Open comments in a New Window?
why isn't there an option to open comments on a new window? we have the option to open links to a new window, but i always end up having to right click comments.
Pony request: "reset" link for recent posts/comments count?
It's pony time! Well, maybe less of a pony, and more of a Falabella. Anyway, what about a little link on the front page of MeTa that resets your threads and posts update? I often return every half hour or so (I know...) and the count doesn't reset...
Asterisk for Deleted Threads
OK, it's been suggested before in passing, but I can't find an actual feature-request thread, so I'm going ahead and asking: When comments are deleted from a thread, can there be some residue, maybe an asterisk, maybe an icon, indicating that there used to be a comment at that point, so later non-deleted references to said comment aren't so confusing?
Navigation links to top?
Having the « Older... | ...Newer » links at the top of a thread [to the left of the date] as well as the bottom would be handy..?
I haven't seen the search time out for months.
I haven't seen the search time out for months. Could we afford to set "since day one" as the default?
baby weblogs like Crunchlandfilter, Miguelfilter, Foldfilter, and Sudamafilter
If each user's page of posted links had comment counts and an RSS feed, Metafilter would instantly turn into a community with hundreds of baby weblogs like Crunchlandfilter, Miguelfilter, Foldfilter, and Sudamafilter.
Lofi for Metatalk?
Is there an equivalent of lofi.mefi for metatalk? Miguel's rambling novel-writing-question seems to have been canned, and I want to see a) What Matt said about it, and b) what all the snippy comments after mine looked like. How about it?
I want to delete my account
in most communities, you can leave when you're ready to move on.
The timeout setting is pretty low right now.
These days there's enough traffic on MeFi (which is a good thing) that it takes a while, what with interruptions and such, to get through all the new links, comments, and new comments on previously-seen threads. So Matt, could you increase the timeout setting (or make it configurable on the User Page) for deciding when to update the new comments count? Thanks!
Bad Markup
Goofy, wrong or misused HTML breaks the style sheet and ruins the appearance of the rest of a thread. I don't know if this is an IE/Mac only experience, but in any case it really makes reading the rest of a thread difficult, which stinks when the topic is interesting. I may be asking for an elephant gun to kill an ant, but is there some way to alert people when they've got misformed markup in their post?
Deleted posts search feature?
This thread for googling for WMDs has come up I think three times now. (And will probably be deleted before most of you read this post.) As It took me quite a while to locate via search where the page in question was first posted, and this mistake could be made with similar distributed content is there any way that we can have the search feature include deleated posts? If it did this person would have probably seen the other two deleted posts and not posted this. Perhaps a checkbox on the search page for 'include deleted posts'.
New Activity in Dormant Threads
Sorry if this has been requested before, but... some lame front-page posts on recently-covered topics (e.g., Blair Hornstine) might be avoided if there were a way to alert interested users of new activity in dormant threads. (more inside)

Request to update MetaTalk posting page for IE.
Dear Matt: given that most people here use IE, when will you modernize the MetaTalk posting page? You've known for ages that anyone hitting the "Back" button to edit their post will lose everything because of IE browser settings.
When will it be as easy as the MetaFilter one? How is someone who knows no HTML supposed to post to MetaTalk with the appropriate links, bold and italic emphases and whatever?

Link check to prevent double posts?
Probably been mentioned before, but how hard would it be to link check on a post to ensure no double posting? You could even mock the poor soul!
A Pony made of (Kevin) Bacon
There are so many interesting relationships here. I would enjoy a search function that queried two users and parsed them for shared threads. The output would contain all the threads that both user A and user B posted to--possibly with other criteria, such as key words? If this has been suggested before, I haven't been able to find it.
zipcode query pony wanted
I respect the new zipcode geotracker as much as the next guy, but I think it would be that much cooler if there were a page where we could enter a zipcode and see the users around it. I'm road-tripping next week, and it would be awesome to see which of my favorite MeFites lie en route.
Logging in direct to main?
Is there a reason why when logging in one isn't redirected to the index page? Having to click the link everytime is annoying and it would seem better to be automatically redirected. I did a quick search here on MetaTalk, but saw nothing about it...
Is this a pony we can do without?
Good point quonsar. Matt, is it possible this is a pony that we really don't want?
How to update a closed thread?
FollowupFilter? I was using the subject of this thread as an example in an email today, and while researching it I noticed that just today there was an update to this story. The original thread is locked, but I not sure this is FPP worthy.

