Round Numbers!

Only a little over a year ago, anonymous had asked 1500 questions. As of today, that number has doubled. By my calculations if this trend continues then by the year 2055 life on earth will have ceased to exist!

AskMe feature suggestion

I think it'd be cool if when posting as anonymous on AskMe, you had the option to provide a separate password which would let you log in as anonymous just for the thread you're creating and post comments. The main benefit is that it would allow responders to ask for more information. The main risk I see is that someone could out themselves by accident if they forgot to log in as anonymous before commenting...

omg it's YOU!

Isn't is awfully rude to make a big deal out of non-anonymity in an AskMe thread? It's implying someone should be ashamed, isn't it?

Prenez soin de l'anonyme

In light of this art project, UbuRoivas went to 59,469 Mefites, chosen for their intarnerdiness, to analyze, translate, or reinterpret a selected anonymous AskMe. The resulting collection of responses filled the grey place at MetaFilter with beauty, music, snark & mirth. [more inside]

how to become anonymous?

wow. anonymous - despite having a bunch of issues with sex, relationships, health, work, depression, relationships, marriage, dating, jobs & love - sure has a hell of a lot of sweetheart, muse, date and spouse contacts! how can i emulate this alchemical transmutation of general leaden fuckedupness into popularity gold?

Not another asshat call-out

My comment on This thread was deleted, not because of snarkiness or asshattery, but because I doubted the scenario was real. I sincerely complimented the quality of the writing in the post, but simply pointed out (based on my own professional experience as a writer) that it sounded too much like an idyllic encounter written to engage the reader for me to be able to accept it as an actual dilemma. Jessamyn suggested that kind of comment belonged in email or the grey--since the poster is anonymous, here it is.

Wow, I can be sexual too

Threads like this make me wonder why we can't answer anonymous questions anonymously? (aside from the obvious potential for trolling)

A way to circumvent?

I recently posted an anonymous question to Metafilter (within the past week). I browsed to the 'New Question' page without thinking about the question limits because I had a new query, but to my surprise the page didn't restrict me from posting. A bug? A way to get around the question limit? Am I shortly going to be shot for pointing this out?

Anonymous users ever outed themselves on purpose?

Has an anonymous asker ever outed themselves on purpose? Some questions (like, say this one, or any one of a hundred questions about looking for a new job) seem like after some future event, a non-anonymous followup would not be out of place. Has it ever happened? Even once? Anyone want to do it now?

Bug in the tabs in AskMe.

I love the new tab feature, but there's a small bug with AskMe. When the posts are sorted by favorites, anonymous questions are credited to Anonymous Ask MetaFilter instead of the usual anonymous. No crisis, but an inconsistency that may distress some of our more sensitive members (you know who you are).

Anonymous category in AskMe?

PonyFilter: could we make "anonymous" a category at the top of the "Posts by category in the past month:" list in the sidebar on AskMe? The results, of course, would be questions from anonymous.

Dunno about other people, but I often find those the most interesting questions to browse.

AskMe: missing questions?

At present, there seem to be some askmeta questions missing, notably 41851 to 41860. I only noticed because I refreshed and a question that I *knew* was several questions down was now at the top. The missing posts don't have deletion comments on them so I'm guessing it's just a glitch of some kind?

Anonymous Ask Metafilter Archive

"Why does eating in a restaurant make me crap my pants?" and 994 other anonymous gems from the Anonymous Ask Metafilter archive. As AskMe readies for it's 1000th anonymous question, the community is hereby polled: How has the feature worked out for the community? Do you ever wonder how some threads were resolved? And at the risk of seeming too voyeuristic, has anyone ever thought about writing fiction based on the scenario in an anonymous AskMe question?

Askme callout: going further goes too far?

Actual question: As a sensitive, caring, intelligent, non-lecherous male, how do I fuck the shit out of anything that walks, regardless of race, religion, income, social stigma or species? The content of this post makes me want to vomit, but it's the tone that really makes it ick-tastic. Congrats to the original poster, at least you have the prowess to post onymously.

