I'm sure this must've been suggested, but I've read a lot of the Newsfilter Debate threads, and I can't recall specifically seeing this. If and when someone has a Newsfilter link, could the prefix "Newsfilter:" be a cue for a killfile that would block such posts from appearing on the front page for those who wished to avoid same? I for one find threads like Miers' withdrawal (even with only a one-sentence link) both appropriate and inevitable here, but I can see how others would not. If such a killfile existed and posters played nice, could this be settled once and for all?

I hate to rehash this old problem, but as of 11:00 am EST, 4/10 Front Page Posts are of the Newsfilter variety. I've noticed that since Katrina hit, the Newsfilter problem has gotten much much worse. Is there a way to stem the tide?

This is just so much more thin soup on the front page. I am not calling for deletion, but rather social censure (and some has occured within the thread).

Yet another newsfilter post featuring a topic that's being covered all over the US media but that's OK, because it concerns a bad thing involving a Republican. And if it were the same topic but involved a high profile Democrat? Then it'd be shouted down with comments about how it's a bad post.

Yesterday Scotty McClellen was the whipping boy in one of the funniest press conferences I've ever seen. The left-leaning political blog Crooks and Liars hosted a video of the best 6 minutes.
I was considering posting it, since I thought it was defintately the best thing I had seen on the web yesterday, but I didn't want to hear all the nannies scream "newsfilter" all day.
So what's the deal? Would that FPP have been kosher? And if not, what would have been the best way to share the link with the community who, if they hadn't seen it, would have probably also loved it?

Scandal Fatigue
Maybe there's a time for NewsFilter, maybe there isn't; but can we all agree that posts about politicians' sex lives are a complete waste of space and time?

Now might be a bad time, but PartisanFilter (#1, #2, #3, #4) today seems hardly "the best of the web." Particularly focused on #1 as it's just an "ActionAlert' for something that somebody thinks is Really Imporant and was already discussed in a NewsFilter FPP two days ago.

OK, I'm going to start a flamewar. This is why one-link Newsfilter FPPs from well-trafficked websites aren't evil. (The via doesn't count as part of the post for me.) The poster added context and teased the story. Bravo.

About today's earthquake/tidal wave post : today I read the New York Times site before Metafilter, but I dismissed the possibility of posting about it because of the recent snarking against linking to current news articles in front page posts.
Then I clicked on my Mefi tab to discover somebody had posted about it, and nobody's posted any "NewsFilter" gripes yet. Is it that the 0ldB33 Snarkers Committee really means "...to news articles we don't like (and you have to read our minds)", or is there a policy of ranking the human costs of natural disasters somewhere above doggie dildos after all?
As for that thread's content, I was little dismayed about the comments where people's big concern was for one dried-up (and never very good) Sci-Fi author (the movie "2001" was Kubrick's doing, y'all), but I withheld my remarks about that failure of etiquette and (as I see it) morals from the Blue -- as, as of this typing, so has everybody else.
But then of course I'm still a "n00b".... Are concerns like those I've expressed here today okay, or should I first submit my MetaTalk thread ideas to some MetaCognoscenti as well?

Election fatigue.
Election Fatigue. Could we put all the US Election links and discussion in just 1 front page post per day. Tempers are flaring, and the level of discourse is not improving. The moratorium was not successful. Besides, sometimes I want to reference a comment or link, and can't find it in the welter of election postings.

Ten of these are about United States politics and of the remaining ten, another two are somewhat related. I know it's important and all, but c'mon, enoughs enough.

Newsfilter callout
The Final Nail. I haven't been reading as much lately---I'm am hoping that the election will be over soon so the excuses are gone for shitty posts. But, there it is.
A double post. It is a Newsfilter post, that isn't even news since it has been talked about for over a decade. It is clearly does not meet the stated standard. It is a classic troll: toss a turd that you *know* will incite much argument, for no apparent reason.. It is a single-link to a newspaper. It is a blatant amount of negative campaigning even while we try to encourage voting with a new link at the top of the page.
For the love of god, it is a self-Godwinizing post!
Matt posted the very next post, 30 minutes later, so there is no chance he didn't see the post.
Yet... it remains there on the blue.
It is the piece de resitance of the the shithole Matt has willingly allowed MeFi to become. I would say amazing if it wasn't so sad....

What does the reaction to this post tell us? Myabe it's just a statistical blip, but I'm a bit surprised at the very vocal negative reaction to this bit of US-centric front-page/TV news as contrasted to the reaction to the NewsFilter posts we get every single day. Why are the naysayers in this thread right when the anti-NewsFilteristas are not? What, exactly, is different?

How about an AP news feed on the sidebar, Salon-style? It would both discourage boring cnn.com Newsfilter links, and encourage in-depth analysis posts from multiple sources.

Given that the USPTO managed to conclude in a breathtakingly fast 12 months that a patent for how to swing on a rope swing was invalid [no, I'm not making this up...], I don't see what the big problem is. Although the poster admits it's old news, this raises the question of why post it at all. It's been widely covered.
