Hoi, let's meetup in SF around july 3rd!

I'll be visiting SF for a few weeks from the Netherlands. And I'd love to buy you a beer.

I liked the previous SF meetup I visited a lot, so let's do it again.
Yes, I know that's a month after the previous SF meetup. So it's high time!

I might be game. I don't think I have any plans for Independence Day.

I've been thinking about organizing a birdwatching/photography/local history walk on Telegraph Hill - how about that Saturday? (July 5th)

Proposal: Meet at the Montgomery BART station, climb the Greenwich Steps to Coit Tower, share a potluck picnic lunch and enjoy the views, then descend the Filbert Steps and look for the wild parrots of Telegraph Hill, and finally saunter back to the Ferry Building for ice cream, beer, or whatever. That puts us at the Embarcadero BART station, so transportation is easy for most people.

Lots of interesting architecture, lovely gardens, splendid views of the bay and the city, and maybe some serendipitous fun at the Ferry Plaza (last time I was there, a couple of people were handing out free samples of ice cream, and there was a drum corps from a middle school in Alameda giving a hugely enthusiastic performance. With dancing, even.)

Anybody up for fresh air, photography, and lots and lots of stairs?

A good July 3rd activity would be to go see my band The Whoreshoes at the Red Devil Lounge at 9(ish).
I might also be down for the lots and lots of stairs option, depending on the timing.

Heh, people whom I met at the previous SF meetup I attended/initiated linked me as a 'met' contact.
I felt it was simple courtesy to return the favour.
Still it was a little daunting to have to fill in the questionnaire thus:
What's your relationship with <handlename>?
[ ] Friendship
[x] Physical
[ ] Professional
[ ] Geographical
[ ] Family
[ ] Romantic
It just shows up as 'met'.

You're part of my little stamp collection now.

So, jouke, would you like to go for a walk before buying us a round of beer? Or would it be better if I posted a separate thread for the "Parrots of the Barbary Coast" meetup?

Local history pun there; that area of San Francisco was known as the Barbary Coast in the 1800s because of the organized (and disorganized) crime and vice operations based there. Telegraph Hill was something of a fortress for gangs and criminals, and it was too dangerous for law-abiding citizens to go there. Even cops were afraid to set foot in this "pirate stronghold", and the area acquired the nickname of that other notorious pirate stronghold. It wasn't until the earthquake of 1906 burned out the area that Telegraph Hill and environs became a respectable neighborhood.

I'd love to come along to any sort of meetup. Anyone want a ride to the city from Oakland or Alameda? I missed the last meetup for want of parking in Hayes Valley.
posted by wzcx at 8:35 AM on June 18, 2008

Quietgal, I'm open to any scenario that generates sufficient traction and that involves beer in some stage.

I'd still holding out for some more SF mefites to show their support for either of the 3 options proposed so far:
- meetup in a bar, drink beer
- hike up&down Telegraph Hill
- go to smartyboots' band

So I'd say wait a little bit longer before deciding on creating a separate parrot meetup.

Since we're here, I might as well ask: is anyone else going to see Lightspeed Champion at the Independent on Friday?
posted by roll truck roll at 9:24 AM on June 18, 2008

jasper411, I had to use the google to decrypt your proposal. It turns out it's not about telephones and fairy tales but baseball. Unfortunately baseball is quite inscrutable to a european like me. So I'm voting against that.
posted by jouke at 8:09 AM on June 19, 2008

I would be up for any or all three, though a recent irrational bout of fitness has sadly turned me into an early bird, so there may not be enough time for all three on a weeknight. I work right at the foot of Telegraph Hill, so that option appeals to my laziness (but then all the stairs kind of cancel it out).

Is anyone else fond of The Animation Show? It's coming to SF on July 4th.

I brought some stroopwafels from the Netherlands. Instead of the licorice I brought the previous time. Would anyone of you like me to bring them to the meetup?
posted by jouke at 5:00 PM on June 26, 2008

Yes, please - just yesterday I was able to get the taste of licorice out of my mouth, so my palate is cleansed for the next Dutch delicacy.

Any resolution on June 3rd?
posted by junesix at 11:54 AM on June 27, 2008

OK, here's the plan for July 5th (note that jouke will be around for a while, so further meetups are a definite possibility):

1. Meet at 11:00 a.m. in the Montgomery BART/Muni station. Concourse level (not train platforms), dead center of the station. You don't need to pay a fare if you're coming by some other means, just enter the station and go to the middle.

2. We walk to Telegraph Hill and climb some stairs.

3. We share a potluck picnic lunch at Coit Tower Plaza around 11:30 - noon.

4. Birds, gardens, architecture etc are admired.

5. We go down some more stairs and walk back to the Ferry Building for beer, snacks, etc.

6. We should be at the Ferry Building by 2 p.m. so if you want to skip the stairs and meet up for the beer, look for us in the outdoor seating area behind the building. The Ferry Building is right across the street from the Embarcadero BART station, at the foot of Market Street.

Bring your camera and potluck lunch goodies to share! The best way to ensure warm sunny weather is to dress in layers. You can get a sunburn even through fog, so a hat and sunscreen would be prudent (and will not jinx the weather).

Hope to see you there!

you bet I'm up for some stroopwafels!

