Edit posts pony
just wondering.... any way we could get a way to edit our own posts? ... i know there is a preview , but hey, mistakes happen
Island of Bad Posts?
I just noticed another insanely long no-link post was pulled this morning. It might be useful to have a Island of Bad Posts archive where stuff that gets pulled is anonymized and listed along with a 25 word description of why it was pulled. This page could be linked to the register page for new users so they can learn through negative example as well as learning by positive example just by reading the site. Plus I'm sure a lot of us are just curious about what's getting pulled....
A pony is granted: profile URLs featuring usernames
Just a thought: I'd eventually like to be able to get to user profiles via username somehow.
Add year to older posts
Here's a little suggestion... On threads older than 6 months, list the year beside the month and day on every comment. Why? Because I think it'd be useful on the rare posts where comments span a year or more like this or this.
One after another
Curious why posts go chronologically down the page and not up (most recent at top). At least as an option, this would seem a good idea.
I wanna see "Most Viewed User ID" stats.

Sometimes I stash a topic href in my bookmarks for a few days
Sometimes I stash a topic href in my bookmarks for a few days, so I don't forget about it as it rolls further and further off the front page. It Would Be Neat if topic pages declared how many new messages they contained, preempting a bit of thought as to whether it's worth scrolling down and finding my place again.
Request: a way to reset 'new' comments.
I totally depend on the new-since-your-last-visit feature to determine which threads to read, but sometimes I'll load up Metafilter and then something comes up and I don't have a chance to read those 200 new comments.
I would love a tiny little button somewhere on the homepage to the effect of "Forget I was here," so that I could come back in another hour or two and see all 300 or new comments, not just the new ones since my aborted visit.

Metafilter would be better if Matt baked everyone a cake
You know, metafilter would be a lot better if Matt baked everyone a cake. I'm sure that would fix all the problems
Could preview also search for references to the same link?
I know this will start a paradox of "I saw this before," but I think that it would be neat to have the preview option also do a search of the site to see if the link is referenced elsewhere. Now the question is, was this feature request made before?
Pony request for impermanent in-thread private messages
In light of recent discussions about hostility on MetaFilter, could it be helped by the ability to post a private message in a thread that disappears after a few weeks?
Custom 404 Page
What about a custom 404 page for MeFi?
Please add years to date field
This is, I hope, easy: years in date fields? MeFi has been around long enough so that when I look at a link to a thread that says "March 4" it could be 2000 or 2001. And, of course, it's only going to get worse.
Metafilter in the Media
Would it be too, I don't know...conceited to create a press page that keeps track of mentions of metafilter in the media? Sometimes it's nice to re-read good writeups of the site when it's 2am, and I'm at the end of my rope, responding to the umpteenth request for a new feature :).
Time on homepage to match user time?
a minor request: could the time on the home page be user-relative?
i have the annoying habit of taking every timestamp i see at face value, and i'm not in PST, so it creates a little hiccup in my brain.

New Metatalk thread indicator
Could you please have a new MetaTalk thread indicator on the main page?
You could either have a MetaTalk (new) indicator in the menu on top, where the "new" doesn't need to be a link, or perhaps near the "There have been X links and Y comments posted since your last visit" you could display a new MetaTalk thread(s) indicator.
This feature is not important, but it would be nice, as I am sure there are others out there like me who forget to check MetaTalk a few times. :)

a link to the *newest* item
The last week, I've been stymied by a mysterious bug that makes it impossible for me to see the front page of Metafilter in IE (5/Mac). (Yes, I've talked to Matt about it; yes, it's a mystery; no, I dont mind using another browser.) I'm working around the problem, at times when I don't want to use another browser, by linking to a particular thread page and then using the Newer and Older links to navigate. I never had much use for those links before, but now they're a godsend.
Anyway, what I wish I had was a link to the *newest* item. Not necessarily an addition to the Newer/Older interface, though that would be OK, maybe just a bookmarkable www.metafilter.com/newest URL, which always points at the newest item. SITO (sito.org), which has a similarly dynamic structure, has a TOP link which takes you to the level that's currently being built.

Sub-Threads for Tangents
Would it be good, bad, or otherwise to have the ability to create a “sub-thread” for a comment purposefully going off on a tangent? Personally, I think it could be useful, but it could easily become overused. I can’t think of a satisfactory way to prevent someone from making every single comment into a sub-thread for no good reason. The best idea I could come up with (and I’m not saying it’s even a good idea) is to limit sub-threads to once per topic (per user). Of course, it’s a possibility that more than one tangent might originate under a single thread but, in that case, the result (not being able to post a sub-thread for a tangent) is equivalent to what we have now (i.e., no sub-threads). Also, someone else might post a sub-thread for the tangent. Can anyone think of any better solutions, or is this a lame idea in the first place?
Also, although it may be handy, I don’t think MeFi would benefit from sub-threads to sub-threads (i.e., a sub-thread inside another sub-thread). At least not at this time.
Also also, if you do end up implementing this, it might be kinda cool to have a link to a topic’s sub-threads on MeFi’s main page (under the topic, e.g.). This could become a problem if a topic has a ton of sub-threads, but I don’t think it’s likely to become a serious problem. It might happen, but I doubt it would happen very often.
Also also also, the button on Post a Thread to MetaTalk reads Preview the Link. I noticed this just a second ago, and it doesn’t really bother me, but (perhaps) just Preview would be more appropriate.

