Musical collaborators list? December 1, 2007 1:16 PM   Subscribe

Karlos the Jackal made an excellent suggestion near the end of an earlier thread, but I don't know whether any of the admins ever saw it. Is a permanent list of available MeFi musical collaborators a possibility?

MeFi session musicians. Awesome.

This seems like the sort of thing the wiki is made for and the FAQ could easily point to. I will give my droning banjo mandolin tunes to anyone who would like them, but I am unable to really play along with "music" per se.

Put another way, we can list them here, transfer them to the wiki and when a decent list is there we can put it in the FAQ and maybe make a note on Music somewhere. This way people can edit their own entries as things change.

That is a very cool idea.

Why aren't your droning banjo mandolin tunes on MeMu, jessamyn? Why?!?

one of them is zomg

Well, if a FAQ gets made, include me in, as I've got a bunch of electric basses, recording studio experience , and can record along in Logic or Garage Band, and I know how to use the tubes to transfer files. I admittedly haven't been focusing on music much in the last two years, and a little nudge to get involved in projects would be welcomed, right now.

Okay, I set up a wiki page here. Collaborators, follow my example and add yourself to the list!

I would be up for it.

I took this to mean that the title of the piece was 'zmog', which is probably not true but should be.

I'm in. Should have recording abilities again (including a shiny new guitar) by next week! Can't wait to get back to it.

Not enough guitarists.

BTGoG it may be caching the last version of the page. Try holding down the shift key and reloading? Also make sure you are not just previewing because I don't see your edits from here either.

I'm in. Been in so long it looks like out to me.

Doesn't seem to be saving my changes or it's taking awhile to update. If you see my entry three times, you'll know it worked.

Not enough guitarists.

Probably the first time those words have been uttered/written.

I'm in. Also, if any Mefites in the East Bay want to make some music in meatspace I'd love to hear from them. I've got tons of equipment and recording capabilities. Bass, two different types of banjo-type things, and low-grade keyboards are at your disposal.

I had problems saving mine too, then I realized that at the top of the page there is an equation you have to solve, that might be what's stopping you guys from saving it.

jess, is there any chance that it could be sidebarred for a couple of days so that potential musicians can see it after it rolls out of the main page of MetaTalk?
posted by micayetoca at 7:18 PM on December 1, 2007

Of course. I'm going to sidebar it and the ShopMe page probably tomorrow so they're both there at once and still there by Monday.

This is really great. Kudos to all! (paging The Great Big Mulp!)

Added.

The secret, KevinSkomsvold, is answering the hidden question at the top of the page when you submit your form. Worked for me, anyway.

Yeah, that captcha fucked with me at first too.

Posted an entry about the wiki on the [Blatant Plug] MeMu Podcast blog [/Blatant Plug], on the extremely off chance someone out there reads it but not MeTa or the sidebar.
Again, great idea, and thanks for the heads up, cortex.

*Resumes catching up on the last three days' worth of music*

I'm not even seeing the captcha. Am I even doing it correctly? I click on edit, add my info and click save. There was no captcha anywhere I could see. I've never edited a wiki page so maybe I'm doing it wrong. Could someone add my stuff?

"Guitar (acoustic, slide, lap steel) and mandolin. Well versed in country, old and new and blues. Contact via Mefi mail or contact info at site."

Thanks.
posted by KevinSkomsvold at 9:19 PM on December 1, 2007

I must confess that I suggested this for purely selfish reasons. I am not actually much of a musician and thus I am always on the lookout for talented folks that I can exploit for my own dubious ends. And you all fell for it! Ah ha ha ha ha

(I will add myself anyway.)

Kevin, I went ahead and added you. You have to hit save and then solve the Captcha and hit save again, I guess. (Weird.) Check it out yo and see if it's ok.
posted by Karlos the Jackal at 9:35 PM on December 1, 2007

When you click 'Submit' on an edit containing a new external link the page does not accept the edit straight away but instead reloads with a simple maths-based captcha at the top, above the large text entry box, asking you to resubmit with captcha. Easy to miss if you are looking at the edit you made and the button at the bottom and not the top of the page.

NOW what I want is a way to make requests -- like "I need some Dick Dale-style guitar -- who's gonna gimme some?" and yeah

I'm seconding the page to the Mulp, by the way. That guy has all sorts of crazy/awesome noisemakers that need to be used by far more people.

Oh man, some months ago I was suffering to find a violinist for this song. I'd love it if there was another violinist for other songs.

Looks like we've got enough of a list on the Wiki page now that we could get it sidebarred? I see that the ShopMe page is on the sidebar, but not the musicians list.

Should that list be in order by username or something? I don't know if that would be useful.

Of course, it would be cool if there was also a companion list, cross-referenced and sorted by instrument.

Right. But everybody know what gender a micayetoca is, don't they?

As for the language thing, yeah, it's a great idea, I actually stole it from ORthey, who listed his French skills pour payer les bills.

And I love Piazolla.
