Sorry Dallas, you can always make the drive. November 19, 2009 7:34 PM   Subscribe

Sorry Dallas, Austin school's out meet-up?

Spikeleemajors had mentioned in the last thread about having another meet-up after finals, and i really think that would be a good idea, as I really enjoy the meet-ups

After finals puts us at the weekend before christmas, or we could do the 6th or the 13th. The 13th is in the middle of finals though.

My suggestion is the Pour House, as previously mentioned, also in the last thread.

Or we could do dog and duck again, that place was really cool. Food was amazing, and when i spend that much on a sandwich i am glad when the flavor gives me my money's worth.

Tell me what you guys think.

By the way, i was coming here to do this before I saw the Dallas post. Really not trying to be a jerk, coincidence i decided to take advantage of.

No, no fight. Just beer and food.

I would maybe come to this, but as usual, I'm not going to commit. Because I am forgetful and lazy.

I think we should all drive to Dallas and do a meetup there, but not invite any of the Dallas folks.

I have no fucking clue why I'm all about the Dallas hate today. Really, I gots nothing but love for Dallas. Hugs.

I'd like another meetup. I'm easy, and you people are starting to grow on me.

I'm kinda new here, but what the hey, I'd love to meet some mefi people.

Anything north of Town Lake and south of 183 is easy for me, and I think I can do any of the weekends mentioned.

i might be able to do this.

I vote for the 6th. And also vote for not Pour House, unless they have improved. When I went there last, they had a shameful beer selection, and lousy food.
posted by kaseijin at 6:29 AM on November 20, 2009

Wait no, not the 6th. Band is playing a show that night. Out of town the following....

Consarnit, MeFi, will you ever have a meetup that I can make??

so if the pour house sucks, want to do dog and duck again? or are there other pub type places?
posted by djduckie at 4:18 PM on November 20, 2009

Draught House is awesome (and they make their own beer!), but their food sucks.

Crown and Anchor is pretty good as far as beer and food goes.

Shuck Shack has a few bottled beers, a full bar, all sorts of seafood, and bocce/washers/horse shoes.

If anyone wants to do something different, there's free hockey (Busch league) at the rink on 35 and Howard-ish. Tuesdays and Thursdays. They have pitchers of Guiness, Bud, Miller, etc, and frozen pizza. It's free, and usually me and my friend are the only ones in the entire rink, which gets us a lot of stares (dude, why are those two guys always here if they're never playing hockey?) but we don't care. We've been riding our bicycles up there for shits and giggles. Oh, because it's cheap, the rinks aren't heated, so dress warm if we decide on this option. We always pick a team and cheer like fucktards for them. We'll cheer for their opponent the following week.

OK bumped off the frong page. I am putting us on the side for 12/6 and we can discuss the place.

I really think we should do the hockey thing too. If no one else is down, i am sure i could just join you guys.

I have no idea what a frong page is, i meant front page.
posted by djduckie at 12:34 PM on November 23, 2009

Cheering is the only thing I like about sports.

I should be in for food/beer on the 6th.

Damn, I totally forgot about the Thanksmas celebration my wife's family does between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and it's on the weekend of the 6th this year. I'm out.

If anyone wants to join me for the weird hockey experience some night, let me know.

I'd like to make this, but the 6th does not work for me unless it's early in the day (and even then, I need to double-check).

I'm sort of on a Mefi-vacation for busyness reasons but I'm glad I checked in. I'll try to make it one more time. The 6th is fine for me as far as I can tell.

ok we got the date we need time and place.

I'm in. The Dog & Duck (or just about any other place that's been mentioned) works for me.
posted by donajo at 11:56 AM on November 29, 2009

I'm interested. I'd also be up for a Part II mini-meet up as it appears that 27% of the respondents so far have conflicts on the 6th. Can there ever be too much MetaFilter + beer? I'd offer a road-trip meetup between Dallas & Austin... except I have no illusions about the attractiveness of Waco. (The abandoned buildings downtown are kind of cool, though.) The suburb next to mine will be able to sell alcohol in the future. Golly! That kind of initiative deserves encouragement.

