Deleting MetaTalk threads?

Deleting MetaTalk threads?

Deleting blue threads, I understand and support. But deleting a metatalk thread is unexpected. Of course I'm not on the grey much. Maybe this happens all the time. This has been the first time in a very long time I've been interested in anything going on here so maybe I've just not noticed.

I would think a MetaTalk thread might be closed, but deleted too? That seems counter to what the grey is for, why it even exists. Maybe I just don't understand.

The grey is to discuss things you shouldn't discuss/don't belong on the blue. So now things in the grey are to be slashed as well?

I would prefer it not to be, but of course it is not my say. But I would like clarification, because there are other threads in the grey that have gone FAR BEYOND what I can only assume caused the demise of the affected one and survived.

(Deleted thread purposefully not mentioned so as to perhaps increase the lifespan of this question).

Does Matt remove posts from the archives?

Does Matt remove posts from the archives? I've been trying to find a couple of old threads from a few months ago, a link about the whilstler devices that people are putting in the tailpipes of thier cars and an interview with a guy that had one in his car. I've searched thru the archives post by post and used the search but it seems to have disappeared. Is it possible that it has been dumped for some reason? Is this common? I cant even seem to find the post from earlier this month that had the old GI Joe PSA. What's up Matt?

Link changed; cool/not cool?

Deleting a thread is one thing, but is it right to change a link on an (obviously high-profile and emotional subject) FPP in someone else's name, even if you mention that in the thread? Personally, if it were my post: delete it, but don't change the link under my name.

If you're gonna delete this, you better delete this. Fair is fair.

What happened to my Black Friday post?

I posted a thread about retail price plans for major retailers being publsished on websites ahead of time. The retailers were ticked. The story questioned if this was a freedom of speech issue or did the retailers have a right to demand the information be removed.
The thread was removed. Was it the subject or the link to an audio news story?

Why was this deleted?

Uh... why was this deleted? I can only assume, thanks to Grangousier's sarcastic comment, that it was deemed to be a dupe of this, but if that is the reason, someone needs to look again. While the original post was commenting on the removal of Ellen's ad from Apple's site (it's since come back), there have been no other posts about Ellen's ad and Ellen herself.

Apart from anything else, ripping articles from the front page without informing the poster and telling them why is not a good way to encourage new users to post good links. It's just demoralizing.

Spooky. Senile? Deleted.

Pretty sure it wasn't a senior moment. Rather, I think I just had an Orwellian moment. What happened to the thread at www.metafilter.com/mefi/20692, regarding Kuwaiti opinions? It now says "...a non-existent post, or one that was deleted for various reasons."

Spooky.

Middle East News

Oi! I'm a sucker for middle-east threads (and regrettably get irrationally wound up in them) (especially Israel/palestine ones), but the sheer number of similar front page posts in recent days has been exhausting and exhaustive. The topic is covered on every major news site.

What happened to "posting something interesting I've found on the web"?

Why did you deleted the CD swap thread Matt?

I'm curious. Why did you deleted the CD swap thread Matt?

Given the chance to respond...

Why was this deleted before it even got off the ground [2 posts]?

Glen Reynolds' Instapundit links to a Meryl Yourish post countering a comment by our own mediareport. I tend to disagree with MR on the Middle East, but seeing as how MeFi is where he expresses himself, it seems appropriate he should have the opportunity to defend himself here.
(This is not an I/P thread, this is a meta-I/P thread. Be nice.)

I thought that joemaller had a good point giving mediareport - and other MeFites - the chance to respond.

Rio post no different from Apple posts

I disagree with the deletion of the post comparing the Rio with other portable MP3 players. We see new Apple product announcements every couple of weeks here; this was no different.

Human cloning story cloned from prior post

Apologies in advance to Matt but I'm curious why my human cloning story got pulled. Is it because it was a double post? Or is because it has been conclusively debunked? Or did it cross some other line?

Why was Arafat photo deleted?

