did some rudimentary searching, used a free and useful web archive and search tool, and pointed any interested parties within a certain community of web users to a cached version of the suspect's weblog, which reveals a wealth of interesting if chilling information that moves the narrative of our knowledge forward long before any word of it reaches common news aggregators. Once the new information is there, some chafe is posted but more wheat is added to the story. It may all end up being hooey-- not the weblog of the suspect. But this example of normal people using freely available tools to contribute to the collective knowledge will remain.

Tired old argument

This thread should be fun.

Really? I hate to spoil the ending for you, but this thread has already been fun over and over and over and over. It always goes the same way. Thanks for summarizing it for us, but is there some purpose in posting the results of a Google news search for "smoking" other than to rehash the same old tired argument yet again?