One Year Ago
Elsewhere, Gluechunk said: One thing I've been doing lately is going back into the archives to read threads/posts from exactly a year ago.
Neat idea. How 'bout a link for it, Matt? Yeah, I could go into the archives, but I think it'd be neat to click somewhere on the front page and go to the MeFi front page from exactly a year ago. Of course, I don't quite know where you'd put the link. It sometimes seems too cluttered up there already. Maybe it would be good for an occasional "Classic MeFi Thread" anniversary. Anyway, just a thought.

This is another request regarding the way threads are sorted
This is another request regarding the way threads are sorted. Its would be a little more tricky than the sorts implemented thus far, but I would guess its definately possible (I'm consdering doing this on my site). I really like this idea, but I don't recall seeing it in use anywhere before. Anyway, it goes something like this:
1) THREAD SORTING
a. new threads (to each particular visitor) appear at the top of page, with slightly different background color to differentiate them from the rest
b. old threads with new comments follow (posts with the most new comments first, or something like this)
c. last comes the threads with no new comments since last visit, displayed in the order they were actually posted.
Just a little something I was thinking about. It seems to me like it would be a nice way to sort out threads. Would anybody agree with me on this one? Has anybody seen something similar implemented on other sites?

can we start reading from the new comments?
Is it possible in the customization to enter each thread where the new comments begin? I have mentioned before that I'm not a programmer, so that's my excuse if this is a stupid question.
Sorting options
Since I like links over drop-down menus, I'd like to see links in the "There have been 2 links and 21 comments posted since your last visit" sentence. For example, if I visit MeFi and my default sort is by most comments, I could click on "2 links" and have it sort by date. Or, I could click on "21 comments" and have it sort by recent comments.
"Contribute" link?
Matt, you should put a contribute link on the main menu bar. I mostly use Netscape, and was not paying attention the Amazon disscussion. I only noticed the link on the blue sidebar when I launched Explorer to check out another page, and it defaulted to Metafilter. Might be a more offical place to encourage people to help out more frequently.
New Sorting Methods for MeFi
I'm now allowing a sort by most commented to, and it goes back as many days as you set in your preferences (or 7 days by default). This option is not cookied though, I didn't see the need, since it's more of a view than a permanent sort type. So if you go into a thread, then click the Metafilter graphic or home link, you'll go back to whatever default sort you were last cookied to. Is that confusing enough? Just use it, if you find errors or wish it did something more, say something here.
The other new sorting method, by My Comments, looks into the database for all the threads you participated in, over the past few days (as many as you show on the front page). Like the other method (most commented), this one does not get cookied, because it's more of a temporary view.
When I first hit metafilter, I view by date, if I see something interesting, I comment. Later that day, I might check most recently commented to see where the action is, and then I might hit "my comments" to see what's happened on the threads I left comments in.
I can easily take off the date restrictions on both options, so it's more of a "all time" done only 20 at a time, but I'm going to leave these as is before I add two more new options.

Sidebar Feature Request
How about putting that nifty new "sort by comments" feature onto that nifty new sidebar feature?
Visual help in spotting popular threads
A suggestion for the site: Visual help in spotting the most popular threads on MetaFilter.
Pony: dates and times in post citations
I might just be, you know, a little slow, but more than once in recent days I have been cruising the MeFi front page and gotten lost, and had to scroll up (and up and up) to find the date header... perhaps it will soon be time to consider putting dates along with the times in the "posted by" footer on the front page.
dates on search results pony
Here's an easy win: dates on search results.
Should we have a separate page for politics?
Would MetaFilter be improved by moving political discussions to their own community separate from the main page? I love politics, but I think these kinds of links breed like rabbits, and I sometimes wonder if I am contributing to the Free Republicazation of this site.
Last post posted on [DATETIME]
Would a "Last post posted on [DATETIME]" be a bad addition to thread headers? MetaTalk, since it uses the same cookie info as MeFi, could benefit from it the most, but there are times it could be useful on MeFi also. Perhaps as a user option, so not everyone gets the extra clutter?
Metafilter Calendar, anyone? (2000)
Metafilter Calender anyone? -- would anyone be up for participating in producing a MetaFilter calendar for 2001? It might be a terrible idea, but could have potential (?!)
More posts requires better search engine
Since the number of postings is growing by leaps and bounds, it would be nice to see a better search engine...(more inside)
Clickthrough counter?
How about a counter that would allow us to see how many times a particular link has been viewed? On the other hand, might be a bit cluttery. Just a thought.
Title attribute text pony!
Would it be difficult to add a TITLE attribute text field to the ctrl-shift-a url pop up window, to provide extra in-thread link description nice and easy like?
What happens if a TITLE attribute is empty? test. Apparently nothing.