The 6th seems alright, but at that point in time I may or may not be swamped with school work (the last day of class for UT is this friday, the 4th, and I have an exam and a largeish final project due in the following weeks). I'll try to make it, but no promises.

Have we figured out where it will be yet? I'll put in a vote for Crown and Anchor, because I like it and because it's easy for me to get to (and right across the street from my office, so if I am working I'll have an excuse to stop). Also, Dog and Duck is fine if that's the general consensus.
posted by malthas at 2:40 PM on December 1, 2009

how crowded is the crown and anchor at 3 on sundays? If it's good i am fine with that, especially if it means Malthas can go, the more people at the meet-up usually the better they are.

That said, as far as "mini" or "bonus" or extra meet-ups go, barring spieleemajors... ability to do so, i was wondering if anyone wanted to do the hockey thing on 12/10 (next thursday). He really sold it well.

I'll try to make it too, if we ever pick a place.
posted by restless_nomad at 9:43 AM on December 2, 2009

I think we're down. I guess Dog and Duck is OK. I feel like there's got to be somewhere better.

Crown and Anchor is fine, but parking can be difficult and will there be enough room for all inside? It's going to be cold.
posted by fiercecupcake at 5:40 PM on December 2, 2009

Crown and Anchor probably won't be too bad, and I've never had a problem with parking. You can park on the street in front of and behind the joint, and there's a parking lot. Y'all should bring darts.

C&A is within bike range for me, so I approve. If it turns out to be a bust for some reason, Trudy's is just down the road a bit, as well as other places.
posted by adamrice at 6:10 AM on December 3, 2009

alright crown and anchor at 3.

If the street conditions really suck or something we might have to reschedule. I guess just everyone keep checking here. I think it's supposed to warm up though.

Also looks like the snow storm was about 5 minutes (i got the interesting juxtaposition of seeing snow flurries outside of DKR memorial stadium while i waited for the bus on the only day this semester (at this particular time of day) that there wasn't a bus there waiting for me. Thanks bus. Thus! ) so there should be no transportation problems. foolish me to believe that it would be a solid 4 inches of sticking snow. I was acting like my younger self on bad days in MI waiting for the snow day. Wah wah.

I was at Crown and Anchor at noon today and got to watch the snow "storm". I rode my motorcycle in a blizzard! I'm hardcore! Yeah!

Oh, they don't have fish and chips there. Boo. Their menu is actually pretty sparse. Their veggie burgers are good, and the nachos are ok. No $11 reuben.

Google Maps and ratings of Crown and Anchor.

Hope to make it, if even for just a short hello, supposed to hang with a friend on Sunday, maybe we'll come together...

so rather than being the "early dorks" for the fifth time in a row, I am planning to be fashionably late. Take that...bitches.

My work is turning out to be going not as quickly as I hoped, so I'm out. Sorry about that, hope to make the next one.

ha ha i have a trusty sidekick. Cool.

yeah, but where the hell was everyone? I was trying desperately to entertain Adam Rice and failing miserably.

Well damn, sorry this one was a bust.

Maybe we can aim for a post-holiday white elephant again? That was loads of fun last year. I still love the frog teapot. And with the tantalizing offer of junk people from the internet don't want, who could resist?
posted by fontophilic at 10:17 PM on December 6, 2009

That frog teapot was indeed off the chain. So much so that I remember what you got but not what I got.
posted by bluishorange at 9:46 AM on December 7, 2009

I recently received perfect fodder for a white elephant gift exchange, so I am emphatically in favor of another. Too bad last year's venue is no more.
posted by adamrice at 12:51 PM on December 7, 2009

I'm not sure that I'll ever be able to top that frog teapot, but I'm game for another gift exchange!
posted by freshwater_pr0n at 7:47 AM on December 8, 2009

Don't consider topping the frog teapot. It's not possible.
