Mefi notices the Taliban back before they were fab

This post was flagged fantastic, five years ago today. It seems we underestimated the "Taleban's" Godwin factor. By a lot.

Announcing: favorites and flagging

I'm working on favorites and releasing what I have today. Think of favorites as an internal bookmark system, a way to keep a list of the good questions, great comments, or interesting ideas you've found here.

Right now, you can mark a thread on mefi, metatalk, or ask mefi as a favorite, and view it at the link in the header above (is the header too wide for small monitors?). All your stuff marked as a favorite is public and anyone else can see the stuff you've marked (this comes in handy later on).

I'll be adding the ability to flag comments later today and very soon I'll be doing something akin to the fantastic posts page on Ask MeFi, where the most favorited things over the past few days is highlighted on a single page.

The tags have gone missing from the ebay scam question.

Tag conveniently gone missing?. Like many others, I've been following the askme thread originally posted by airnxtz where he is found to be a scammer and where hopefully we will soon have word about the consequences of his scamming. Normally I search for this thread by looking at the "all posts tagged ebay", but the question is no longer listed on that page. In fact once I found the question, I see that it no longer has the ebay tag or any other tag. I assume that though airnxtz has lost his posting privileges, he still has the privilege to edit his own tags and has done so. Otherwise, what happened to the tag and can we get it back?

eBay scammer identified

can anyone clarify what's happening here? seems like some mefi detective work might either shed some light on things, or clear the poster's name; i'm not sure browbeating him with false dichotomies is working.

The early days of MeFi

Looking back in the archives, almost every post (except for 4) in August of '99 was submitted by #1. I wonder if those first few months of MeFi's life was frustrating.

Can we lose orange clock and keep chicobangs, please? Okay, that's not the best way to say it. I am no angel myself, but this beyond-the-pale swipe at chicobangs and mathowie - from a member of dubious contribution overall (IMHO) - should not go ignored.

Jingle Rock Bell

AskMefiFollowup: I like to sing Jingle Bell Rock, but using only the words "bell", "rock", and "jingle":

bell rock jingle rock
Bell jingle rock
Rock jingle rock
Bell jingle bell
Rock bell
Jingle
Rock rock bell
Jingle rock, jingle rock
Bell bell bell

Drives my wife nuts. I'd record an MP3 of me doing it if someone could find me a karaoke track.

Moving metafilter to new server

Moving on up... If all goes well, I'll start moving everything over to our new servers later today. When that happens, I'll be shutting the site off during the move (to conserve bandwidth for moving actual files). Just a heads up that the site may be down between now and say, Monday at the latest.

How about allowing anonymous questions on AskMe?

Posting something in Blue or here should have a definite link to a persona set up here. But a question? There are some questions we want asked but not have anyone know we asked them. What about an anonymous possibility?

Ask Metafilter is Born

Ask MetaFilter is born. Feel free to pose a question to other members here. Obviously those of a technical nature are going to meet with the most success, but questions outside of that realm are also good too.

I'll delete dumb questions or those that prove to be nothing but flamewars and/or goof-off fests, and if this section takes off I'll be adding more features to it (like rating what the best answer was) and move it into its own area.

Can a system be devised for users who've appreciated a post to click on an "I enjoyed this" button?

A lot of excellent, original posts, like this one from homunculus, get zero comments because users (I'm guessing) feel it's lame just to say "Thank you"; "Good post" or something equally trite, though sincere. My feeling is that outsiders, when they see 0 or 1 comment, erroneously judge that it reflects on the post and pass on. Which is a great pity.

Can't a simple system be devised whereby those users who've appreciated a post click on a "I enjoyed this" or "(this is good)" button, the result appearing much as the trackbacks do now?

spawn-of-metafilter advice site

How about a spawn-of-metafilter advice site? A site where mefites can go to give and get advice and suggestions regarding life's conundrums - technical, personal, financial, etc.? Most of us know a thing or two about something or the other, and most of us need a hand (or a shoulder, or other assorted body parts) on occasion. Who you gonna call?

Do any of you "philter" people have the inclination and bandwidth for an idea like this (Wendell? Metalifter?)? Would any of the rest of you participate? And... did I just commit metacide?

How would you like to have MeFi Music?

The MetaFilter Music channel. I've got another server setup with loads of bandwidth, so I was thinking of this as a new project/feature at MetaFilter: A place to download and stream music created by MetaFilter members. Would anyone be interested in taking part? Do that many MetaFilter members create music?

Matt has just deleted thomcatspike's latest incomprehensible post. Although some think he's just pulling our chains, many of us think that he's simply having trouble with English. If that's the case, how can we help him?

I love the thread-ends

When a MeTa thread has played its course, chattiness and jokes sometimes rush in. Although I realize it's a minority sport, I just love thread-ends. There's something ecological about using left-overs for imaginative and friendly banter. Is my excuse, anyway...

Like soon-to-be-deleted threads on MetaFilter, they serve a useful pressure-valve purpose: they redirect playfulness away from serious discussions and probably inhibit initiating purposefully chatty posts. At least for me. Is this acceptable, now that MetaTalk has become specifically Meta again? Or, at least, can it be lived with? I hope so.

Compiling a best of Metafilter

I was thinking of doing a list of "best of" threads for metafilter, on the archives page. Do you recall any of the best threads that meet the following criteria? If so, post them here as a comment.

How about by topic?

threads on:
globalization: (I know there were at least a couple great, civil, long threads about it)
prisions: (among the 5 or 6 in recent memory there must be one or two good ones)
abortion:
homosexuality:
SUVs:
death penalty:
huge news threads: (the biggest kaycee one, the seattle earthquake, and the first WTC one?)
good audience participation threads:

good weird finds? best thing for $30 threads? Just plain good threads that don't meet any of the above criteria?

If you have any favorites, post a link to them, and I'll try to organize them. Think about the best MetaFilter has to offer, and find those threads that exemplify what the site can be.

Should I filter MetaFilter (asks mathowie)?

This thread sucks. The link doesn't jump down to the story, the subject matter isn't very funny or interesting, it's just stupid. The post is too long, the comments are pretty pointless. I would delete it, but it could create more trouble than it is worth. What should be done about sub-par links? Anything? Take the good with the bad?