Email Reminder Request
this isn't a request for matt, really (i know there are lots of those) - i think anyone could do this with a little screen-scraping and not too much server load. how about a daily (or 6/12 hourly? or step-wise, every 1, 4, 16, 64 replies...) email service to tell you if there have been any replies to threads you've posted on. this would be for those of us who only post a couple of comments or less a day - helps keep you in the discussion without having to run through threads checking for possible responses.
Can we have an alternative frontpage where all the posts which mention Iraq are filtered out?
Can we have an alternative frontpage where all the posts which mention Iraq are filtered out? I'm getting a bit tired of this war thing and would like to enjoy my MetaFilter Iraq free. Something like www.metafilter.com/noiraq.mefi would be greatly appreciated!
What got nuked?
Invoking the Lazyfilter again...How cool would it be to set up the AntiMetafilter somewhere? A blog that consists solely of the posts that got deleted from the big blue, complete with mathowie's reason for nuking.
Or am I the only one who idly runs my mouse over the links on the front page, seeking out the missing post numbers so I can see who got shot down for what?
If I am, I'm OK with that, just a little weirded out by myself.

Why can't I subscribe to the MeFi front page posts via email (either digest or real-time)?
I don't understand why most blogs don't also allow at least read-only email subscription.

MeFi Detectives go Pro
I have an idea for a new addition to the MeFi family of products... MoJo!
MetaonlineJournalism - A subsection of MetaFilter (like MetaTalk) where stories or rumors that need further investigation, research, or verification are actively worked on by webloggers, ideally working together to determine the truth of the matter.
This, I think, is increasingly important, since MeFi posts fade out a lot quicker than they used to, due to posting frequency. MetaOnlineJournalism posts might be around long enough to determine the truth of the matter, and would be presented in an environment that would ideally be far more about collaborative reporting, and far less about flaming.

Login and return to where we started?
This is a very small and unimportant request, but maybe it would be easy to implement. When we login, could we then return to the page we logged in from rather than jump to the main index? Or perhaps get a choice of the two? I only login at work when I want to post; maybe I'm in the minority here.
Can we change our passwords?
Is there a way for a user to change their account's password? No pressing need or anything, just wondering, as I like to change my various passwords from time to time.
External links in new tab
Would it be possible to have external links open in a new tab in my browser, instead of a new window or the same window? I don't know if this feature is available outside of Mozilla/Netscape, but it would save me a lot of right-clicking. Or am I the only one who uses tabbed browsing?
Distilling Metafilter
I have an idea for a blog and wanted to get some feedback. Metafilter often creates great threads with each poster adding additional links and insights but one has to dig through the noise and do a lot of reconstruction to get the good bits. The idea for the blog would be a meta summary of certain threads pulling all the good links, quotes and ideas together in single post, a sort of "best-of" with appropriate footnoting for recognition of contribution. This would take some writing skill. The summary thread can then be TB'd on a separate blog so readers of metafilter would have access and because it is a "best-of" it would have more permanence and a chance for additional contributions. Thoughts?
Does Metafilter have a status page?
In the category of "give-Matt-more-work", does metafilter have a status page for when it goes down? If it doesn't, I'm thinking that it would be a nice feature for those of us (most of us, I'm guessing) who are chomping at the bit to find out what might be ailing metafilter and when it will come back online. Of course, the status page would have to live on a different server so that it doesn't go down at the same time.
Plaintext MeFi?
Is the plain-text version of Metafilter available through a URL hack or a GET request? i.e. can I get the plain-text version without changing my profile? That would be useful for Palm and other small-device versions, esp. for comment pages...
Textbox more constricting than tighty-whiteys
Could we make the Post a Link page's description field be a bit bigger? On my most recent FPP post, I found that I was using a lot of markup (really the first time I had done markup this extensive for a FPP) and having trouble making code changes/editing content because the textbox just seems a bit constricting. Also, this could be helpful for Metatalk as well.
Users in RSS
Could we have the name of the poster in the RSS feed?

