Portland meetup on the 17th? October 1, 2008 12:21 PM   Subscribe

Portland, OR, meetup, say 17 October?

I'm going to be in Portland for the Animal Law Conference, and I've got Friday evening free. Anyone up for a meetup?

(Possible alternate times: Saturday evening, Sunday late lunch?)

I'll totally make it if I'm able.

I'm totally able if you and cortex make it.

Signs point to "maybe."

I pick Portland. No, wait—meetup!

Where are you staying, grobstein?

Animal law? Is that like a sitcom from the 70s where Benji becomes a private eye and along with his talking parrot sidekick, they solve crimes that plague kids of the neighborhood. Coming this fall to ABC's party Saturday: Animal Law starring Benji!

I think I can make it, and especially so if cortex reminds me to go the day before.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 2:37 PM on October 1, 2008

Oh yeah, mat, it was totally cortex's fault you forgot.

I might be able to make it, unless my grad program decides to throw a party that day. Can't really miss a "big" (note the ironic quotes) industry meet and greet.
posted by Caduceus at 4:30 PM on October 1, 2008

Woohoo! Another meetup I can try not to miss! This time, I will not schedule a hair appointment.

No one else has picked a day, but for me, Saturday is more functional.
posted by oreonax at 4:40 PM on October 1, 2008

Meetup post spotted! I am more likely to make it out on a Saturday.
posted by rokabiri at 4:59 PM on October 1, 2008

I'm up for either. Saturdays are cool, Fridays get kind of busy.

Portland or Meetup? I pick MEETUP. That said, I'll be driving through Portland Maine tomorrow and I will wave.

Grobstein, I'm down. Is the conference at LC or closer in? KELL'S! (Super crowded.)
posted by msamye at 6:58 PM on October 1, 2008

kell's? Too crowded, too noisy. Isn't the Low Brow Lounge a bit more Mefi?
posted by msalt at 9:15 PM on October 1, 2008

Yay, another meetup! I'll try to get my work done beforehand so I can join in this time.
posted by velvet winter at 9:27 PM on October 1, 2008

Wouldn't Pearl-y places be just as crowded on Friday nights?

Also: "Yay, another meetup! I'll try to get my work done beforehand so I can join in this time."

Mega dittos

either is good, but Saturday is better
posted by nickthetourist at 2:16 PM on October 2, 2008

I'm pretty pro-Saturday, anti-Friday-night myself too.
posted by cortex (staff) at 2:36 PM on October 2, 2008

The advantage of Saturday is the ability to start earlier without running into the after-work crowd, which increases the likelihood of annexing a large table.

That said, I miss the Rose and Raindrop.

Still.

KELL'S!

Oh god please no.

dude, don't you guys just have a contract with the green dragon at this point?
posted by mrzarquon at 5:31 PM on October 2, 2008

We've done Green Dragon twice in a row now; we really ought to let it breath and do something else. And I agree about not-Kells.
posted by cortex (staff) at 10:19 PM on October 2, 2008

I would strongly veto Kells as well.

I, um, don't know anywhere else beside the Green Dragon.

Or rather, I know other places, but they're all either owned by McMenamins or are tiny hole in the wall places without the room for a series-of-tubes-full of MeFites.

The new Deschutes Pub is really nice, it's where I spent my hangover from the last meetup I was at.

If someone has a couch I can sleep on, I can probably come down for the meetup. I have references from other mefites, and I am house trained.
posted by mrzarquon at 9:30 AM on October 3, 2008

Oh hey, yeah, we hit that place a while back and it was pretty nice. Lots of space, an upstairs loft that might be a pretty good meetup camp. On a Saturday afternoon/evening, it'd probably be pretty good, and it's right of Burnside so transit folks shouldn't have too bad of a time with it.
posted by cortex (staff) at 9:41 AM on October 3, 2008

Well played, mrzarquon. I've been meaning to check out the Deschutes Pub, particularly with the Jubel being rolled out (is it that late in the year already? *sigh*). Sounds like a doubleplusgood meetup to me.
posted by mumkin at 9:51 AM on October 3, 2008

Deschutes Pub sounds good to me. Are we trending toward Sat. evening? I am committed to making this one and not phoning it in. I'm a maverick like that.
posted by strangeleftydoublethink at 10:34 AM on October 3, 2008

Sounds great to me. I may need directions once I figure out where I'm staying.
posted by grobstein at 10:47 AM on October 3, 2008

Deschutes Pub is right on the streetcar line, too, which makes it even more likely that I'll be able to make it. +1 vote.
posted by velvet winter at 11:30 AM on October 3, 2008

A consensus emerges! Deschutes Pub on Saturday 18 October commencing at, say, 6PM, and proceeding into the wee hours, as is the Portland custom?
posted by dersins at 11:58 AM on October 3, 2008

Shit! There's streetcars there?!
posted by grobstein at 12:43 PM on October 3, 2008

We also have solar-powered unicorns.
posted by cortex (staff) at 3:03 PM on October 3, 2008

Also donuts and ponies.
posted by mrzarquon at 3:12 PM on October 3, 2008

And, uniquely, me.
posted by dersins at 3:25 PM on October 3, 2008

In a strange bit of situational irony (well, for me anyway), I'm actually playing at The Green Dragon that night. I know there'll be a visiting mefite at our house that weekend though, so it's an I-doubt-I'll-be-there-but-maybe-since-it's-all-dependent-upon-visitor situation. So, yeah, there you go.