Disabling Favoriting of Anonymous AskMe Posts?

Displaying users who have marked Anonymous questions in AskMe as a favorite is potentially revealing of who Anonymous was in that instance. It is also potentially harmful, both to users who mark such questions as a favorite, as well as to future discourse at Metafilter in general. So I suggest that we remove the list at the start of the thread of those who marked an Anonymous question as a favorite. [more inside]

Anonymous Replies for AskMe For Several Hours?

Anonymous posting: time-limited cookies to enable anonymous to reply to their own threads for N hours? Perhaps tied to logins? It seems like the "anonymous" nom de plume really only needs to be a setting that is applied when a thread is marked as such and the original poster is replying. Since most of these questions are for personal, medical, or other advice that usually need more input (perhaps to triangulate its position), it seems useful.

Why is this AskMe anonymous?

Anonymous questions in AskMe, as I understand it, are for those questions which are of a delicate nature, could cause serious embarrassment, result in legal trouble, or cause some sort of other harm.

So how is a question about what tattoo to get deemed worthy of anonymization? [MI]

Can we please stop questioning the need for anonymous AskMe posters to be anonymous?

Can we please stop questioning the need for anonymous AskMe posters to be anonymous? The posters can't respond, and I find Matt does a decent job of filtering out the questions that have no possible necessity for anonymity. Maybe you can't think of a reason, but then again, it's not your life at issue.

Anonymous askme derails: a reboot?

Umm, yeah. I realize this callout is pointless since the the poster in question is so blatantly abusive and off-topic, but I thought it might be necessary to create this thread so the original anonymous poster could have an additional thread in AskMeFi so we could help him.

anon needs to be able to respond

Matt, threads like this underscore the need for the anon poster to have the ability to respond in his or her thread. I'm sure that it's not a trivial amount of work for you - what would it take to make this happen, and what can we do to support your efforts?

I think that this is one of the most important features on the to-do list. It must be so painful for the poster to be unable to respond in many cases.

The AskMe front page seems to lag in updating with published questions.

what's the policy for/function of an anon question?

what's the policy for/function of an anon question? i've been using metafilter for awhile, but have never used it. since isaw about seven anon questions in a row, i'm curious: how long do they usually get to take approved? as i understand it, they are hand-screened? so, is it a few days...a week? and, do they count towards your question of the week (they have to, it would be too easily abusable, i guess...just one of the sentences in the explanation seems to mean that).

sorry for the confusion -_- just one of those things i never quite got around to figuring out.

AnonAskMe often poses embarrassing personal questions

AnonAskMe often poses embarrassing personal questions. Sometimes I withhold my opinion because, if you're too mousy to attach your name to your question, I don't think you deserve people's signed replies. Does anyone else agree?

A gmail account for anonymous askme followups

I created a gmail account for anonymous askme followups. The username is anon.metafilter and the password is metafilter. Anymore can post there. Just log in at gmail.google.com and send email from that account TO that account (anon.metafilter@gmail.com).

Since gmail allows tags, you can tag your messages. You can also reply to them (or other users can reply to them) and gmail will automatically keep all the replies together.

Why hasn't someone already done this? Is it a bad idea? (No one will be forced to use it). If it's a bad idea, why is it a bad idea? Of course, it could (perhaps will) get utterly chaotic with people deleting each others posts, etc.

Lets see what happens.

Anonymous for a day

I've written a Greasemonkey script that does pretty much what leftcoastbob suggested here.

It adds a few refinements: the replacement name is "Poster" for the Poster and "Comment N" for commenters, where N is the number of their first comment in the currently viewed thread, so if the same commenter posts more than once in the thread, all his comments have the same replacement name.

Anonymous Bursts

Why do anonymous posts seem to come in bursts on AskMeFi? It seems that more often than not, 3 or 4 anonymous questions pop up in a row (for instance: today 1, 2, 3) Do anonymous questions sit in an approval queue before being posted to the main site, or is this phenomena purely coincidental?
