As I said it's part of a look at the way people view information, without validating it.

The problem was getting traffic to the "article". Believe it or not I actually use MetaFilter (different alias, of course) all the ti me, but we needed more feedback and data - and as a result of "whoring" the article around, it actually got fairly widely distributed on the net (for what is clearly a hoax article to anyone with much of an IQ).

Also, guys, it's a damn funny article, that is written well, if you "get it" (I didn't write it, I can't write for shit). Really it is about entertainment. No malicious intent. I'm not trying to excuse myself, just the jig was up and the follow up article will go up as soon as the writer finishes it. At least it got a discussion going tho eh?

This is asinine. Matt, I'd love it if you'd run a SQL query against this guy's IP so that you can also ban his non-sockpuppet username.

Also, guys, it's a damn funny article

No, it really isn't. If it wasn't so obviously fake, if it seemed like it actually could be true. That might be funny. This was just...weak.

Personally, I think that this account should be terminated, and if Matt can figure out who you are, he should boot your other account(s) too.

You say here that you 'use metafilter all the time', but in the other thread, you play at 'oh I'm the noob, I didn't know'.

You knew. And you lied about knowing.

synkro, before the banhammer falls, what was the point of your self-post

I think its's pretty clear that the whole point was to direct traffic to his rather mediocre satire (using that word loosely) website. He says as much in his post above, but couches it in the language of his B.S. "expirement". Ban away.

Believe it or not I actually use MetaFilter

I find this even harder to believe than any of the other bullshit I smell on this. Any MetaFilter user would HAVE to know the amount of shit they would take for something like this.

Hell, I'd open a MeTa just for the atrocious spelling.

So, just to be sure I've got this right, today Patrick Synkro deliberately violated the guidelines of a popular community blog, shitting on what's probably the most important rule here, the rule against selfishly linking to your own stuff. Patrick Synkro didn't give a fuck. Patrick Synkro just took a steaming dump on Metafilter to get a few dishonest hits to his site, then lied about what he did. In short, Patrick Synkro just did the lamest, most disrespectful thing a person can do here. Did I get that right?

He couldn't have spent too much time around here, or he would have known we would have figured it out.

I do think it's time to get more mods on metafilter.

I have no idea how something like this would work but it sounds like a good idea. The Metafilter membership includes hackers and programmers and whatnot so do we even need Matt? Lets go all "hex editor" or whatever on this guy. Mob justice!
posted by mlis at 5:57 PM on March 11, 2006

This shit has got to stop. Other than the amount of extra work involved (setting up the system, doing a little digging to see if it's a self-link or a double), is there any reason not to have a "first-time posters must have their links approved" policy, as has been suggested several times?

Okay. Ban the account. Block his IP. Then we load up on a plane. With boxes of snakes. And we fly until we're upside down. We find this guy, we cover him with the poison snakes. We go to his house, we burn it down. Then, on to the relatives.

Yeah, f_m, it's asking a lot of Matt and Jess, but I wonder how much, really -- that is, I wonder how many posts in a given day are from first-time posters, and therefore how much extra work that would really entail for the mods.

It's true that the cabalcollective is better at sussing these things out, but by the time we do, the self-linker has already gotten what he wanted.
