What is MetaFilter's Astrological sign?
Discuss.
MetaDragons 🐉
I love dragons. They're one of my favorite creatures. There are many different types of dragons. Some mythical, some still living today. From literature, film & television, animation, & video-games, table-top games. There are many different breeds: chromatic or metalic? lightweight or heavyweight? Would you ride on their backs? Maybe you'd learn some magic. There have been some amazing posts on the blue and green related to dragons that are worth checking out. The conversation is open to any and all dragon-related subjects. Let's discuss dragons. RROOAARRR!!!!
sole artifact left to explain humanity
Regarding the recent one-man Godzilla film that was posted over on the blue, MCMikeNamara commented:
If this was the sole artifact left to explain humanity, it would be impossible to truly explain without the cultural context, but I honestly don't care and would happily nominate it to be the sole artifact to explain humanity.<>>Has me thinking what the rest of the community would choose, so let's open it up to debate. What would you choose as the sole artifact left to explain humanity? I'm thinking that MCMikeNamara is on the right track with this one-man Godzilla film. Stay safe everyone.
MetaAnniversary: FizzRecordings? nightFizz?
On this exact date, one year ago, I messaged Nightrecordings via MeMail to discuss this post about Serena Williams at the US Open. One thing led to another and...we're now married. I wouldn't have the love of my life without this community. I want to thank everyone here who made that possible. Apologies for the selfishness of this MetaTalk. I love you Nightrecordings! ❤️
Just Share Something Good
It's been a difficult week. Let's talk about something that isn't related to the news or a source of the never ending stream of nightmare fuel we encounter on the rest of the web. Just share something good with the MetaFilter community. We all could do with a story that brings a smile, or a laugh. Maybe share a photo of a cute pet or baby, or tell us about that slice of pie you enjoyed, whatever it is, just share something good. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. We're all on this rock together.
MetaScreenshot
What does your digital space look like? What type of wallpaper do you use? Do you have a lot of shortcuts/icons scattered everywhere? Or maybe you're more minimalist and you need everything pinned to your taskbar or dock. Or do you consume MetaFilter from your iPad or mobile device? We all type/tap from different places, for those who are game, please share a screenshot. Just being curious. Cheers.
MetaThanksgiving
It's Thanksgiving in America, a day to give thanks, spend time with family, friends, & loved ones and share a warm meal. 2018 has not always been the most easy of years to live through, I thought it'd be nice to have a place to share thanks, to acknowledge that we made it another year on this planet, that we did it together. I'm thankful for my family, my friends, my partner, and all of you. I'm thankful that MetaFilter exists. Cheers.
MetaBack2School
End of another long week filled with all kinds of awful politics/news. So let's talk about something else. It's that time of year where so many students are heading back to school. Maybe you're going back to school to finish off a degree/diploma/certification. Maybe you're shopping for first day of school clothes for your MetaChild. Maybe you're taking some art classes at the local college/community center. Maybe you have some fond memories of this time of year and that new school supplies/bag excitement. School is in session, let's talk. :)
MetaMedium
How do you consume MetaFilter? Is it on your mobile device/phone? Are you mostly at your work/home computer? Tablet, laptop, kindle? Just wondering how the community primarily loads this site up.
MetaSnackFilter
Let's lighten the mood. It's the end of the week and I want to hear about something fun and not about politics. Tell me about a really awesome snack/food you just ate. What you eating?
MetaHeatWave
A fair number of countries/places around the world are experiencing extreme heat and weather conditions. I wanted to have a place for us to check-in with each other. Remember to reach out to your neighbors, friends, family, and loved ones to make sure they're ok. People who are older, as well as our MetaPets, should also be given extra consideration as they're particularly vulnerable to this kind of heat. A reminder to drink lots of water and find some shade and/or air conditioning if possible. Feel free to share your own tips/tricks for keeping cool.
MetaGoodness
Tell me something good. Something happy. Maybe it's a thing you did. Maybe it's a thing that was done for you. Share something good with me and the rest of us. I feel like we need some of that. There's been a lot of serious happening the last few days and I want to just hear something good, positive, and light. I like this place and all of you. Be kind to each other, love yourself. Tell me something good.