Ok people, the meetup date is coming up. What would be a good bar to meetup on july 3rd? Obviously I don't know the best locations so I'd welcome a good suggestion. Preferably one with some nice local brews so I can buy you a nice beer.

ps Quietgal, I wont be in SF on july 5th. So I won't join you .
posted by jouke at 10:14 AM on June 30, 2008

Uh, ok, bar-wise how about something in the Polk Street neck of the woods (close to the Red Devil Lounge and smartyboots's show)? It's not really my neighborhood of expertise; I go to the Hemlock a good bit for shows but I'm not sure it's a good place for a meetup, though it might be better earlier in the evening. Anyone else have ideas? There's that one bar across the street from the Hemlock, Lush or something, would that be good?
posted by whir at 8:09 PM on July 1, 2008

Well, maybe (again? I know, we were just there...) The Edinburgh Castle? It's sizable. They got beer and whisk(e)y and fish and chips. They open at five.

I'm open to Polk St. places as well, but it's been so long since I hung out there that I can't make a rec either. (I am lazy, and usually stay home to drink.)
posted by rtha at 8:26 PM on July 1, 2008

I'm cheering for all suggested locations equally of course.
posted by jouke at 11:25 PM on July 1, 2008

Isn't the Hemlock always loud?

As for Edinburgh Castle: It's clear then, I think - trivia's on Tuesdays.

To brainstorm: Tommy's Joynt? Kimo's? Lush? I haven't been to any of these in ages, but I could check on them tonight.
posted by Pronoiac at 9:30 AM on July 2, 2008

Ooh, I'm in favor of Tommy's Joynt... Greasy food is at the ready, it isn't crazy loud, and there are big tables to sit around.
posted by whir at 10:05 AM on July 2, 2008

Also, Tommy's has a couple of rooms upstairs in the back, if I remember correctly, seating around a dozen. I don't remember anything about their alcohol selection, though.
posted by Pronoiac at 10:12 AM on July 2, 2008

They have a full bar - as a beer aficionado I can't vouch for the cocktails but their draft beer selection is decent.
posted by whir at 10:37 AM on July 2, 2008

Tommy's Joynt would be fun. I've been wanting to sit down and sample the beers there but haven't had a good excuse. I recall they have a few on tap but the real draw is the huge international bottled beers cache.
posted by junesix at 5:43 PM on July 2, 2008

Good. We have a winner. Tommy's it will be.
What time do you want to meet up? 7 pm?

I'm looking forward to trying out some interesting local brews, microbrews etc. Since Belgian, German & UK beer is rather common in NL. I'm sure you'll be able to recommend something.
posted by jouke at 6:50 PM on July 2, 2008

I'll be there! 7 sounds good to me!
posted by aubilenon at 11:07 PM on July 2, 2008

I checked - the back room is bigger than I remembered (two or three dozen seats?), & that part was fairly quiet & well lit. So yeah. 7pm.

For later reference, stuff in that neighborhood:
Lush Lounge is too small, I think.
Hemlock Tavern was quiet tonight, but then, I checked early.
Edinburgh Castle is good but dark, so the video took some work to make visible.
For beer selection, the Toronado in the Lower Haight is renowned, innit?
posted by Pronoiac at 11:49 PM on July 2, 2008

Well, if anyone manages to crawl up to Polk St after the meetup, come on over and say hi. You may even be able to see The Whoreshoes without going to the Red Devil Lounge - we'll probably be busking somewhere on Polk between 7 and 10. We're scheduled to go on at 10pm.
Give me a holla - I'll be the one with the banjo and the bleach blonde fauxhawk.
posted by smartyboots at 12:20 AM on July 3, 2008

Sorry, I won't be able to join you tonight, but I hope some of you can make it to the meetup on July 5th. And maybe we can do something else before jouke goes home to the Netherlands - gotta get me some stroopwafels, dangit!

I'll try to come tonight (if I comprehend-eded the time, date, and place).
posted by ClaudiaCenter at 3:56 PM on July 3, 2008

Qg, I can't guarantee there will be any stroopwafels left after tonight I'm afraid. That all depends how popular they'll be as you can imagine.

Btw; I'm sure that I'll be able to find you guys by asking everybody in Tommys "metafilter?".

You people will be able to recognise me by the fact that I'm lean&tall (6' 6") and I'll be wearing a cap with an american flag on it.

Yes, I know the cap isn't very distinctive. On the metafilter meetup I was wearing an orange jacket when Holland was playing for the European Voetbal Championship. That did not make me stand out either....

1. you have to disassemble your bike and take the parts with you into the pub.
2. OMG there's a flameout right now on metatalk but we can't participate since we're in this pub
2. lots of anecdotes on SF, metafilter & boingboing

I had fun you guys. Thanks.

4. it seems that buying rounds is not part of SF/US drinking culture. I really had to force folks to accept a round from me. (no beerboarding took place though)
posted by jouke at 12:45 AM on July 4, 2008

Oi, that was fun, thanks all. Unfortunately I have just discovered that a prior commitment has been rescheduled to tomorrow morning, so I won't be able to make it to the stairmaster excursion. But have fun out there!

It was a pleasure.

The callouts are posted, but not linked up top yet. There's a bug that I've already notified the admins about.

rtha mentioned the fishing report. That damn thing has a voice which is distinctive and somewhat invasive. A good reading of it would be divine.

Ach, meant to post this last night or the night before, but forgot: can't make today's meetup. We've got a house thing that for some reason I thought was on Sunday, but is actually today, and takes place at sort of the same time as the meetup. Have fun, y'all!

(Thursday was way fun. Thanks, everybody!)

Telegraph Hill photos are up. It was just Quietgal, Mr. Quietgal, and me. But it was a great day, and it was definitely a good time hanging out with them and walking around some of the prettier parts of San Francisco.

Everyone who didn't go, you missed some homemade ice cream sandwiches.