MeFi Search for Exact Phrases Using Speech Marks?
Mefi search functionality and double posts. Using google extensively I've developed the habit of searching for phrases by using speech marks in order to retrieve more specific results. Metafilter search doesn't seem to support this feature, and partly as a result I made a double post, after searching for "moon trees" instead of moon trees. I'll know for next time, but could more double posts result from other new users with the same habit? Possibly.
Preventing reposts of deleted stories
This dangling baby . . . it vibrates? Every time Matt kills a "Jacko's dangling baby" post, another pops up to replace it. We've talked about this before, but I think the (general) question needs to be raised: What, if anything, can be done to prevent reposting deleted stories? It's been pointed out that posters may not know that they're posting something that has been deleted before because, um, it's been deleted before! (And with wacky news like this, there can be any number of sources for the same story, sorry.) Short of deleting the story every time it pops up, is there a better solution?
Warnings for FPPs
[Bracket Etiquette]: For the benefit of users old and new and Metafilter usability in general, what warnings are considered essential or helpful when posting to the front page? [Possible list inside.]
Metafilter Remixed
Metafilter: Remixed -- a collaborative filter for MeFi. Several people have suggested in the past some sort of "[this is good]" button people could use to vote for excellent posts; I know Matt's busy, so I went ahead and made one. Let me know if you find any problems with it.
Be careful what you wish for
Bug: If you set your prefs to show 99 days of posts, the front page shows 99 days of posts, thereby taking forever and making the server pretty unhappy, I bet. There should be some max built in there.
Suggestion: Set login cookie domains to ".metafilter.com" (note the two periods), so logins will work at metafilter.com, www.metafilter.com, and metatalk.metafilter.com.

Login redirect back to where I logged in from pls
Often, I will be reading MeFi on a work or other computer and am not logged in. When I see a thread that I'd like to contribute to, I log in from the "Login" link on that thread...which dumps me back out on the front page. Is there any way to have the Login link on a comments page dump back to that particular page after you've logged in?
2 Feature Requests
Question #1: Are there any plans for a Mozilla Calendar/iCal plugin which would state the tentative dates for future swaps/meetups?
Question #2: A number of folks (myself included) occasionally visit MeFi/MeTa via PDA; for the sake of those "handheld immigrants", could a downloadable version of the Guidelines be made available for offline viewing?

How about sticky threads?
How about sticky threads? You know, one thread that stays at the top of the page where everyone can post their War on Terrorism Link of the Day and then say the same thing about it that they did the day (or hour) before?

MeFi RSS
Does MeFi have an RSS feed? I searched around, but couldn't find one...hopefully I wasn't missing something obvious...if there isn't one, could there be?
Suggestion: Change default search behavior
I noticed this thread (lofi link--in case it doesn't last) earlier and noticed that the poster, BarneyFifesBullet, mentioned that he'd searched for the topic and hadn't found it. A cursory search, however, turned up that it had, in fact, been posted a few months earlier. Long story short, I noticed that the default setting when you use the search function on MeFi sets the drop-down menu to "in the past month" which seems like it could be the culprit in a case like this where the poster seems to have searched unsuccessfully for a previously-posted link. It doesn't seem like something that would be frightfully hard to chance, and it might save us a few double posts...