MetaWheelhouse
What is your Meta "thing" so to speak. We know some people 🙄 post a lot about video games. I was looking at my profile and surprised but not surprised to realize I've made 211 posts with the tag: videogames and 161 posts with the tag: literature. What are your top tags? What do you find yourself posting the most about?

Happy 10 Years! This is me saying thank you for dealing with my idiosyncrasies. My video-game obsessed posts, my overly polite Canadian need to apologize. I want to say thank you to all the moderators, developers, members, lurkers, friends & acquaintances, the entire community. You make living online worthwhile. This place truly is 'Best of the Web'. Here's hoping for 10 more! Cheers.
MetaSluggishness
Is anyone else experiencing instability with MetaFilter today? I've had a fair number of time-outs and slow-downs with site loading and refreshes. It seems only limited to this particular site. Just checking in.
MetaJokes Podcast 'April Fool's Edition'
Back in January we had a year end call-in show/podcast. MeFites were able to call a line that Cortex set up to record seasonal greetings and well-wishes. A fun way to connect and listen to all of the wonderful people that make up our community. A number of MeFites called in and told some humorous jokes/asides. I previously mentioned how it might be fun to have a specific call-in episode for just jokes that would then be released on April Fools' Day (April 1). I realize it's a bit of behind the scenes work for our moderators, but if they're open to it, I think it would be fun. Let's discuss whether we can make that happen.
A whale of a Meta!
Halloween Jack posed a question in response to aniola's wonderful post about whales and literature.
“So, can any of you boffins on the blue tell me if there's a longer post than this one?”I thought it'd be nice to have a place to discuss that subject and share some of the longer posts that have managed to hit MetaFilter.
Eponyappropriate Timing
I made this post about trees/plants in video games and lazycomputerkids made this wonderful comment. And then Joyce Kilmer Rest Area, Imaginary Jersey Turnpike responded and it was like the comment gods had lined up. Searching for other examples of these types of perfectly lined up comments on the Meta.
Right Post at the Right Time
I had a pretty terrible yesterday and a somewhat grumpy today. Towards the end of my work shift I switched tabs over to MetaFilter and I saw Wordshore's delightful post on the new Animal Crossing game. And it's cheered me right up. Something was just right about this post and it hit me at the right time. I thought I'd share my joy and gratitude about that here. Feel free to share your own stories of posts that hit you at the right time. Maybe its the linked subject or the comments, but something just worked and it made your day like this one made mine. Thank you Wordshore. :)
MetaWhat? MetaWho? MetaHuh?
I wanted to know what parts of this community do you sometimes forget, neglect, or outright ignore? Maybe it's lack of interest or maybe it's just something you keep forgetting exists? FanFare? Jobs? AskMeFi? Labs? Chat? Podcast? Are you only on the blue? What part of MetaFilter is pushed to the side?
You're awesome MetaFilter. Best of the web indeed!
There have been some amazing posts hitting the front page lately and I just wanted to have a place to say thanks. Also, it's an excuse to have a thread where we can just be positive and nice to each other. You're awesome and I like this place and I'm always finding something new and interesting. So thank you to everyone. Those who post and those who comment. And even those who lurk. :)
When Your Post Lines Up Nicely With the Next Post
Right now on the front page we have a discussion about the ethics of owning pets. And immediately after that is a post about awesome cat-bros. I love it when stuff like this lines up, intentional or not. Do you recall any of your favourite cosmically timed/sequential MetaFilter posts from throughout MetaHistory?
What's your online genealogy?
I stumbled upon this tweet recently:
“what's your online genealogy. mine is: digimon forums moderator -> rpg maker - > somethingawful -> lf -> twitter” ~ @immolationsIt got me thinking about the various online communities I've been a part of in my digital life, the different digital phases I've posted, shared, & tweeted my way through. Where does MetaFilter fall into your own digital history? What is your online genealogy?
The Week You Joined MetaFilter
This recent MetaTalk comment brought up some past bit of history, specifically posts that occurred during the first week of MetaFilter. It had me thinking. Were there any standout or significant posts that you recall from the week that you joined MetaFilter?
Blue or Green
So I have an article that I want to post, but the article is essentially a question regarding how people read. Abebooks had a blog post about it and the Guardian picked up on this issue as well. Should I post this on MetaFilter or under AskMefi? No matter where I post it, people will offer up their own preferences for how they read a book. As I see it, this post would be more appropriate in the Green, but I'm not certain.
