Bay Area Meetup? July 11, 2008 9:38 AM   Subscribe

I just moved to the bay area this past Saturday- anyone care to meet somewhere for food, drinks, etc?

I'm looking to meet some of the Mefites that populate the bay area and/or anyone who happens to be in town. Nothing hugely extravagant in mind. GuyZero, you are hereby entitled to a beer or two on my bankroll, since I never got the chance to meet you when I was out for the interview. I'm very new to the area, so any and all suggestions as to venue and time are more than welcome.

Sounds fun. Where in the bay area are you?

To bump some San Francisco stuff:
The Start Conference is Thursday, August 7.
armoured-ant's here August 17th - 23rd.
I don't think either of those has a time & place yet, since we do better with less warning.

I'm out in Sunnyvale right now, but I'm well aware that all the good stuff is to the east.

I'll be in the city on the 26th and 27th for a wedding! (I'm so excited to be back in the best city in the world.)

I think you mean north, potch. East of Sunnyvale is Milpitas.

Anyway, welcome to the Bay Area!

I think you mean north, potch. East of Sunnyvale is Milpitas.

Where the Great Mall of Milpitas is, host to Northern California's only Dave & Busters. There's a Fresh Choice thereabouts too. And a Fry's. And.. uh, Hot Dog On A Stick! I think there's mini-golf and roller rinks in them thar hills too.

That's can't lose all-American entertainment; the kind you can't find in parts West. The only thing better in the world is the once-a-year glory that is the State Fair.

OK, you win, fishfucker.

I love the State Fair. I am totally planning to go. I wish I lived a little closer, actually, you can get a season box at the racetrack for something like 650 bucks for 6 people, including admission to the fair. There's glory for you!

I will go to Dave & Busters, even though I live WAY UP IN THE WILD UNTAMED NORTH: San Francisco

That's only because you're one of them DDR freaks. Freak.

I will also go to Dave & Buster's for the DDR.

The last time I was at D&Bs I got an honest-to-god blood blister on my middle finger playing my friend at Street Fighter 2 and absolutely destroyed everyone on the trivia machine. It was really rather too legit. Hell, I'm drinking out of a D&B pint glass -- purchased with my millions -- purchased right this instant.

As for the State Fair, I say I'm going to go every year, and I only make it about every other. This year for sure, as my quest for the (perhaps mythical) double-dipped corndog remains unfulfilled. I wish Amtrak had a little shuttle going out there but I'll probably just bike it from the station.

When I worked in Sacramento my company 'sponsored' one of the races during the state fair (not steeplechase, unfortunately), and we got our picture taken with the winning horse. Pretty awesome. I haven't done a lot of horse racing this year because my track buddy is in New Jersey these days.

heh, yeah, I most certainly meant to the North. I'm down for what/whenever, even something little tomorrow night would be cool.

Tomorrow night is out for me, as I'll be going to the Crucible Fire Arts Festival, after spending the day in the City strolling the Mechanicrawl. Big Steam! Torpedo Submarine! Fresnel Lens! Should be cool.

That's pretty cool.
The closest I ever got to State Fair racehorses was seeing them exercised in the morning. I was competing in the horse show, and lived for four days in a nearly empty WWII era quonset hut on the grounds right next to the racetrack. The racehorses were also stabled near our horse, so I would get to see those amazing long-legged creatures tripping daintily back to their stalls after being rubbed down.

Ah Great Mall, Where would my lunchtimes be without Hot Dog on a Stick?

I like Dave n' Busters, but they're guilty of serving me the worst pint of Guinness I've had since I moved here! (But that's probably my fault for ordering Guinness in Dave n' Busters)

So, anyone want to try and do this Friday or Saturday evening? (the 18th or the 19th)
