Adding year of release to Fanfare front page posts

This has been asked before, in Nov 2022, when the site owner called it a "really good idea" and a then-current tech person said it seemed "uncontroversial and positive, so I'll put that on the pile of things to do." Is this still something the community thinks is worth doing? If so, any chance it could be implemented? It might increase engagement in an area of the site that could use it. I know I'd find it useful, anyway.

Help me re-find this file organization scheme

A couple of months ago, I was poking around on AskMetafilter for productivity things. I found my way, via a comment on an oldish-post, to an organization system for computer files that I got excited about, started to implement without even reading the whole thing, and have found very helpful. Now I'd like to read more about the system and I can't find the link again.

Please give full names before using acronyms

Whether it's the name of a person, a drug or medical treatment, a non-governmental organization (NGO), a less-common internet term, or something specific to your field of interest, please spell it out and only then use the acronym.

MetaMixTapes: Cats

Let's make a mixtape! (I'm never sure how appropriate it is to do something light and fun on MeTa so apologies if there's another corner of the site that I haven't considered that would be better for this.)

Metatalktail Hour: Unsolicited advice, please

Happy weekend, everyone! If you're a Mefite, you've probably found a lot of valuable tips on the site, especially in Ask Metafilter, but those threads are usually focusing on a specific problem or situation. Today I'd like to ask you to share your random tips and tricks about anything at all (that's fit to print!). If it's something you've found handy or helpful, if it makes life easier, faster, neater, nicer, or just more fun, please share!

Thanks, chariot pulled by cassowaries

This is a public thank you to chariot pulled by cassowaries for their frequent posts of good news from the natural world. It brightens my day to read about plants and animals recovering adversity, and people being not-terrible in helping them. Cheers to you.

RIP ricochet biscuit

Greetings, all. I'm posting to inform you of the death of ricochet biscuit. He passed away last night after a short illness. Michael (or Warren as he was known to some) will be sorely missed. His wife, Wendy, asked me to say a few words and "do him justice." I'm not sure I can, because I don't think words are sufficient. A brilliant man, in both his natural intelligence and his encyclopedic knowledge of, well, just about everything, Michael could always be counted on for an interesting conversation. A polyglot, multi-instrumentalist, D&D (and GURPS!) master gamer, funny, passionate, ethical, and reliable; you couldn't ask for a better friend. Joining in 2008, Michael really loved the metafilter community and often told me how much he enjoyed the lively discussions found here. Funeral and other information to follow.

Don't want to name names yet, but we've connected with a great MeFite lawyer who's well-versed with this process and was generous enough to meet with us gratis recently to answer all our questions and outline how everything works. Adam is collaborating with Jessamyn to make their representation official, and we spent some hours in a sidebar on the... [more]

[This was originally requested during a transition period where we were figuring out the site's governance with the SC. I went ahead and asked frimble to proceed with the change and make a formal announcement once this is implemented. Thanks!] [view]

In my view a small group of formal interim board members is not necessarily bad (and smaller groups can be helpful sometimes), Endorsing this point. A full board and committees are not necessary right now. You need a minimum of three people to stand up the nonprofit, no more. I’d focus on that and leave board recruitment and... [more]

So of the 13 people who have served on the Interim Board, 6 have resigned over the last few months, including the board chair who was only in that role two months? [view]

No-one has resigned due to arguments but due to scheduling issues. We’d love to see more people so we can reduce the load per person making it even easier for other people to join and move faster to the permanent goal of a community-led Metafilter. Not to dis the amazing people already on the board, but you do not have to be a rockstar to... [more]

Unfortunately I don't currently have sufficient time to contribute as a board member myself. I'd like to recommend that the notice at the top of Metafilter be updated to mention the need for board members, the latest linked nonprofit update is from march. [view]

we’ve intentionally worked on making it possible for non-US citizens to be involved, and working on recognizing barriers to help people who can’t participate due to home country issues to have a voice. Re: fundraising not speaking formally, but our primary focus has been legal and structural so we can get smart capable people into fundraising... [more]

In my view a small group of formal interim board members is not necessarily bad (and smaller groups can be helpful sometimes), provided that there are enough people to do necessary tasks. If there are areas the board could spin off and delegate to volunteers, that might be worth exploring. The degree of commitment to join the board or committees is... [more]

I haven't counted recently, but those numbers sound about right. Some of us realized we didn't have the time we thought we did, and some of us had other things come up. Speaking for myself, when we started, I had hoped we would finish in about six months, and that's what I posted at the time. I have another major project I need to devote my... [more]

Johnny Decimal! I use it on my work and home computers, and it's been SO helpful. My mailboxes also match the same so I can save attachments to the corresponding place, and it's just so much easier to find things on my computers now. [view]

I am in a time zone that is six hours ahead of eastern so I’m asleep when the board meets. That’s not a complaint, that’s an explanation of why this non-rockstar member is unable to nominate herself for the board. If volunteers are needed in June, I could do some volunteering then. I’m fully booked until then, alas. I’m not surprised that... [more]

About ED compensation -- It's too early in the process for us to discuss that, or even really to have anything to say. The finance and ED search teams have just started meeting. The current plan is for each of them to meet with the full board on May 9. Also, we encourage volunteers for any of the committees, even if you don't join the board. [view]

We do have some board members, and non-board volunteers, from outside the USA, and we'd be happy to have more. We would also be happy to have more people of color. [view]

Both the mods and the developers of the site have been contractors for years, even from before I joined. We just decided to label those expenses in Quickbooks accurately. Here’s some rough data about the MetaTalk queue: - So far we have rejected 2 posts in 2024 - For each post that gets rejected, we reach out to the OP and explain the... [more]
