Ello is a lesson in how not to launch a project. The most important features weren't available when then opened invitations, and people realized it, and stopped participating. Since then the features have been added, but people haven't bothered to return.

It has some possibilities, but I doubt it will gain traction. But I still check in every once in a while to see what's up, and hope. Anything is better than Facebook.

Am I the only one getting a ridiculously intense cocaine vibe off the whole ello project? The huge grandiose plans built on a platform that is basically a really rough proof-of-concept retread of well-worn territory, the constant switching of focus to the next shiny distraction, the inexplicable ability to bluster their way into getting people to believe that they're going into serious competition with Facebook ... they're coked to the gills, right?

I know a bunch of people both on and off mefi who use that app. The frequent autoupdates it makes to other social media accounts can sometimes give the impression that its users are serious alcoholics. There's nothing like having to answer private messages from concerned family members which say, "Have you been reading your cousin's tweets? After the scare, the students needed to unwind. “There were Pygmies in this village,” Kimball recalled. “They were sitting on huge truck tires. I remember one night, we sat around a campfire and we got them high. We took out this huge joint, and everyone smoked dope and got high with a bunch of Pygmies in the Congo.”

That's as many people as I had in my Buick Brigade group back in college.

While those Honda and Toyota FB groups were vaguely popular, I thought "I really like my old person's car, which I actually got from old people (my grandparents -and now I realize my second car was also from an old person, but not my grandparents, but I digress-), I'll start a group with a catchy name, and I'll make a banner for the group!" So I did. I think the second member left after a few months, because he probably realized there wasn't anything happening.

Ello didn't even show up for Ello.
I was all settled into my seat with a freshly cucumber-infused bottle of heavily branded water when they broke the bad news: Paul Budnitz, founder of Ello, was AWOL.

His South by Southwest session, "You Are Not A Product: The Ello Revolution," attracted a modest crowd of 60 or so. They'd filed into a drab Hyatt ballroom just south of Austin's town lake enthusiastically enough, poised to telegraph Budnitz's kernels of wisdom to the Twittersphere. Futurist and sci-fi author Bruce Sterling was in the back row, in fact.

But Budnitz never showed. And so we waited.
That is amazing. The hype had died under a year (founded March 2014, didn't show up for SXSW in March 2015).

Ello Pretends It’s Not Over With Video And Music Launch (January 2015)
Already-forgotten, anti-Facebook social network Ello today launched the ability to share music and video clips in its feed, but that won’t matter.
That's right, 10 months after launching, you can embed streaming media! How very modern of them.

Ha, that reminds me of what CalTech pulled on my my senior year in high school. You see, CalTech was under all sorts of pressure to even up their gender ratio, so they sent applications to every girl who scores better than a 700 on their Math SATs and checked the "sure, share my name with colleges" box. I... did not want to go to school in California, so I ignored it. About a week after the application deadline passed, I got a fresh form from CalTech, with a letter suggesting that perhaps my application had been lost in the mail, or I had forgotten to send it, so just for me they were sending me a fresh copy and extending the deadline for a month. This happened every month until mid-Spring. The same thing happened to several of my friends in the same demographic. It was hilarious.

That sounds...desperate.

No? Did maybe your cat, like, walk on the keyboard and step on "unsubscribe" by accident? Because that happens. My cat has done all kinds of shit to my computer....like, changing from portrait to landscape display. It's the craziest thing, I don't even know how to do that, but he just steps on it with his fat paw and suddenly the display is magnified 17% and the narrator is on. Then I have to figure out how to undo it, which takes like half an hour. Shit is crazy. So, we know it can happen. No worries. Just checking.

Or maybe you did it the other night, after you had that 3rd beer. Those were high-octane beers, you know, not that 5.5 stuff. I know it knocks me for a loop when I'm not expecting it. Just saying, your thinking could maybe have been a little fuzzy and I don't want you to have to face the consequences of a decision you didn't really think through.

Maybe we caught you in a moment where you were like "AAAAA I get TOO MUCH email!" Dude, we know where you're coming from. Legit. I can totally get behind unsubscribing from, like, Dick's Sporting Goods and shit. But you know what, we're not that. What you need is more of, like, a surgical strike mentality. Dick's? Gone! Ello? No way, that's an essential life tool, like a Leatherman. I mean we understand what you're dealing with but you need to approach this kind of thing with some strategy, not some knee-jerk reaction.

No? Are you sure? Listen, think it over. I'll get back to you in a few days and we can talk about it some more. I just feel like we owe it to you - no, you owe it to yourself - to really give this consideration it deserves. I care about you, and I don't want you to miss out on maybe the biggest social media thing that's happend in the last eighteen months. Or the next eighteen months. Or maybe ever. That's all I'm saying. It's about you, not us. More soon.
