Deletion Reasons

I know this has been requested before, and I understand that it may be an extremely time-consuming feature, but please, if possible Matt, could you give us reasons for deletion in MeTa and AskMeFi? I really think that it helped in MeFi and will probably help prevent repeated mistakes made in AskMeFi.

Maybe some html tags should be disabled.

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to disable some HTML tags to prevent ...poster shock as it were. I've noticed the 'comment by x' nested inside a comment by 'y' in several threads already, and there seems little to prevent a similar slight of hand on an actual FPP. Too nitpicky?

Updated Slogans

Metafilter: the plastic.com it's OK to like.

It seems like metafilter has had the same few slogans on the main page for a long time. People always post funny suggestions for mefi taglines in the the threads, but they're never adopted.

My request: Matt, geton the ball and and some new taglines.

How can I avoid making double posts?

Drat! Foiled again! If anyone needs a pony that helps prevent doubleposts, it's me. I search (google) and search (MeFi), come up empty, post, and soon discover that I've been had. We've talked about such a pony that uses a keyword, category, or subject engine... how's it coming?

Sidebar Newsfeed?

How about an AP news feed on the sidebar, Salon-style? It would both discourage boring cnn.com Newsfilter links, and encourage in-depth analysis posts from multiple sources.

FPPs as unordered lists in html

Matt, could you make the FPPs be unordered lists in the HTML? I want to be able to use the site with elinks in graphical mode. Just about everything else is kickass, and it loads lightning fast, but all the FPPs end up scrunched together and are very difficult to eyeball-parse. I think this would be a Good Thing, not just for links users, but for general browser cross-compatibility.

What do people think about polling the membership?

What do people think about polling the membership? A feature that would allow Matt (or others) to provide questions on popular issues/ideas/songs or whatever and get a sense of what the community thinks. The obvious example is topical stuff, e.g. who will the Metafilter users vote for in the election? This idea could either enhance the community, or divide it. The biggest negative is that statistics are misleading, they can polarize things, and they give people easy examples when they are generalizing, and that sucks. But, it would be fascinating to know how the community stands on a given issue. I still think this is the best community on the internet and the most interesting, and I think many people would like to know how we feel on this or that. If it were to happen in the style of this site, it would be a once every few months kind of thing. A side feature could be to have all discussion on that issue reside on that page (get them off the front).

Anonymous post or comment pony

Secret pony request. I was wondering if it could be made possible to obsfucate a username in AskMetafilter? There have been times, and I imagine I'm not the only one, that I would have liked to post a question anonymously. This could be for a variety of reasons, ranging from the ethical to the legal, but I have lots of questions that I may not want linked to my user page forever.

Can we have karma in AskMe?

Ask MeFi Karma - I think it would be cool that if you are reading the comments of an AskMeFi thread that you created, you could rate an answer by granting or taking away a karma point from the answerer. In this way, there will be a new mechanism of MeFi elitism to encourage constructive replies.

"Pre" Tags

HTML "Pre" Tag Pony. Entering Computer Code in AskMetafilter is hard. I've tried to use the "pre" tag, and just putting the code in, but the MeFi Comments Post Processor insists on putting "br" tags on the end of each line. This results in double spaced code. Is it possible for the Comments Post Processor to not generate "br" tags if inside a "pre" tag block.

I'm wondering if anyone's considered a sort of "MeFi Resources Pool".

I'm wondering if anyone's considered a sort of "MeFi Resources Pool". By that I mean a site where members can go and list things that they have access to and then when another member needs something they can check the pool to see if anyone else can help. For example, if someone needed a new X and someone else worked in an X store then person A could get X for a good deal and person B helps out another member. And, it just so happens that person A owns a book store, etc etc. Is this just a ridiculous idea because the person who owns the electronics store is gonna have 50 people asking for a good deal on a television or is this something that may be useful and if so, what's the best way for something like this to work?

Time Zones and Cookies

Nearly a year and a half ago, number 1 gave us customizable time zones for Metafilter. I love it. I have innumerable cookie issues regarding resetting it all the time. But, that's not what I'm complaining about. (I'm not really complaining, either, just making a point, I guess..) In his original post, mathowie said, "MetaTalk, I'll eventually get to." As far as I can tell, it hasn't been gotten to yet. A quick search of Metatalk threads hasn't yielded results and I can't get the time zone to change even with a cookie reset. In addition, since AskMeFi is a subsection or something of MeTa, perhaps I could remind our fearless leader that that could be done as a part of the planned, future, wonderful AskMe upgrade. Just a thought.