Messaging System?
Instant Messenging.
Some sort of system via which one can leave short messages for any of the members here by clicking on their name, typing the msg and sending it. When the member comes online, he/she can find it via a new instant msg notifier.
DeskMod uses a system like that, although it's PHP based, perhaps there is a ColdFusion based system too.
Alternatively, you could just setup an ICQ/AIM messenging panel in the profile, from which one can send the member a short message.

Let people fix their typos!
Let people fix their typos! The recent thread about "gohper" hit all my buttons, in a non-happy way.
I mean, maybe it's not a good idea to let the author re-edit the entry, but let *someone* fix massive misspellings, please! I work as a technical editor for a living, I'd volunteer to do this occasionally just to clean up the place. (obviously, with explicit records of every single change made - I wouldn't mess with the message, I'd just clean up the mess, and I'd be happy to let people see exactly what was changed).

Would it be feasible to let us munge our cookie/user data?
Would it be feasible to let us munge our cookie/user data? Specifically, the last date/time visited? It'd be something of a work-around for when the front page refreshes during topical views, and there's no indication of what threads contain new data.
I tried editing the cookie directly, but all those percentages confused me. :-)

iParty Audio Chat?
Sort of a feature: iParty is an audio chat program. Would anyone be intrested in setting up a server for MetaFilter? MF is a grat place to start a conversation, and there are a lot of people here that provide it. I think giving everyone the ability to have an actual, real-time conversation would be an interesting extension to the MetaFilter experience.
p.s. I'm not asking this specifically of Matt, either. I understand that about five people can be in a room together on a 28.8 server before lag becomes a real problem, so I imagine anyone that would have a static ip number could run the server. Of course, Matt might have to point it out before it would be accepted. (i.e. "official")

A request for traffic stats on a page-by-page basis.
When you start a new topic, there could be a checkmark for the option to put a small counter on the bottom of the comments page for your link.
Pony: unvisited threads remain "new"
It would be very nice to keep which threads have new messages static across visits, so if I'm unable to visit a thread with new messages in one visit, it's still marked as having new messages the next time I hit MeFI.
The option to receive the best of email won't stay ticked.
I have selected the option to recieve the wonderful new best of email, but the option does not stay ticked and i haven't recieved any emails. Any ideas ?
Where I stopped reading indicator wanted
It's great that MetaFilter shows how many comments for each posting are new for you on the main page. It would be even greater if, on the comments page itself, there was some kind of indication of which were new. A simple
tag at the boundary would do...
Hey, what about flyers?
Hey, what about flyers? You know those grungy photocopied things you'd see in coffee houses? Would it make sense to have an area for them as well. I know that file size may be an issue, but...
I think it would be great to have a daily digest mail, with links to MeFi posts
now that MeFi is starting to move very fast, with posts moving down the page by afternoon i think it would be great to have a daily digest mail, with links to MeFi posts. i also agree with the idea below about email alerts when a posting you've responded to is further commented.
the option to be notified
Matt -
One thing that would be cool(and i thoughtyou had mentioned before) is the option to be notified when someone has posted to a thread that you had already posted in.
Examp: I posted a comment under the 'Portman poses' thread. User cjd posts a comment in the same thread.
Based on my preferences it shoots me an email notifiying me that the thread has been updated.
we've got this working with the evolt code pretty easily. if you want the code, lemme know.
thanks man :)

Bigger Post Window
Is there any particular reason why the window I use to enter my text is so small? I can't think of any reason why it couldn't be twice as wide and four times as tall, and it would really make it a lot easier to use.
Shove it over to the left a long ways to make more room; all of this could be done simply by altering slightly the layout of that section of the page. It wouldn't alter the code in the slightest; just the description and positioning of that window. The window would continue to work exactly as it does now.

Let's add a rating system to MetaFilter
I think a rating system (perhaps similar to that of HalfBakery) would be a spiffy addition to MetaTalk/Filter. I thought of this a few days ago and had a genuine situation in mind wherein it might come in handy (Honest, I did!), but have since forgotten what good, exactly, it would be. Then, of course this whole TiVo essay thing came up, and I really want people to know how great I think bradlands' Limericks are, but don't want to be rude by posting "Hey, I just wanted to let everyone know how great I think bradlands' Limericks are." Ratings, of course, would be the obvious, and polite, way to do it.
Of course, I'm sure it would also prove a valuable addition to the entire MF/T community and everyone would love it, etc.

Search feature to sort links/comments by username?
Is it possible to add a search feature that would allow someone to sort links/comments made by username?
Request: button to list threads with new responses.
I hopped on to MeFi just now to find 4 new threads and 38 new responses. Only 36 of them were on my front page, which means I'll never get to know where 37 and 38 are. And I have my prefs set to deliver 7 days' worth of posts. This is the first time I can remember this happening, so I'm finally pushed to ask: Any consideration of a "list threads with new responses" button, or somesuch?
Selflink prompts pony request
Baylink self-blogged!
Alright. Flamage in this situation being pointless, this basically just cemented an idea I've been rolling around in my head for the past day or two.
I propose a "metaprojects.metafilter.com" or somesuch location for self-blogging.
