Yarr, music and meet-up! October 1, 2009 12:09 PM   Subscribe

Treasure Island music fest meet-up? It's on Treasure Island, between San Francisco and Oakland, October 17th and 18th.

I don't yet have my tickets, but I'm planning on going to both days. I went last year, and it was a blast. The line-up was all indie dance stuff, like it is this year (wikipedia for easy links). If they keep to the one act at a time set-up, you can actually hear all the music, no matter where you are (unlike Coachella, which has become an overamplified mass of sunburnt people).

Yes, you'll need to pay to get in, but the prices aren't too bad for a well managed festival with big name indie acts, and there's no re-entry once you leave for the day. It's not the best "come one and all" meet-up, but the crowds and volume allowed for people to meander and chat with ease, which I dig.

Conversely, there could be before or after festival meet-ups, for those who aren't going to the festival but want to meet up. Not being an SF native, I'll leave the suggestions and propositions up to others, if this is decided.

(Also, I'll be at the mercy of others to drive, as I'm hitching a ride to + from).

And now I realize a new meet-up less than a month since the previous one isn't too timely. But hey, if you're at the festival, let's hang out!

I'm totally in. I have a 2-day pass, so either day is promising.

I've been pining to go to the TIMF, but alas, I have no money.

Thanks for rubbing salt in the wound.

Just kidding, I hope you have a blast.

Fuck yeah!

I'm going on Sunday!

I'm there on Sunday, though I'll be with a group of friends. But I'm happy to wander by and say hello to SF Mefites (I'm actually flying down from Vancouver for this; I have a very persuasive friend in Seattle who wanted to go).

jokeefe - persuasive indeed. Why not head to Sasquatch instead? Less dancey, more indie rock, but a bigger festival and closer to Seattle.

lekvar - no one would stop a frogman. This is the perfect time to test out your aquatic stealth maneuvers. (And you do live in the general area of a plethora of great music, if you can get to The City for the shows.)

I'll probably go on Sunday as well.

Sunday looks good for me too.

Ah, but, filthy light thief, do I have friends with a comfy guest room at Sasquatch? I don't think so. Do I have to drive 10 hours to Treasure Island, as opposed to flying for 2? Why no! Is camping involved? Not a bit of it. All these things lead me to think that my music festival choices are rational, nay, the only possible course of action.

Decemberists, Beirut and Grizzly Bear and Yo La Tengo all in one evening? Brilliant.

For those without funds to go, you can sign up for MyBART (disclaimer: I work for BART but don't manage this program). They are giving away pairs of tickets and the odds of winning are fairly good for a contest like this.

I really want to go. However, the festival faq says I can't bring my fancy DSLR and its array of wonderful lenses. Anyone know how to get a press pass? I'm happy to give some lucky publication a metric ton of solid gold photography, just for getting me a pass.

mullingitover: try a direct line of contact and offer your services to the festival, or ask if there are any outlets in want of professional photos via the press email address: pr@treasureislandfestival.com

You could try contacting local (to you or up in SF) indie media papers / mags, and see if they'd like some photos for an article (I'd wax poetic, if you're at a loss for words =) You could also look into indie music websites and inquire there.

Or, you could contact bands and see if they have any personal photographers for the show. I'm sure some of the smaller groups would like a photographer to archive their moments on stage (though none of the bands are that small, some might be easier to approach than others). Good luck!

These are all great ideas, thanks flf!

My tickets are purchased, my rides are being arranged, and I am stoked.

mullingitover - best of luck getting the press pass! With your pics, you should be able to find someone who would get you access.

I realize we could do sporadic meetings, or one per day, but it sounds like Sunday is The Day more people are there. Thoughts?

I made this official-ish by making a Meet-up on the sidebar: Sunday is the day, though I'll be skipping around on Saturday.

I was going to write Treasure Island/SF, CA for the location, but that was too long. In retrospect, I should have shortened it somehow and made it fit, because I don't want to get someone's hopes up for a SF meet-up, only to find it's a festival meet-up.

Oh, man, I was hoping this was an SF meetup, but I find it's actually a festival meet-up!

lore, I realized that my titling of this meet-up could be misleading after submitting it to the side-bar.

So ... do we plan on a meeting location? I haven't found the map for this year's events. Or do we ask people behind our hands "hey, are you from the internet?"

Oh, we could also just state what we'll be wearing? I will be wearing this shirt on Sunday, and I'll be wearing this hat both days, though it may just look like I have a fuzzy boa around my neck if it's too warm to wear the hood up.

If you're nerdy like that, there's an iPhone app with the map and such.

I'll keep an eye out-- I'm wearing a black skirt and top and carrying a purple bag, with a group of about 8 people.

potch found me yesterday (writing that, I feel like some weird scavenger hunt item =) I failed to take a picture of/with him and his friends, but we did indeed see each-other.

You might see me carrying a large black plastic trash bag, picking up plastic bottles and those weird corn-based cups. This is not because I'm a super hippie, neurotic about litter, or paying off some moral debt to the world. It's because I want a free pass to the fest for next year. Recycling for swag is a grand idea, and an easy way to get sun screen, should you have forgotten to bring any (like I did).

I'll be bouncing around from stage to stage for the whole day, leaving after the start of the Flaming Lips set (not a huge fan, and it's 4 hours to home, after that 30 minute wait in line for a bus, with work tomorrow).

So .. I failed to take pictures of/with jokeefe and potch. I'm sorry. And if you were looking for the "Now Panic and Freak Out" shirt, it got rather cold, so I ended up in a hoodie by the afternoon.
posted by filthy light thief at 12:46 PM on October 19, 2009

It was cold! I bought a pair of leggings to wear with my skirt and was glad that I did.

My friends got engaged at the festival-- he proposed during Beirut! Afterwards we managed to pick up a bottle of champagne just before midnight to celebrate. Fantastic day. :)