Why not have some kind of "recent posts" sidebar, or the like?

Why not have some kind of "recent posts" sidebar, or the like? As it is, ongoing conversations fade out in mid-thought as they go down then off the page, as people stop checking them. No doubt someone will remark that that would be bringing Mefi closer to some kind of message board, but is that really such a bad thing?

User Census

Hi everyone, longtime lurker, first time poster. During my days in the wilderness poking my nose in here and reading religiously, I've always wondered if there had ever been a "metapoll" conducted of the membership. If there has, please excuse my ignorance (I couldn't find any mention of it). If not, I think it would be the greatest thing ever! Politics, favourite music, movie, country of origin, languages spoken. I'd love to know more about the gang in a non privacy-violating way...Not that I'd know how to go about doing it. Any suggestions?

Can we have a search function for AskMe?

Matt, I'm in love with ask mefi. I have ideas for questions that I eventually want to ask (or research) but I want to make sure that it hasn't been asked before. Can we please have a "search" ask (rather than getting results from MetaTalk or the main filter?)

Could there be a feature that automatically posts the nude picture of the poster when a disparaging comment about anyone's physical appearance is made?

Builtin Search Metafilter Functionality Request

(I couldn't find my answer in a search of meta-talk) Are there plans to make ask metafilter searchable? I love the site and would find it a very valuable reference tool if I could search previous posts. It would also be cool if posts were classified by category.

Marking questions as answered

Another AskMe suggestion. How about a way for someone who has posted a question to go in and add a marker which says that their question has been answered which would then appear next to the 'comments' marker on the front page, which would then offer the ability to filter out all the questions which have been answered so that the benevolant can concentrate on those which haven't.

RSS for AskMe

The MeFi RSS feed works great. While I can envision the reason(s) for ommitting this feature for metaTalk, wouldn't it make sense to have on for AskMeFi ?

Link to AskMe

Ask MetaFilter is currently only available to those of us who come to MetaTalk. Since it's probably the best thing on MeFi since the sliced-bread thread, wouldn't it be an elementary courtesy to extend the service (and information) to the blue-only crowd? Is it really so marvellous that it deserves to be kept for us aficionados alone? Fwiw, I think we could use the extra minds and souls. Why not include a link (plus sidebar mention) on the main page? Or is it meant to be an insiders' secret? This, imho, is just wrong!

AskMe Front Page

Given that Ask Metafilter had 40 questions posted yesterday (more than the number of posts to Metafilter proper, in fact), would it be possible to see more than 25 questions on the front page at a time? It seems kind of silly to have to go to the archives for questions posted earlier during the same day. Adjunct question: how's the server holding up under the onslaught of posts?

Making MeFi Experts

Perhaps we should make Ask MetaFilter a Clydesdale instead of a pony: if user profiles included a means of categorizing one's expertise, we'd be able to have Ask MetaFilter automatically email appropriate questions to the experts; we'd be able to hunt down an expert for 1:1 communication; we'd be able to create some sort of synergy.

Pony: color-coded user names

Colored usernames. How about a per-user defined option to have usernames show up in custom colors to keep track of users I want to read (red) and users I don't (gray) and everyone else (default). Or some other way to highlight when a user I really like posts without having to memorize lots of names.

UBB to HTML

So I can't be the only person consistently hitting preview and correcting all my UBB to HTML. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard to automagically correct the standardest of standard UBB ([b] [i] [u] are pretty much the only ones I ever use) codes to HTML. So, I'm requesting it as a feature.

Request for Watching Threads

How hard would it be to have a way to keep track of threads you are particularly interested in but have not posted in? I use the pulldown feature to keep track of my commented threads, but there are other threads that I would enjoy keeping up with-problem is I forget about them.
I guess I had in mind something like a checkoff box or something. Would this be hard to do?
(please don't suggest I comment in these threads too. I blab enough around here as it is.)

Can we have a google news search for "metafilter"?

My Little Pony: In addition (or instead of) Blogroots, an RSS feed to a google news search for "metafilter" in the MetaTalk sidebar. Not all big-media shoutouts require discussion, but it's still cool to know about them: and why go through all the trouble of typing when a robot can do this for you?