I think it's uncouth that the 'arafat' front page post was deleted. It was a photograph of a moment captured. Like any moment captured. Except it was explosive. Why must a candid photo of Yasser Arafat under siege be purged from Mefi's memory?

I haven't seen any double posts recently

Curious, as this is the only one I I've actually run across. It seems that double-posts have been very rare recently. Or have they just been getting caught that quickly?

I/P: look, we are behaving

I think it would be nice if today's Palestine/Israel thread didn't vanish (as per mathowie's recent MeTa post, stating that he is going to delete them all until further notice), at least not before the name-calling starts. The post itself is a bit of a bait, but so far the responses have been well-thought-out, even-handed, and intelligent.

After deletion, still waiting 24 hours?

If a post is pulled because it is deemed inappropriate(I assume mine went because the subject matter was too close to one you don't wish discussed) are we still subject to the 24-hour rule? Just wondering.....

"poof" unexpected, explanation demanded

What was the problem with the post about the soccer player giving the finger up? I was really surprised to see that one go "poof." It wasn't high art, but it didn't seem like it was out of line.

It was a double? That hurts my feelings

Though it may make someone more hesitant to participate in the future, unless we are given a way to delete our own messages (or an easy way to alert someone who can), telling us that we've posted a duplicate link is nothing but a condescending tactic of metafilter bullies.

Was it something that I said?

I thought this post would be more appropriate in MetaTalk, and I mentioned that in comments, twice. Both comments are gone now. Was it something that I said?

Comment Limits Per Thread?

Now that each subscriber is limited to starting one thread a day, isn't it time to limit the number of comments per thread that a subscriber can post? With unlimited commentary, it's just unfocused chat.

What happened to our questions to Osama?

Okay... what happened to the painfully funny and popular thread from earlier today that had us offering our own questions to Osama?

I don't normally ask... I attribute any missing thread to a well-deserved deletion by Matt. But I can't imagine what about the thread would have warranted a deletion.

Why was my post deleted? (Tom Gutting, City Sun)

Yea I want to know why you guys deleted my post. Some people get away with posting porn sites but I can't post a controversial thread that Tom Gutting wrote in the Houston City Sun. Geez who woulda thought!

Can someone educate me?

I don't think Bas67's recent deleted post linking to the Onion should have been deleted. I think that was good stuff. I was going to post the comment:

They should translate that text into the appropriate language(s), put it on leaflets, and drop it throughout Afganistan, Syria, Lebanon and the West Bank. It might make certain individuals think twice.

Was it really beyond the Pale? Can someone educate me? Or was it the material around the post on that page (which I didn't read)?

Should I filter MetaFilter (asks mathowie)?

This thread sucks. The link doesn't jump down to the story, the subject matter isn't very funny or interesting, it's just stupid. The post is too long, the comments are pretty pointless. I would delete it, but it could create more trouble than it is worth. What should be done about sub-par links? Anything? Take the good with the bad?

Where did the post for "Is this the next All Your Base...?" go? Why did it leave? Sorry to sound paranoid, but with all the turmoil lately, I'm really curious about the disappearance of this seemingly innocuous post...

Does this need to be moderated?

Man, them's fighting words. In Matt's words, we're all in this together and we're self-policing. Does any policing need to go on in these threads or similar instances?

this is not a personal shot at aaron, although he is involved in both altercations.

i think we should take more care to limit our disparaging personal comments. what do you think?

More moderation for you

I've deleted mspansel's threads and banned the account from posting again. I've been deleting more posts than ever lately, and I think it's a necessary evil to having such an open posting policy. I've changed my editing tools, so deleting posts or editing someone's bad html is a lot easier now, so expect to see more admin stuff being done in the future. My hope is that things stay on track this way.

Starting a QA Dept

Soon enough it may be time for Papa Meta to hand out bright orange "Board Monitor" vests and send a group of hard-hitting patrollers out into the world, or at least Metafilter. Perhaps this is a question for Matt to pose, but I would be interested in seeing what means people can think of for keeping Metafilter the quality discussion area that it is. (please excuse me if this was previously discussed, I can't seem to remember it being a topic before...)
