Kansas City Meetup, Eh? November 4, 2009 6:51 AM   Subscribe

Alright KC Mefites, I know you're out there. A Kansas City Meetup is way overdue. Let's do it.

I don't have definite where or a what, but I do have a (potential, totally flexible) when: Saturday. Any Saturday works for me. Is anyone interested?

Lawrence folks are invited too, of course, since you've graciously included KCitians into your fold in the past.

Also, is anyone going to the Leonard Cohen concert on Monday?

Maryville (upstate) here. May be interested on a Saturday if I can get my husband interested. Not going to Leonard Cohen, tho.

Are you planning to do it in KCMO or Johnson County?
posted by reenum at 9:11 AM on November 4, 2009

I would try to make it.

I'm down with whatever everyone agrees to. I'm a fan of the WestPort or Waldo areas myself, but I've got friends in low places JoCo too.

I'll be there.
posted by hellojed at 9:43 AM on November 4, 2009

I'll be there either way. I just wanted to see where we were going to do it.

Let's see what everyone is down for. My vote is JoCo, just because I live there.

I nominate Nov 14th in Waldo. Say Waldo Pizza or 75th Street Brewery?
posted by piedmont at 1:42 PM on November 4, 2009

Dude, can we do it on a Fri. night? I'm busy the next few Saturdays.
posted by reenum at 2:56 PM on November 4, 2009

Blargh I was just there!

McCoys down in Westport seems ups MeFi's ally and meets their demands (Non franchise eatery, good food, big tables, and brew their own beer/root beer)

and, if we do that, we can go down to Murrey's ice cream down the street for dessert!

I work on Friday nights :( Would anyone be opposed to a weekday evening or Sunday evening? Or we could push the meetup back a few weeks for you, reenum. Whaddya say?

I vote for 75th street brewery!
posted by chara at 7:27 AM on November 5, 2009

I'm available most weekends (Except this one and the 20th), but no weeknights.
I'm not opposed to McCoy's, since it is closer to me. But 75th seems like it might be more central to include those that live in JoCo.
posted by piedmont at 8:25 AM on November 5, 2009

If you pick a weekend evening, I'll come up from Manhattan and wrap in a little shopping/family visiting/etc.
posted by donnagirl at 9:08 AM on November 5, 2009

75th St. Brewery would be awesome for me. As for pushing it back, I wouldn't want you to delay only on my account. I can always make it to the next one. It just would be nice to go to a meetup, since I keep missing the ones in Lawrence.

This weekend is bad for me, but I don't want to be the one who changes plans and doesn't show up ... so I'm just kind of throwing it out there. What about Kennedy's right next to 75th St., they recently renovated and sell non 75th St. beer. Westport, Waldo doesn't matter to me. (If I'm the lowest user number it does make me the leader, fyi ... on preview: damn you donnagirl!)
posted by geoff. at 1:59 PM on November 5, 2009

Yeah, geoff., I think there's some user number/distance from event formula in play which clearly anoints you the leader over me. I'll wield my amazing 4-digit powers in other ways at the meetup proper.

This weekend is no good for me, but any other non-Thanksgiving weekend in the next few weeks is probably do-able.

I'm down for 75th's, or anywhere really. Great think about the KC area, everything is a 20 minute drive away.

Anytime is a good time for me.

Okay, what about Saturday, December 5th @ 75th Street Brewery? That should give everyone time to plan ahead and what not. And there are plenty of other places in that vicinity, so if we get tired of one, we'll just go to another. Hell, we could just make it a pub crawl!

Alright! I'm so stoked, folks! I'm bringing cupcakes!

Huzzah for cupcakes!

Hey, just a St. Louis person sticking his head in to be quasi-disruptive. At the St. Louis meetup a week or so ago I suggested that one of us should poke our head in here and say something like, "Yo! Missouri wide meetup in Columbia some time in 2010?"

So yo! Missouri wide meetup in Columbia some time in 2010?

(Talk among yourselves and someone send me a Mefimail.)

posted by geoff. at 1:52 PM on December 2, 2009

7pm? Does that work for everyone?
posted by chara at 7:13 AM on December 3, 2009

Works for me. Also, how do I identify you guys? Will someone have a MeFi shirt or something distinctive on?
posted by reenum at 11:53 AM on December 3, 2009

This is a good question. It could be crowded on a Friday night. Is someone trying to get a table? If we get a table it'll be easier.
posted by geoff. at 7:16 PM on December 3, 2009

7 sounds great. Saturdays haven't been too bad there, but it could be kinda full.
Someone want to grab a table under Matt Haughey or Jessamyn West?
posted by piedmont at 9:11 PM on December 3, 2009

So... we still doing this thing?
posted by piedmont at 12:47 PM on December 5, 2009

Yeah! How about whoever gets there first, save a table under the name Matt Haughey. I like that idea. Solid.

Nothing to do with aliasing, there's just something about the lines and their curvature that just seems to fit. The NYT especially seems so consistent in their look and feel, I assumed there was some sort of toolkit or methodology to it. Whenever I start to introduce curves into my work it just looks wrong. Perhaps I just need practice in Illustrator. I can do grids and square things really well, but once curvature gets introduce it gets ugly fast.

Whoa wrong tab for that.

That was awesome! I had a great time, the cupcakes were amazing, and so was the 90's hip-hop that the DJ was playing near 11pm. We'll have to do this again sometime.
posted by hellojed at 10:10 PM on December 5, 2009

Well fuck, I tried to stop by before my dinner reservations but there was absolutely no room to park. I almost took a handicap space to run in and say hi, but the people outside smoking gave me the stink eye. Ah, I'll give it a shot next time. Let's try again in warm weather.
posted by geoff. at 12:00 PM on December 6, 2009

I had a fantastic night, guys! Thank you. I only took a few pictures, and they're not great (though I am vastly amused by them), but I thought I'd share them anyway. Let me know if you're not comfortable with them floating around the Internet.

Sorry you couldn't make it, Geoff. Next time...
posted by bibliophibianj at 6:33 PM on December 6, 2009

You are all just splendid! I had a fantastic time! Let's do it again some time, for sure.

Shame on me for not making it. I had an emergency right before the meetup, and was unavoidably detained. I will be at the next one, though.
posted by reenum at 1:15 PM on December 7, 2009

Really nice to meet all you guys! Chara, next time I'll bring some cake too in my matching cake carrier! Sadly I put my to-go-cupcake on the coffee table when we got home and it was licked clean before I knew it. Meetup success, yay!