And for anyone into it, the Night Owl Record Show is that evening as well. Since I probably won't have the scratch for that, I'll probably pass it up, but it should be cool. I believe that's at the Eagle Aire on Hawthorne and nowhere near the NW, in case you're wondering.

Why in the hell did I decide to comment?

> Why in the hell did I decide to comment?

I have no idea, I don't even live in portland, and I ended up suggesting the meetup location.
posted by mrzarquon at 6:17 PM on October 3, 2008

Hey, grobstein, you could crash at my house Saturday if you want. I live about 10 blocks away from the meetup, too. MeMail me.
posted by msalt at 9:20 PM on October 3, 2008

If anyone has a place where I can crash, I can make it down also (and manage to do yet another west coast meetup run: Seattle, Portland, San Francisco)
posted by mrzarquon at 11:53 AM on October 4, 2008

Alright, attempting again - no visitors from out of state so should be able to make it!
posted by ugf at 2:12 PM on October 4, 2008

I tried to be nice and add it to the meetups sidebar, but it won't let me. So, y'all go for it when you want to.
posted by sleepy pete at 8:54 PM on October 4, 2008

Huh, works for me. I guess it knows you won't be there. Meetup sidebarred.
posted by mumkin at 9:23 PM on October 4, 2008

Bastard sidebar.
posted by sleepy pete at 10:07 PM on October 4, 2008

A bounce for tomorrows meetup. I have found a place to crash, so I will be back in portland to terrorize the natives and disturb the masses, and drink your beer.

I have reminded The Haughey.

He'll forget. The Haughey always forgets.

I'm gonna call him like seven times tomorrow. It'll be like that scene in Swingers, except for he didn't get fired at the end.

Curse you, Zarquon, and your beer thieving ways.
posted by Caduceus at 6:12 PM on October 17, 2008

I remembered now thanks to cortex. I'll be there.

I'm going to be a little late. (In fact I nearly am already!) But (if anyone reads down here) I'm still coming.

Cortex, secretariat and I are here at the big round table
posted by mrzarquon at 5:55 PM on October 18, 2008

A good meetup, though the table was so darned big — and the venue so hoppin' — that I mostly only talked with oreonax and caduceus, with some peripheral zarquon and turbodoggage, to the exclusion of more distant mefites. I had no idea the Deschutes pub would be such a hot destination. Maybe next time somewhere a bit less Pearly, eh?
posted by mumkin at 10:17 PM on October 18, 2008

Thanks for the cakewalk-like chair shuffling, Cortex. Very gracious of youse.
posted by msalt at 10:19 PM on October 18, 2008

This was my first meetup - it was fun! I'll definitely try to make it to the next one. I only got to talk with a couple of folks this time around before I had to return home and hit the books once again.

It was especially refreshing to socialize in a group where my academic-geek talk was not only acceptable, but warmly welcomed. Thanks, MeFites!
posted by velvet winter at 10:44 PM on October 18, 2008

It was good times, indeed. I do agree, though, we should try to find somewhere more conducive to being able to hear each other next time.
posted by Caduceus at 12:20 AM on October 19, 2008

That was fun (no photos?!) but yeah kind of loud and crowded in the middle. I guess that rose and raindrop upper floor was a really perfect setup because it was quiet and deserted so you could move around easily and hear people. Too bad it's gone.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 7:51 AM on October 19, 2008

Yeah, good time indeed; loud indeed; round table is rooooound; etc. We need to find some place that is both awesome and also just not very popular. Make our meetup destination a yearly changing target as one perfect location after another goes out of business because it doesn't get enough distracting other business.

I just want to acknowledge in writing here that the nice loft that I mentioned this joint having is actually the property of the Bridgeport brewpub, a mile or so farther west. Oops.

(no photos?!)

Pool and scotch pre-empt uploading. I'll get there.
posted by cortex (staff) at 8:05 AM on October 19, 2008

Photos have been uploaded. I too was distracted by pool and scotch.

Also, waffles.
posted by mrzarquon at 10:26 AM on October 19, 2008

Mine are up now too. They would have been up sooner if a certain house guest hadn't been hogging the upload pipe.
posted by cortex (staff) at 10:27 AM on October 19, 2008

I like the "no hat" caption.

Going to yoink that for personal use, if you don't mind, cortex.
posted by Caduceus at 10:38 AM on October 19, 2008

Yoink away!
posted by cortex (staff) at 10:48 AM on October 19, 2008

It was good to meet people, albeit briefly, and I'm sorry I had to leave so early; I'd had a long day of hiking all around Portland and was facing a drive back to Olympia. (And I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one having trouble hearing conversations ... I tend to just blame it on advancing age & too damn many rock concerts in my misspent youth.)
posted by Kat Allison at 12:36 PM on October 19, 2008

'twas much fun, everyone! and yes, perhaps a bit less pearl-y next round...
posted by oreonax at 2:32 PM on October 19, 2008

I couldn't hear a word anyone said, so I nodded a lot. Actually, I did have some great conversations, but meeting in a crowded bar is like a thread that everyone knows is going to be deleted. Noisy.
